LaurenceD SUBS ● 24th Sep 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumOriginal Broadway Cast - Lenny | Added scans for cover and labels. The 12-page booklet and poster are missing from my copy.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 12th Sep 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumBaxter Robertson - Panorama View | I was curious about the USGS image on the cover and so tried to locate it, assuming that it might be somewhere in Southern California. Couldn't find it. But I know that the (coastline) inset is of the Sycamore Creek area in Santa Barbara.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 12th Sep 2021 | | 78 RPMThe Charioteers - Sweet and Low | I only possess this damaged cover, no discs, so... label scans are welcomed.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 11th Sep 2021 | | 78 RPMWoody Herman - Blues On Parade: The Band That Plays The Blues | Hello fixbutte, I also have a copy of this album. Shall I fill in the missing label scans?
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 5th Sep 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumBurl Ives - The Wayfaring Stranger | Yeah, in those cases where the track titles varied between cover/insert/labels, I chose the form that was used 2 out of 3 times... :-)

LaurenceD SUBS ● 31st Aug 2021 | | Classical ItemKiri Te Kanawa - Kiri | Most of these selections are show tunes, but there's a bit of classical stuff here, so I thought it might be worth posting...
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 30th Aug 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumDuane Eddy - Duane Eddy | The labels look ok, but these cover and inner sleeve images are from the UK issue (EST 2034).
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 29th Aug 2021 | | 78 RPMHot Lips Page - Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You / The Lady In Bed | Here's the b-side, xiphophilos. Little difference if any, I think.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 28th Aug 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumSusan Reed - I Know My Love | Although it's not mentioned in the sleeve notes, these tracks seem to have been culled from two RCA Victor albums from 1947, M-1086 "Folk Songs And Ballads" and M-1107 "Folk Songs And Ballads, Volume II". However I cannot account for "Fare Thee Well"; perhaps it had been previously released with a different title...
Just speculating: I wonder if the positive response from Susan's Elektra LP from 1954 prompted someone at RCA to unearth these recordings for a cash-in attempt.
The 1954 release date is an estimate; could be early 1955.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 28th Aug 2021 | | 78 RPMHot Lips Page - Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You / The Lady In Bed | Added an alternate a-side label. The personnel credits are missing one line on this one and for image 2229393 as well.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 22nd Aug 2021 | | 78 RPMHit Of The Week Orchestra - Crying Myself To Sleep | Apparently there are two takes of this track; based on the runout my copy seems to have take A.
I listened to both takes at http://pdx78s.cdbpdx.com/HOTW/index1.html and they are nearly identical; very hard to differentiate between the two.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 22nd Aug 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumLes Paul And Mary Ford - Swingin' South!! | Regarding the recording dates in the notes: The tracks from the 1962 sessions all feature Mary Ford on vocals, while the tracks from the 1963 sessions are instrumentals.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 22nd Aug 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumFrank Heppinstall - Trio By Heppinstall | Unfortunately Frank's name was misspelled on the labels as Neppinstall.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 22nd Aug 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumHumble Pie - Thunderbox | Added front cover from a later version, with the 'keyhole' filled in.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 20th Aug 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumLotte Lenya - Lotte Lenya Sings Berlin Theatre Songs By Kurt Weill | Original release in gatefold sleeve with 6-page booklet. My scans are from a later pressing in a plain jacket.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 7th Aug 2021 | | 78 RPMAl Dexter And His Troopers - Saturday Night Boogie (サタデイ・ナイト・ブギー) / 88 Boogie (八十八ブギー) | An interesting pairing of artists... well I suppose that both songs fit the description of "American Folk Music Instrumental".
I estimated the release date at 1950 based on surrounding issues, but it could be as late as 1951.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 29th Jul 2021 | | 78 RPMTommy Tucker Time - Deep In The Heart Of Texas / Tangerine | This rendition of "Deep In The Heart Of Texas" has a verse that I had not heard before:
- The Indians used to howl with fright, and raise heck every night (clap, refrain)
- The covered wagons rolled along, and hoof beats sang a song (", ")
- Now the Indian arrows used to fly, like raindrops from the sky (", ")
- The cowboy raised his gun and cussed, the redskins bit the dust (", ")

