LaurenceD SUBS 21st Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Dave Brubeck Quartet - Music From "West Side Story" And Other Works | This entry is for the re-titled release with the same cat no., but with a new cover; the original title, "Bernstein Plays Brubeck Plays Bernstein", is still present on the labels.
I entered the date (Aug 1960) from the original release. If we have a separate entry for that earlier one, which is not present as yet, maybe we should adjust this date. It might be from around 1962.

LaurenceD SUBS 16th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumMary Lou Williams - Mary Lou Williams | The album included a 4-page insert, which is missing from my copy.
Also pressed with Folkways labels, using the same cat no.

LaurenceD SUBS 16th Nov 2022 | | 78 RPMBunny Berigan - Hits By Bunny Berigan | Added labels from: "The Imperial Record Co., New York"
As I understand it, the first handful of Elite pressings were released by Imperial, before Eli Oberstein moved Elite over to The Classic Record Co.
[Exactly right. Your labels have now been moved up. Mod.]

LaurenceD SUBS 13th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Four Brothers [jazz] - Together Again! | These were Serge Chaloff's last recording sessions. He died July 16, 1957.
Something went wrong with the track title designations on the cover and labels. From the songs that I'm able to identify by listening, those titles line up with the tracks on the opposite sides of the album. The matrix numbers on the labels match those on their respective sides.

LaurenceD SUBS 13th Nov 2022 | | Classical ItemSarah Chang, Philadelphia Orchestra, Wolfgang Sawallisch - Paganini: Violin Concerto No. 1 · Saint-Saens: Havanaise, Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso | Added scans from Columbia House edition
|
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Nov 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumLoretta Lynn - Your Squaw Is On The Warpath | You're right, Ed, that song was built around the melody of a cigarette jingle ("You can take Salem out of the country, but ..." became "You can take Barney out of the barroom, but ..."), and had to be removed because of copyright issues. Which is too bad because the song fit in nicely with the "squaw on the warpath" theme.

Info from elviscostello.info:

LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Nov 2022 | | CD AlbumFrank Sinatra with the Red Norvo Quintet - Live In Australia, 1959 | These recordings were obtained from tapes possessed by Bobby Sherrick. Selections from those tapes appeared on an unauthorized Bravura CD in 1990. See here for lots more info: steve hoffman forum
BTW, according to one poster in the above thread, there was no April 1 concert as stated in the notes of this release. Instead, both shows took place on March 31.
In any event, while the sound quality on this release is not optimal (a bit fuzzy), the performance is outstanding and well worth checking out.

LaurenceD SUBS 1st Nov 2022 | | CD AlbumSimon And Garfunkel - Sounds Of Silence | Thanks PhilMH, that's helpful; Date adjusted accordingly...
|
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Oct 2022 | | CD AlbumSimon And Garfunkel - Early Simon And Garfunkel | As is often the case with these compilations, some of the selections have no involvement by Simon or Garfunkel.
Tracks 24-27 are by Tom Layton and Jerry Darcey; see here and here for details.
Also, it is generally agreed that track 9 is by a different duo, see here and here.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Oct 2022 | | CD AlbumSimon And Garfunkel - Sounds Of Silence | The release year of 1988 is an estimate, it may be off by plus or minus one. I was unable to find a definite reference in the trade mags, including CMJ.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 29th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumPaul Revere And The Raiders - Spirit Of '67 | Another set of labels, similar to those from checkm8, but with added "GP 12".
|
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumFifth Flight - Into Smoke Tree Village | Various sites date this at 1970; I cannot confirm that date, but the choice of cover songs would point in that direction.
I don't understand the high prices attributed to this LP. It's possibly because of various commercial websites declaring this as a "psych classic" because it features some fuzz guitar here and there. But honestly, these guys sound comparable to some high school dance bands that I heard back in 1968. It's fun to listen to, but don't spend too much money on a copy.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Omega Orchestra, Heinz Sandauer - Destination Moon | Leith Stevens' soundtrack was originally released by Columbia in 1950. This is a later recording.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Oct 2022 | | CD AlbumPete Shelley - Heaven & The Sea | Not quite sure if this is correct, but I have listed this version separately from the existing EU release. The only difference between the two that I can see is the GEMA marking on that one's disc.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 24th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumElton Britt - Beyond The Sunset | [YouTube Video]
|
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Oct 2022 | | CD AlbumSham 69 - Rare And Unreleased | The tracks on this cd that I found interesting were the early versions of songs with Dave on vocals, which were eventually released with modified lyrics, new titles and Jimmy on vocals. For example, "TV Times" evolved into "Lost On Highway 46".
|
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBarnaby Conrad - The Day Manolete Was Killed | After listening to this, it sure sounds like the LP (or the TV program that preceded it) was the inspiration for the b-side of this Flo & Eddie single.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kirby Stone Four - The Kirby Stone Touch | This entry is for the original stereo release, although my scans are from a later pressing with
- standard Columbia labels from around 1962
- added text on the back cover:
Special Re-issue
Columbia Special Products
Not For Re-sale
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Oct 2022 | | Classical ItemThe Frankenland State Symphony Orchestra, Erich Kloss - Dittersdorf: Symphony In A Minor | Looks like these recordings were first released in 1952 (Lyrichord LL 26) and reviewed that year.
This album contains rechanneled stereo versions.
I am unable to determine the release date for this one, but it may be from around 1973.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumElton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road | Added label & disc scans from a yellow vinyl copy. Unfortunately I cannot provide images for the first disc, as my copy contains two of the second disc!
|
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJane Powell, Cliff Robertson, Keith Andes, Kaye Ballard, Tommy Noonan - From The Soundtrack Of The RKO Radio Picture: The Girl Most Likely | This soundtrack was originally planned as an RKO-Unique release for early 1957, but it was shelved when the film release was delayed. Somehow it turned up on Capitol in 1958.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumEarl Bostic - Alto Magic In Hi-Fi | Added back cover and alternate label images. The main difference in my labels { 3105014, 3105015 } are the matrix numbers; but the runouts show the opposite numbers, e.g. for side 1, label = K12-195, runout = K12-196.
So as it works out for my copy, the sides as played correspond to the label titles (but not the cover titles).
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Oct 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumLale Andersen - Direct From Germany | Tracks A7 and B7 were released on King single 45-5478. Each of those tracks on the LP and single has an added spoken bit in English by a male voice during the instrumental intro. For example on A7:
"Dame Lale, twilight and I'll be with you.
We'll take that walk to our favorite cafe.
You know, you're quite a girl."
