Gill Sans SUBS ● 23rd Jun 2024		Classical Item Istvan Kertesz, Lajos Kozma - Kodály: Psalmus Hungaricus, Peacock Variations	See also the 2010 CD Decca CD 4330802 which has these tracks with the same artists but with additional tracks with extra credited artists who were too young for the 1971 recording unless at the time they were among the Brighton or Wandsworth choirs.
Gill Sans SUBS ● 22nd Jun 2024		Classical Item John McCabe - Herbert Howells	Review Howells dedicated his three sets of Clavichord Pieces to his musical friends, and in particular to harpsichord maker Herbert Lambert. They are written in recognition of the style of English Tudor musicians who had influenced Howells' writing, not as pastiches of the compositional styles of his composer friends. The first book was written in 1927, the second in 1941, the third in 1961. For the first book "Lambert's Clavichord", Lambert's Fireside was written at Lambert's Fireside in Somerset, Fellowes's Delight for Edmund Fellowes, Hughes's Ballet for Herbert Hughes, Wortham's Grounde for H E Wortham, Sargent's Fantastic Sprite for Sir Malcolm Sargent, Foss's Dump for H.J. Foss, My Lord Sandwich's Dreame for George Montagu, 9th Earl of Sandwich, Samuel's Air for Harold Samuel, De La Mare's Pavane for poet Walter de la Mare, Sir Hughes's Galliard for conductor Hugh Allen, H H His Fancy for himself, and Sir Richard's Toye for Sir Richard Terry. Gill Sans SUBS ● 22nd Jun 2024		Classical Item Pablo Casals - J. S. Bach: The Six Suites For Cello Solo	The Cello Suites were introduced to the wider public by Casals when he recorded this set. Suites 2 and 3 were recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1936, the others in Paris from 1938–9. The set has remained in the EMI catalogue throughout the world ever since, being remastered for vinyl in 1957, and subsequently for CD many times. Gill Sans SUBS ● 21st Jun 2024		CD Album Gracious - Gracious ! / This Is... Gracious !!	'Fugue In 'D' Minor' is more or less Bach's 'Little Fugue in G Minor, BWV 578, transcribed down, which makes for a pleasantly 'Classical' piece by this Surrey-based 5-piece progrock band. [YouTube Video]
Gill Sans SUBS ● 20th Jun 2024		Classical Item Birmingham Conservatoire Chamber Choir - Invocation: Choral Music By Kenneth Leighton And James MacMillan	Review The choice of the brutal image for the cover illustration of this record is explained by the text of Cantos Sagrados (sacred Songs). "Identity" is about finding unidentified mutilated bodies on a river bank, and is an appropriately violent musical setting. The text was written by contemporary Chilean poet Ariel Dorfman, being about the killings in the coup when Pinochet's forces overthrew Allende, and the subsequent disappearances. The illustration is El Tres De Mayo by Francisco Goya, portraying the Spanish resistance to Napoleon's occupation of Madrid, May 1808. The two composers complement each other in style and quality on this compilation, MacMillan having studied under Leighton in Edinburgh. None of the tracks is yet on YT, but you can find a recording of Identity, made by Christopher Bell and the National Youth Choir of Scotland, which makes this recording by Spicer sound very slow by comparison. ✔︎ Helpful Review?

Gill Sans SUBS ● 13th Jun 2024		Classical Item Jane Watts - Great European Organs No. 7: Westminster Abbey	For his 'Variations on a Noel' Dupré has chosen to set variations on the theme of the pretty hymn tune Noel Nouvelet (Now The Green Blade Riseth). The 'Introduction' is almost note-for-note taken from the hymn, played very quietly; thereafter the arrangements vary between tranquil and violent, and all points in between. The main artist looks like [various artists] with different artists shown for each track. It would be easier to work out the full details if we knew what the initials T.D.R., A.R., T.S., and M.S. meant.

If any details need changing please submit a 'correction' and the mods will (eventually) get round to it. Meanwhile you can add performers yourself.
