Duke_J SUBS 17th Mar 2024 | | CD AlbumAirto Moreira And The Gods Of Jazz - Killer Bees | Instrumental foolery in the studio until about halfway through the title track, when they pick up an inconsequential riff; the same characterises the rest of the album to some degree, except for Communion where they play straight, on a jazz triple swing melody.

The whole is a very good quality remastering.

Duke_J SUBS 1st Dec 2021 | | 78 RPMJosephine Baker et les Comedian Harmonists - Sous Le Ciel D'Afrique / Espabilate | Josephine Baker was honoured at the Panthéon in Paris yesterday, the first black woman to receive one of the highest honours in France. She worked in France for the resistance to the Nazi occupation, and in her native USA she worked for the abolishment of racial segregation.
The ceremony was reported on the news in the UK, accompanied for no obvious reason by a speeded up version of one of her records, which made her sound like some sort of freak like Bridget The Midget. In fact she had a very fine voice, using the French vibrato style of the time which we all know from singers like Édith Piaf

Duke_J SUBS 5th Apr 2021 | | CD AlbumPeggy Lee - The Collection | A fine collection of jazz classics by Peggy Lee, well mastered from various sources: you can hear the record surface on some, which could probably have been de-clicked but at least they didn't just muffle the sound and make it unacceptable to anyone who wants to listen to it rather than have it on in the background
Oh for some detailed record notes, but they do at least list the bands on each track. "Summertime" has become such a corny old classic, but here she takes the song in a completely individual manner, elegantly backed with the ensemble The Four Of A Kind

Duke_J SUBS 15th Dec 2020 | | CD AlbumRoadside Picnic - Roadside Picnic | ReviewThe band seem to have taken their name from the sci-fi novel Roadside Picnic by Arkadi and Boris Strugatsky. They continue in the style of "The Canterbury Scene" which was centred around artists including Matching Mole, Gong, Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers. The track titles are obtuse too, but the tunes are sweet and richly harmonic, in a style close to jazz but without the repeating changes.
Morning Song starts the album, maybe in recognition of the Soft Machine who started their album "Softs" with Aubade