LaurenceD SUBS ● 27th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis | The second disc containing the August 21 1969 concert is the main reason to track down this release.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 27th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumGerry Mulligan Quartet - Pleyel Concert Vol. 2 | This is quickly becoming a favorite of mine; inspired performance, good sound quality and an attentive and enthusiastic audience. Looking forward to hearing Volume 1.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 24th Jul 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumCyril Jackson - Afro-Stereo | Apparently this LP was released in stereo format only.
I saw the notes at the Esoteric LP CPT-551, but it looks like that record company decided to change its name to Counterpoint by this time, as seen on the back cover:
- Successors to Esoteric Records, Inc.
- Copyright 1958, Counterpoint Recordings, Inc., 333 Sixth Ave., New York
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 24th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumMonty Python - Monty Python's Contractual Obligation Album | This version omits the track "Farewell To John Denver". Instead, track 8 "Medical Love Song" includes a 30-second bit at the end ("The item which follows has been omitted on legal advice", etc.) which i think is actually a bit longer than the omitted track.
Note the 'Martydom' typo on track 12 listings for this release.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 21st Jul 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumMose Allison - Takes To The Hills | Tracks A3,B3 taken from Columbia CS 8240 "Transfiguration Of Hiram Brown" (1960)
Tracks A5,A6,B5,B6 taken from Columbia CS 8365 "I Love The Life I Live" (1961)
The remaining 6 tracks are new as of this LP.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 21st Jul 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumKenny Solms And Gail Parent - Our Wedding Album Or The Great Society Affair | Added label scans.
The back cover (and Billboard) indicate a stereo release (JLPS 3028), but I have yet to see any visual evidence of its existence.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 17th Jul 2021 | | 78 RPMBenny Goodman - Let's Dance (Theme Song) / Boy Meets Horn | Added b-side variant scan (2699872) and paired it with Diognes' (411844).
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 15th Jul 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumOriginal Broadway Cast - The Roar Of The Greasepaint | The play opened on Broadway on 16 May 1965. This is a case where the original cast album was recorded by RCA Victor prior to the New York premier.
|
LaurenceD SUBS ● 15th Jul 2021 | | Vinyl AlbumDella Reese - What Do You Know About Love? | I added an alternate back cover scan (2697352) and paired it with Diognes' front cover (643724), which matches mine. While I was at it, I expanded the composer credits as shown on the cover.
Note that for track A2 "When I Fall In Love", the cover (correctly) credits Edward Heyman and Victor Young, while the label (incorrectly) credits Albert Selden. The 1952 Heyman/Young composition is the much more frequently heard one, versus the Selden song (from the 1948 musical Small Wonder). In fact I have yet to hear a recording of Selden's tune.

LaurenceD SUBS ● 4th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumLalo Guerrero - Lalo Guerrero's Greatest Parodies | SOS = Sounds Of Sancho
Note that these are all new recordings, not the original singles.
Daniel A. Castro, AKA Sancho, was the host of the "Sancho Show" on KPCC, the Pasadena City College radio station. If I remember correctly, this release was the brainchild of Sancho, with the proceeds going to local charities. I purchased this not long after its release directly from Sancho's website.
As to the absence of "Pancho Lopez" on this collection: I think that this may have to do with some legal issues resulting from Lalo's 1955 single on the Real label. As I understand it, clearance had not been obtained for the use of the "Davy Crockett" song from Wonderland, and so Lalo Guerrero and Walt Disney met and agreed to split the royalties from the Real single. However, Guerrero also signed an agreement which prevented him from releasing any more recordings of that song (although it seems that a few did leak out here and there).

LaurenceD SUBS ● 4th Jul 2021 | | CD AlbumKatmandu - A Case For The Blues | I included this release with the German Platinum label, but note the mention of "Made in France by MPO". As I understand it, this Platinum label was based in Switzerland, a subsidiary of Astan Music AG. They contracted out the manufacturing of their CDs to various firms in Germany, France and the Netherlands if I'm not mistaken.
Here is a story from Billboard, Dec 28 1985 "50 Tons of Disks Seized in German, Swiss Raids" which describes some trouble they encountered over licensing issues.
