George Slv 5th Apr 2016 | | CinemaThe Shadow Of The Cat (1961) | ReviewIn this "old dark house" in England an old woman is murdered and her cat witnesses it. The "cat knows" who did it. Then commences a cat and mouse game where the killers are afraid of the cat and the cat seeks revenge on them.
Written by George Baxt, Hammer at first was not interested in filming it. Then when they needed an extra film to pair with Curse Of the Werewolf they asked BHP to make it for them. BHP was a short-term partnership including Baxt and Jon Penington. BHP used Hammer's personnel and Bray location, but they owned the rights to it. It was not unusual for other production companies to make films for Hammer, Hammer usually getting the rights for them. Two years later when BHP closed the rights were passed to Hammer.
I find the film very satisfying.

George Slv 2nd Apr 2016 | | CinemaThe Hunt For Red October (1990) | They made a big mistake in not differentiating the crews of the American and Russian subs. Both spoke English, neither had distinctive clothing. What a mess trying to follow the story. They should have used different color uniforms.

George Slv 28th Mar 2016 | | DVDThe Island Of Adventure - Oracle Home Entertainment | Not to be confused with the 1996 Australian TV filming. There is a VHS of that one. This 1982 only has a DVD that is scarce.
In my opinion this production is miserable. Some of the cast is very poor or unpleasant. Acting is minimal. Photography does not look impressive. Go for the 1996.
Norman Bowler here as Bill Smugs looks just like Gareth Hunt as Bill Cunningham in Castle Of Adventure (1990). I wonder if he changed his name.

George Slv 28th Mar 2016 | | VHSThe Castle Of Adventure - Tempo Video | The length was cut from something like 2:30 to 1:58. The full TV show cannot be found. This was a standalone production. Turned out good, captured the mood of the book.
I can't play PAL so I could sell my copy.

George Slv 21st Mar 2016 | | CinemaThe Two Faces Of Dr. Jekyll (1960) | In the US the film ended up in American-International's hands. They first renamed it Jekyll's Inferno, and then House Of Fright after making cuts for sexual content. Posters with the first title are not hard to find. I found one online with the House Of Fright tacked on the bottom.
I seem to recall a newspaper ad for this, with the title and subject not being clear. It did not lead me to go see it.

George Slv 21st Mar 2016 | | CinemaThe Devil Rides Out (1968) | This is one of those films that just had no effect on me. Did not create an atmosphere of suspense or fear or interest. Just moved from one scene to the next in pedestrian fashion.
I'm very put off at Christopher Lee and have to rate him as a poor actor because of it. In what should be a sca-a-a-ry movie, he shows up at the start and just commences to reel off his lines in a careless disinterested manner. No sense for the plot or atmosphere.
|
George Slv 20th Mar 2016 | | CinemaThe Ugly Duckling | The first film I know that used the concept of a Hyde more attractive than Jekyll. Then next year Hammer used the theme in the serious The Two Faces Of Dr. Jekyll (retitled House Of Fright in US). If you are looking for Jerry Lewis's inspiration for The Nutty Professor, it would be House Of Fright.
This film is hopelessly unavailable, and is on all the Hammer wishlists.
Bernard Bresslaw is said to have been good in both roles. Some who recall seeing it say it was entertaining, others say it was not.

George Slv 16th Mar 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - The Sun Collection | Some RCA Sun collections are duds. In the sense that the original masters were not used. The single masters that had the Sun reverb. Or else something else was done to lose it.
On this LP the back cover says Sun Sessions while the cover and label say Sun Collection.

George Slv 2nd Mar 2016 | | TVTaking The Falls (1995 - 1996) | ReviewTwo females run a private investigation company in Niagara Falls (Canajun side). Another valiant attempt to self-produce Canadian content, from Alliance which created some fantastic work in general. Cynthia Dale (of Street Legal) is the ex-cop PI, while Sandra Nelson is the lawyer half. The show is classed as a comedy-drama because, well ... how can females be serious in this kind of stuff.
The Niagara Falls setting raised some hopes, however, umm, they never showed the Falls during the episodes or used the scenic environment. It was just studio work in Toronto. Uhhhh. It had none of the romance or vista or excitement you might hope for. Focused on the SEAMY side of life in this town, which ordinary people don't think about. Prostitution, underworld, sex slavery ... Just failed to capture the concept it should have. Actually hurt people's vision of this grand tourist attraction and wonder of the world. Could just as well have been Taking Hamilton.
It was okay, that's all. Lasted 13 episodes, and not renewed.

