LaurenceD SUBS 9th Apr 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Country Opera | We had an entry here for the stereo release with no images, to which someone added scans for the mono release. I created a mono entry T 5045 and moved the images over there. As a result, the ownership on this one might not be quite correct now.

LaurenceD SUBS 9th Apr 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJudy Henske - The First Concert Album | From Jack's liner notes: "The first night, liquor wasn't served and the audience reactions were not what we expected. The second night, liquor was served and everyone reacted as though they'd been drinking. The musicians also had their share of refreshments ..."
Listening to Judy's introductions, it sounds like she had her share of those refreshments. But her singing is just fine...

LaurenceD SUBS 9th Apr 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Goldcoast Singers - Here They Are! | Some differences in track titles between cover & labels; I used the cover titles, which seemed more correct.
Billboard Dec 24, 1966, p.50: "A 'Special' Way of Selling":
"... This World Pacific release had virtually no sales throughout the country until Pellegrini and Nordstrand [WFMT Chicago] began playing a cut called Plastic Jesus ..."
[YouTube Video]
I don't know about Chicago, but growing up in the Los Angeles area, I recall that some time after this release (can't remember just when), it seemed like a lot of folks were singing that "Plastic Jesus" song. I guess that some local radio station had played it...
BTW listening to this again, it sounds like these guys just borrowed the melody from Woody's "Oklahoma Hills" refrain.

LaurenceD SUBS 4th Apr 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Hootenanny At Carnegie Hall | My images are from the 2nd pressing, with © 1963 on the back cover, along with the 121 W. 47 St. address.

LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Apr 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - V-Disc | There was an additional 2-disc set (OPCD-4538) of V-Disc recordings released. Looks like these two sets were available for purchase separately, as the booklet for this set does not reference the other set.
A nice selection of tracks, well researched and annotated, with one flaw: all of the recordings have been 'rechanneled' for stereo.

LaurenceD SUBS 30th Mar 2022 | | Classical ItemGrumiaux Trio - Mozart: Divertimento KV 563 | The Fugues in K. 404a are selections from Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, scored for string trio by Mozart:
- No. 1 adapted from Book 1, No. 8 in D sharp minor, BWV 853
- No. 2 adapted from Book 2, No. 14 in F sharp minor, BWV 883
- No. 3 adapted from Book 2, No. 13 in F sharp, BWV 882
The Adagio preludes are original compositions by Mozart.

LaurenceD SUBS 25th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumGlen Campbell, Rod Dillard, Doug Dillard, Dean Webb - 12 String Guitar! / Folk Blues & Blue Grass | It looks like this release was first released around August 1963 with no "Folkswingers" credit (as seen on this version), and was listed in the trade mags as by "Various Artists". Sometime thereafter, around October, the Folkswingers designation was added to subsequent pressings.
So for this item I used the artist credit from the back of the cover and linked that artist to The Folkswingers. Hope that's ok.
BTW this one is pressed on a dark red translucent vinyl.

LaurenceD SUBS 25th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumRedd Foxx - Laff Of The Party: Volume 2 | Added alternate pair of labels; cover is the same as edlongus' { 1999545, 1999546 }
|
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumRedd Foxx - Laff Of The Party: Volume 1 | Added another set of label variants; the cover is the same as that from edlongus { 2180120, 2180122 }.
I also merged another entry; only difference was the "Volume 1" appended to the album title.
BTW the cover lists track A1 as "Backward Conscience". After listening to that track, I still can't say which was the intended title.

