albert 14th May 2017 | | Live MusicThe Soup Dragons @ ULU | MBV had a few gigs listed with The Soup Dragons around this time, some kind of student union bars tour. They also seem to pop up regularly all over the small venues around London late 1986 & 1987, mostly as a support act, I will try to add a few details.
EDIT:
actually, no I won't add the other N.U.S. gigs after seeing ads blatantly stipulating "N.U.S. members and guests only" - bloody students.

albert 14th May 2017 | | Live MusicOzric Tentacles @ Brabant Road Club | Found this advert & listing in Sounds and it certainly is an early Club Dog event. I have to say this looks suspiciously like it could have been a gig in somebodies house, or some non-licenced building. I looked up the address on google maps and it shows a backroad but also with extensive redevelopment so I don't know, however there is an old boarded up workshop and the back area for The Jolly Anglers pub.
EDIT:
I found another listing for Brabant Road, this time stating "T&U Community Centre" instead of "2A" but it was for a boring event so I'm not adding it.

albert 13th May 2017 | | 12" SingleThe Smiths - Shoplifters Of The World Unite | Some mispressed early copies come with "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby" as the A-side, as reported in NME 7 Feb 1987. The error occurred because YJHEIYB was the originally planned A-side and a stamper was made ...and subsequently got muddled with the correct ones.
|
albert 13th May 2017 | | Live MusicBliss @ The Bull and Gate | I only added this entry after the listing caught my eye and I liked the band names; very evocative of the beginnings of twee/C86.

albert 13th May 2017 | | Live MusicSci-Fi Sex Stars @ Camden Palace | This advert appeared in Sounds 19 July 1986, but also it was reported (in the following week's press) that Tony James held a press conference 15 July 1986 to announce that Sigue Sigue Sputnik were cancelling most of their upcoming tour, ....but would be playing some 'secret gigs' later on.
|
albert 12th May 2017 | | Live MusicHalf Man Half Biscuit @ The Bull and Gate | Looking through old music papers I find the shifting live music scene in London quite interesting as venues change their music policies or even stop putting on live music altogether. Prior to this date you would be hard pushed to see a triple billing of indie bands at the venue, in fact you would probably more likely to have seen the kind of 'never signed' relic acts plodding on and passing round the hat for beer money.
Sadly I saw last week that The Bull & Gate has finally reopened as a terrible snobbish/up market kind of bar/coffee place, obviously no bands, but I suppose the location cannot compete against the now trendy Shoreditch/Old Street area.

albert 12th May 2017 | | CD AlbumStereolab - Emperor Tomato Ketchup | Stereolab tracks get deleted off YouTube so I will only add 2 links.
[YouTube Video]
oh dear, I am finding most are blocked, so here they are on Jools Holland's show instead

albert 12th May 2017 | | CD AlbumStereolab - The Groop Played "Space Age Batchelor Pad Music" | Emperor Tomato Ketchup is probably the easiest of their LPs to start on and was produced about the mid-point of their career (they borrowed the title from a wacko Japanese movie). There have been many compilation LPs of their extremely limited vinyl singles, and these would give anyone a good idea of the scope of their sound - which started like an indie-krautrock and finished somewhere near jazzy-easy-listening.
Unfortunately tracking down the CDs/LPs is getting difficult as they seem to have been deleted.
Laetitia Sadier is back in France and has about 5 LPs which sound like Les Swingle Singers, from what I've heard. Tim Gane is in a band called Cavern Of Anti-Matter, which sound not too dis-similar to the early Stereolab.

albert 11th May 2017 | | MagazineNME | I'm really not sure that is Sid Vicious on the cover or from the biopic film.
NME's Big Four EP details on 45Cat, features Tom Waits, The Jesus And Mary Chain, Hüsker Dü, Trouble Funk.

|
albert 11th May 2017 | | Live MusicPhil Collins @ Royal Albert Hall | Added an advert from the NME April 1985. Looks like tour merchandise, so you don't miss out, a full set would cost you around £110, knock yourself out!
|
albert 11th May 2017 | | Live MusicThe Pretty Things @ Sir George Robey | Sad to see that The Sir George Robey has now been completely demolished after nearly two decades standing as a building shell.
|
albert 11th May 2017 | | Cinema13 Ghosts (Thirteen Ghosts) (1960) | Added a pic for the Ghost Viewer I made, though I think the source image was from one included in a video/dvd release of the film.
The gimmick for The Tingler was to wire up some chairs for an electric shock or vibration, William Castle was the king of the gimmicks.
|
albert 1st May 2017 | | Cinema13 Ghosts (Thirteen Ghosts) (1960) | I had to make my own ghost viewer as my DVD didn't come with one. It was reasonably easy to do after I got hold of red and blue gels and plain card. I just needed to google an image of a ghost viewer, resize the image and print it out twice on card, cut out both images using a knife and sandwich the gels in the correct places held together with glue.
Next project a tingler, or maybe not.
|
albert 18th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicBaby Bird @ The Astoria | The ticket has the date 18th May 1996 crossed out and new rubber-stamped date 24 Apr 1996, so the gig was brought forward by a few weeks and may explain the shift in line up (Echobelly and The Mystics added).
I think Echobelly was just Sonya & Debbie, Drugstore maybe just Isobel & Daron, most sets were short and basic, No Way Sis was full band and on a while.
|
albert 17th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicH2SO4 @ The Water Rats | H2SO4 had one of the better tracks on those Band Register CDs that were sent out as promo compilations.
|
albert 17th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicPH Family @ Dingwalls | Club Mullet from Glasgow.
|
albert 17th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicGrandaddy @ Shepherd's Bush Empire | My ticket has the date 31st October 2000 crossed out and the new date 30 Nov 2000 rubber-stamped on.
I missed Elbow due to an annoying 50min tube standstill at Edgware Road.
|
albert 17th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicGorky's Zygotic Mynci @ The Scala | Looks like Gorky's had a curse for changed dates, the original ticket on this gig states 17 November 1999 but I know it got changed to 23 November as that's what I've written on the back and I have a press cutting advertising the new date with "original tickets still valid".
|
albert 17th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicSix By Seven @ The Scala | Parva became The Kaiser Chiefs a little while later.
|
albert 17th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicGorky's Zygotic Mynci @ Union Chapel | Original date was 26 May 2000.
|
albert 17th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicGuided By Voices @ Astoria 2 | Yes date certainly was changed, looking at my original ticket & cuttings now. Original date 20/10/99 at the bigger Astoria, new date at the LA2, new advert cuttings state that "original tickets remain valid".
Of my cuttings there is gossip that states the singer (Robert) brings a crate of beer and a bucket on stage and drinks all the bottles during the gig, you can guess why he, erm, needed the bucket as the band did something like a 2 hour show.
|
albert 17th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicThe Gossip @ The Spitz | Can hardly read the flyer but it looks like The Gossip did a 10 date UK tour. The support bands are listed on the flyer, and there was a bunch of them, the official Spitz material lists the A-Lines as support though I'm pretty sure they did not play despite band members milling around the [very butch] audience.
|
albert 17th Apr 2017 | | Live MusicPeter Green And The Splinter Group @ The Borderline | Some Oasis boys were rumoured to be lurking around at the back of the room.
