DeweyGill SUBS 21st Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Happiness Boys (Billy Jones And Ernest Hare) - Mr. Hoover | A mock conversation between the Presidential candidates for 1928, Herbert Hoover and New York Governor Al Smith. Some gentle barbs about prohibition and cough drops- (Connecting Smith to the unrelated throat lozenge company) and other topical issues
Hoover would win in a Republican landslide. The Democratic deep South would be Smith’s only electoral victories with seven states.
Hoover would be the first elected president from west of the Mississippi, and the first to have a non-European VP pick. (Native American).
He would also preside over the worst economic disaster in US history, just 10 months into his term.

|
DeweyGill SUBS 21st Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMManny Kline - Ringside Table For Two / I'm In Love | A decent band here with Jack Jenny, Artie Shaw, Toots Mondello, Frank Signorelli, Artie Bernstein, Chauncy Morehouse et al.
Seems Bea was bouncing around to various Brunswick sessions for a couple of years before her steady gig with Larry Clinton.
Two more tracks were cut at this session- Hot Spell and Juba, I’ll post them when I stumble across it again.

DeweyGill SUBS 18th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMHoagy Carmichael - Bessie Couldn't Help It / Hot Mamma | Originally recorded by Warner’s Seven Aces, this tune enjoyed a bit of a revival five years later with new versions by a number of artists including Hoagy’s. A good lineup here, Bix in his final recording joined by Jack Teagarden, Jimmy Dorsey, Bud Freeman, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang, Gene Krupa and others. Hoagy Sings, but Irving Brodsky plays piano on this one.

DeweyGill SUBS 13th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMEarl Randolph's Orchestra - Some Day You'll Say O.K. / I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me | Mike: Nat Schilling is an uncommon enough name that I would agree. Some of this era’s nasally tenors tend to sound alike to me.

DeweyGill SUBS 13th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Happy Harmonists - Steady Steppin' Papa / Hot Mittens | Added missing image
|
DeweyGill SUBS 12th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMEarl Randolph's Orchestra - Some Day You'll Say O.K. / I Can't Believe That You're In Love With Me | Bright two step of what will turn out to be a jazz and pop standard, usually played at a much slower tempo than this.
“Nat Schilling” sounds like Irving Kaufman to me
|
DeweyGill SUBS 12th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Badgers - I May Be Wrong (But, I Think You're Wonderful) / Would'nt It Be Wonderful | I have a ton of these Broadways, most like this, are not all that interesting. Generic dance arrangements of current sheet music titles. A few rise above. I’ll try to point them out and when I get to them. Most of these are Plaza recordings.
|
DeweyGill SUBS 12th Jun 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Badgers - Baby Your Mother (Like She Babied You) / Blue River | Despite label information, “Blue River” is an instrumental, and a rather nice jazzy one at that.
The recording date for this Sam Lanin session is September 21, 1927, not 1921.
907 and 908 are control numbers, not matrix #’s