LaurenceD SUBS 16th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumPete Rugolo And His Orchestra - Music For Hi-Fi Bugs | These sessions were recorded with mikes set up for mono and stereo mixes. After this LP was released in mono, the stereo tape (Mercury MDS3-1) was released in 1957.
The stereo tracks appeared on later LP releases:
- Mercury SR 60118 Music From Out Of Space (1959)
- Mercury SR 60119 Rhythm Meets Rugolo (1960)
- (with track A1 retitled as "Stereo Space Man")

LaurenceD SUBS 15th Mar 2022 | | Classical ItemE. Power Biggs - Bach Organ Favorites Vol. 6 | Hi Eric, I think that the problem is that we had some transposed digits (I tweaked the track entry); the concerto in question is actually BWV 592, and that number would have led you to Prince Johann Ernst of Saxe-Weimar.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 8th Mar 2022 | | 78 RPMBenny Goodman Sextet - Benny Goodman Sextet Session | Added scans from disc 36924 with personnel credits. My copy of the album is identical to the existing images in this posting, except for that disc.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 8th Mar 2022 | | 78 RPMTex Beneke - Stormy Weather / Stormy Weather | I have adjusted the release date for this one, from 1945 to 1948. It was not listed among the first batch of Coin Operators releases in the 1945 Billboard advert, but was mentioned in a Billboard ad from June 26, 1948. Which makes sense, as the original single release of Stormy Weather (20-2374) did not appear until around September of 1947.

LaurenceD SUBS 5th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumHerbie Hancock - Monster | Added larger front cover scan with respect to rocket71
|
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Hollywood Rock ´N Roll Record Hop | First pressings of this release have the Modern labels. The one that I have posted has the Modern cover, but with the Crown 5011 labels.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 5th Mar 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumNeil Sedaka - Neil Sedaka And The Tokens And Coins | Tracks A1 and B1 are from the Melba 104 single; track A3 sounds like something from the same 1956 session, probably the track that Praguefrank refers to as "Don't Go".
To my ear, tracks A1,A2,A3 and B1,B2 sound like rechanneled stereo, and the others (which do not sound like Neil Sedaka) might be actual stereo.

LaurenceD SUBS 28th Feb 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumRay Scott With Herb Carneal And Halsey Hall - "Last Of The Ninth..." Twins Pennant Drive In '65 | Growing up on the West coast, I did not have the opportunity to hear these guys, but listening to these highlights I can appreciate what a terrific broadcasting team they were:
Ray Scott (1919 - 1998)
Herb Carneal (1923 - 2007)
Halsey Hall (1898 - 1977)
This bio of Halsey Hall from SABR is quite entertaining.

LaurenceD SUBS 28th Feb 2022 | | Classical ItemAlfred Drake With Jane Wilson And Supporting Cast - Down In The Valley | Weill and Sundgaard conceived this work as a "folk-opera", so I have included it here.
The notes state that four American folk-songs are woven into the work: "Sourwood Mountain", "The Little Black Train", "The Lonesome Dove" and "Hop Up, My Ladies".

LaurenceD SUBS 28th Feb 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumTimi Yuro - Soul! | This release is not actually the Soul! LP as we know it, but instead consists of tracks selected from Timi Yuro's first four Liberty LPs.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Feb 2022 | | CD AlbumRed Holloway - Legends Of Acid Jazz | I admit that I don't quite know what constitutes acid jazz, but I'm pretty sure that these tracks from the 1960s don't fit that description. Anyway, once you get past that artwork, there is some pretty good music to be found in the Prestige "Legends of Acid Jazz" series; I think that they are all twofers like this one.

LaurenceD SUBS 16th Feb 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumCarolyn Hester - Carolyn Hester | Sorry about the masking tape on the cover... tried to remove it, but did more harm than good. A better cover scan would be welcome.

LaurenceD SUBS 16th Feb 2022 | | Classical ItemGidon Kremer, Kim Kashkashian, Valery Afanassiev - Mozart: Kegelstatt-Trio ⸱ Duos Für Violine Und Viola | This is the 'alternate' version of the Kegelstatt, substituting a violin for the original clarinet part. The transcription was provided by the publisher (presumably to increase sales), possibly with Mozart's consent.
The purported story of the duos for violin/viola is that Michael Haydn was assigned the task of composing a set of six such pieces for the Archbishop of Salzburg, but due to illness was only able to complete four in time. As a favor Mozart provided the additional two duos. One detail that could conflict with this anecdote (from pupils of M. Haydn) is that Mozart's two compositions were published in 1782, one year prior to the four by Haydn.
For those who would like to compare the duos from both composers, M. Haydn's are catalogued as MH 335-338 / P120, P127-129
