CorporalClegg 21st Jun 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumMonty Python - Another Monty Python Record | Although Dietriech Walther appears to be a fictional name, "soloist" Justus Pankau was a German cinematographer who worked on the German version of Monty Python "Fliegender Zirkus."

CorporalClegg 5th Mar 2024 | | CD AlbumThe Move - Something Else From The Move | An absolute necessity for any Move fan, casual or hardcore; the energy and power in these performances feels like (if you'll pardon the joke) a brontosaurus storming right over you and is probably one of the greatest live documents I've ever heard. The remaster is fabulous: some of the original technical flaws marring the tapes (electrical hums, vocal mic volumes) are still audible but in no way detract from the recordings and the sound is incredibly sharp and clear. An incredible live document and probably one of the best "lost" finds to get reissued since Roy Wood's Main Street album finally saw the light of day. Cannot recommend this one enough!
(My ONLY gripe is the liner notes seem to be inconsistent on recording dates, with the original "Somethin' Else" track cited as being recorded at the February 27th show while citing the EP version as being recorded at the May 5th show. It sounds like the same performance with a new vocal overdub to me, and I'd imagine was done at the first show.)

CorporalClegg 6th Feb 2024 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Let's Copp A Groove! Lost UK Soul | Killer compilation! Cannot recommend this one enough. Plenty of soul, catchy melodies and excellent productions and all assembled into a fabulous set.

CorporalClegg 31st Oct 2023 | | CD AlbumWizzard - Singles A's And B's | Briefly had this CD in college–a must to avoid! The sound mastering is way too loud, blowing everything out well into distorted territory; Repertoire always seems to have problems with that if they're not outright ripping straight from vinyl. A pity since this is the only CD attempting to compile all the Wizzard singles A's & B's all together instead of scattered across albums as bonus tracks (no doubt due to the hop from Harvest to Warner Brothers and Jet Records).

CorporalClegg 23rd Sep 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumBlack Oak Arkansas - The Devil's Jukebox | Well, here's a surreal first–my first professional engineering credit! Rather chuffed to have had something I worked on pressed up to wax, and good practice to hear how it sounds as a finished physical mix.

CorporalClegg 7th Aug 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Move - Message From The Country | Phil Copestake was the tour manager for the Move/ELO. How he wound up credited for "No Time," I have absolutely no clue.

CorporalClegg 17th Dec 2022 | | 78 RPMTiny Tim - There'll Always Be An England / Bless 'em All | [YouTube Video]
Strangely, for whatever reason "Sue" has a unique edit added to the ending where the pitch is tape sped up the scales. Maybe to imitate a victrola's motor over cranking?

CorporalClegg 28th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumKasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus - Kasenetz-Katz Singing Orchestral Circus | Some notes/observations about the groups and photos:
--The St. Louis Invisible Marching Band is cheekily shown as a blank white square in the group photos, but the stamps show the pictures of the group listed as the Teri Nelson Group as being the in St. Louis. (Teri Nelson signed as a solo singer, but revoked her contract after being marketed as part of a group.) To me it looks like they're wearing wigs/makeup to change their appearance but I wouldn't swear to it, but I don't recognize who they are.
--J.C.W. Ratfinks was a name concocted for singles, and I have no clue who the people in the line up actually are as I can't place any of their faces, though they look familiar. EDIT: Amending this, an August 3 1968 Billboard article could point to "Wayne" being Wayne Brewster, announced as a signed writer who appears to have written a few singles for Roulette.
--Jim, Steve and Paul in the Musical Marching Zoo could possibly be Jim Calvert, Steve Feldman and Paul Naumann.
--Appears cover designer Acy Lehman got to be in the stamps listed as "D. ZIN. R."
The lineups and pictures for the 1910 Fruitgum Co, Ohio Express, Lt. Garcia's Magic Music Box and the Music Explosion all appear to be correct and the original group lineups.