George Slv 29th Feb 2016 | | CD AlbumTeresa Brewer - Music! Music! Music! | ReviewReleased in UK when these songs became public domain after 50 years. Restored from the original records. One disc filled to maximum.
Includes her earliest recordings of 1949 on London. Also her 1938 radio appearance on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour at age 7, which includes her interview with him, the Strutters vocal, and the sound of her tap-dancing to Sing Sing Sing on piano. She won that episode. The CD finishes at 1954 with Coral recordings.
The Thing is full length at 2:22. Music! Music! Music! is of course the original London label hit.
Here is the correct page for this one at Amazon.com.

George Slv 29th Feb 2016 | | TVAmerika (1987) | Rated 7/10Oh yes, anti-Communism. You know what's coming next. How many will there be on this site who will express disdain for it and for "McCarthyism" and such?
To the rest of you: patriotic Americans succeeded in convincing the ABC network to run something to counter the constant pro-communist propaganda in the media. This was one mini-series, quite extended. The ratings were okay, but not spectacular, maybe because it was drawn out. So of course fodder for political commentators.
But to make a long story short, soon after, the Disney Company bought ABC, and made sure nothing like that would ever be shown on TV ever again. That's how it works.
The story showed how Russians came in and stormed Congress and massacred it. Kristofferson is the hero, who is first seen in prison, and when released gets involved in resistance. No there was not a victorious ending ... but for some that is a happy ending. Now you can be happy about Obama and things like the assassination of Chief Justice Scalia.

George Slv 25th Feb 2016 | | CinemaSea Wife (1957) | I watched this video, and wondered what the point of the movie was. Seems like much ado about nothing. Joan Collins in her early years was still getting leading roles.
Four people in a lifeboat showing various attitudes and concocting various dramas to fill the time. Joan is supposedly tempted by some of the men but doesn't go along. At the end we find out why. But so what?

George Slv 24th Feb 2016 | | CinemaSunburn | Rated 2/10Does someone actually need to know things like "Richard Sarafian credited as Richard C. Sarafian"?
This independent production would never have passed thru a major studio. An amateurish attempt at passing some time, for who knows what. A collection of actors who couldn't find work elsewhere. Farrah Fawcett-Majors had been black-listed for quitting her Charlie's Angels contract. Who would have wanted Charles Grodin for anything?
A story that is nonsense after nonsense. If you want glimpses of some of the stars, take a look out of curiousity.

George Slv 24th Feb 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumAndy Williams - Canadian Sunset | Not an exact reissue. I Like Your Kind Of Love and Butterfly were dropped.
There's a story here about Andy buying the Cadence catalog himself for the very purpose of suppressing these rock and roll oriented songs of his, which he hated. I'm not sure of the timing. Columbia had the catalog here and reissued it.
As time went on I assume it was Andy who was responsible for Cadence reissues like the Everly Brothers on Barnaby etc.

George Slv 23rd Feb 2016 | | CinemaLand Of The Pharaohs (1955) | It's a good film of the ancient history genre. Had been shown on TV, and is on DVD. Released by Warner Bros, the widescreen was 2.55.
Joan Collins beginning to be a major star in Hollywood, she defied "amorous advance" ultimatums by studio bigwig creeps, and then did not receive major starring roles after that. She tried out for Cleopatra.
But if you haven't seen it, DO NOT view the Youtube video that shows the burial ending. And please don't post it here.

George Slv 18th Feb 2016 | | Vinyl AlbumElla Fitzgerald - Sweet Songs For Swingers | ReviewThese are sweet ballads, but they do swing. Frank DeVol devised hard jazz arrangements, and in fact it may seem humorous when you consider how this anomaly works so well. In other recordings I'd call a few of these ballads a lame waste of time, but none of these are boring.