CorporalClegg 26th Jan 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Move - Looking On | Modern sources cite "Turkish Tram Conductor Blues" as actually being a Wood song donated to Bevan for royalties. Either way it's a corker.

CorporalClegg 12th Jan 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Buoys - The Buoys | Album label and lyric sheet omits Danny Jordan's co-writing credit for "Give Up Your Guns," although the flap retains it.

CorporalClegg 8th Jan 2022 | | CD AlbumThe Troggs - The Singles As & Bs | ReviewAs usual with Repertoire releases the quality's a little hit or miss here, tape hiss/mix issues, some tracks mastered too loud or distorted, or dubbed from vinyl ("Anyway That You Want Me" seems to suffer most from this, and was that one really that difficult to access the original tapes for?) but overall isn't too obtrusive and is a comprehensive collection of their singles. Nice batch of rarities and mid/later 70's stuff on here, plus including their rare solo singles, which does make this well worth tracking down for any Troggs fans, I just wish the audio quality were a little better. Still, I'd recommend it.

CorporalClegg 28th Oct 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Lemon Pipers - Jungle Marmalade | The band penned "Mirrors" apparently got bumped in favor of "Lonely Atmosphere." All copies have Mirrors on the back and Atmosphere on the labels, but as far as I know the Canadian pressings are the only ones to actually play Mirrors.

CorporalClegg 21st Oct 2021 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Land Of Sensations & Delights: The Psych Pop Sounds Of White Whale Records, 1965-1970 | Track 24 is actually a cover of George Tobin & Johnny Cymbal's "Sell Your Soul," presumably intended for a White Whale b-side.

CorporalClegg 11th Mar 2021 | | Vinyl Album1910 Fruitgum Co. - Indian Giver | Notice the front cover lists a track "Mary Wanna Go 'Round With Me", which did not appear on this album and only turned up on their final (German and French only) LP.

CorporalClegg 17th Jan 2021 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Super K Kollection, Vol. 2 | Some notes:
-"Ah La" originally came out under the Fighter Squadron name.
-"Death of You" is actually Lt. Garcia's Magic Music Box's "Children In The Playground" with new lyrics and a new recording. According to Harry Boyle in an older interview, "Gung," "Sweetness" and "Wasted" were all by them too.
-"Gung" apparently squeaked out on the Buddah distributed Team label as by The Legends (simply called "Gung Gung Gung").
-"Rain," "Sweetness," "Feelin' It" and a different recording of "Bingo" all came out on the French/German only final LP of the 1910 Fruitgum Company.
|
CorporalClegg 17th Jan 2021 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Super K Kollection, Vol. 1 | Some notes:
-"Sister Honky Tonk" is actually "Rock 'n' Roll Sister" by Canyon; it was the b-side to "Overloaded," mistakenly credited to Octopus here. ("Sister Honky Tonk" was a song off K-K's Furr album on Magna Glide.)
-"Take A Big Hit On The Jug" was off the Spencer Barefoot Magna Glide LP though appears to have been a leftover track not by him.
-"Mama Lu" came out under the Kasenetz-Katz Super Cirkus name originally.
Additionally, Harry Boyle of Lt. Garcia's claimed in an interview (now on a defunct site) that "Fever" and "House" were done by them. "Elevator Man" also sounds 80/90s recording rather than 60s.

CorporalClegg 7th Oct 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumZager And Evans - The Early Writings Of Zager And Evans (And Others) | Album containing singles of Zager & Evans from Nebraska under the names The Eccentrics and Denny Lamarr & The Echoes. With only enough material for one side, the b-side is padded out with the first half of the J.K. & Co's "Suddenly One Summer" album.
|
CorporalClegg 7th Oct 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumTony And Derek Hardman - Tiger Moth | According to a reviewer on Amazon.uk, the album was a collection of demo recordings sent to the record company to review only to come back pressed up. It definitely sounds like a demo album with only the duo on guitar and bass and vocals, though there's some touches to it that could've been interesting if it were given a proper recording.
