LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Jun 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumLive [70's] - Live | One of a pair of self-released LPs by this group, both recorded at the same venue. The location of the Beef and Barrel is not mentioned, but it may be the one in Schaumburg IL, which was operating in 1974, and had live music.
These same four performers also participated in the making of an LP by Byron Keith Daugherty titled "Back Door Man" on Stanza, ca. early 1975

LaurenceD SUBS 29th May 2020 | | 78 RPMFrankie And Her Boys - Not On The First Night / The Laziest Gal In Town | A somewhat misleading artist credit, as these are recordings from 1940 by Frank Trumbauer and his Orchestra with Fredda Gibson (aka Georgia Gibbs) on vocals. Sides previously released on:
- Varsity 8223 "The Laziest Gal In Town"
- Varsity 8225 "Not On The First Nite Baby"
LaurenceD SUBS 27th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe King's Men - Barber Shop Ballads | The 1950 release date is an estimate. The original 78-rpm version of this album (MGM 18) was released in 1948.
LaurenceD SUBS 27th May 2020 | | Classical ItemMalan, Thompson, Sutherland - Efrem Zimbalist Sr. And Jr. | Father and son composers... thanks to Roy Malan for getting these works recorded and released.
LaurenceD SUBS 27th May 2020 | | 78 RPMFrank Luther - Magic Hearts Of Candy / Hoppy Toad / The Hootie Owls / Wallie Woodpecker | On each side, the two tracks are continuous with no break.
LaurenceD SUBS 26th May 2020 | | CD AlbumThe Band - The Band | Hi leonard, I have a US copy with the same disc as yours (887215) and the insert seems to be the same as shown here, but my inlay has a different barcode: 7 6218-51447-2 5
Does that match with yours? Maybe we should create a new entry...
LaurenceD SUBS 26th May 2020 | | CD AlbumSmall Faces - Nice | The interviews are wonderful and quite extensive. Almost worth the price just for the booklet.
LaurenceD SUBS 25th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumRichard And Willie - Red White And Blue From A Black Point Of View | I remember seeing this 'duo' back in the day; it might have been on the Flip Wilson show. Compared with this recording, they had to clean up their routine considerably for network TV.
LaurenceD SUBS 25th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumОрэра - Орэра | A few remarks:
A4 = Strangers In The Night; sung in English (phonetically)
A5 features yodeling
It looks like some composer credits were transliterated to Russian Cyrillic and then back to Latin script again, resulting in things such as: Kaempfert -> Кемпферт -> Campferth

LaurenceD SUBS 23rd May 2020 | | 78 RPMVivian Marshall - Forever Amber (Wish I Were Back Between The Covers) Part I / Forever Amber (Wish I Were Back Between The Covers) Part II | Tentatively dating this one as 1948. The record is a response to the film Forever Amber, released in October 1947. Despite the fact that Kathleen Winsor's novel was cleaned up somewhat for the screenplay adaptation, the National Legion of Decency condemned the film for its "immoral" content, and a few weeks after the initial showing the film was pulled and re-edited to pacify the protestors.
In this recording comedienne Vivian Marshall speaks for the lead character, Amber St. Clair, lamenting the fact that her bedroom activities were omitted from the film.
BB Jan 10, 1948 In Short (p.35): Vivian Marshall, chirp at the Kona Club, San Francisco, cut a record for Tag called "What I Did Between Covers I Can't Do on the Screen"

LaurenceD SUBS 21st May 2020 | | 78 RPMDeep River Boys - What Did He Say (The Mumble Song) / I'm Sorry I Didn't Say I'm Sorry | The a-side was apparently inspired by the Mumbles character from the Dick Tracy comic strip. That character was introduced in 1947, and was seemingly killed off in December of that year (but somehow reappeared in 1955).

LaurenceD SUBS 19th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Chile Vencera! | I don't have a precise release date, but the matrix numbers (29329,29330) seem to point to 1976-77
LaurenceD SUBS 17th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumGloria Jones - Come Go With Me | I've seen mono copies of this LP here and there, but it seems that the stereo version is much harder to obtain.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Cramps - Songs The Lord Taught Us | Added scans from 2nd pressing with 1980 copyright and correct track listings on cover.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumTommy Edwards - It's All In The Game | Added some (tattered) cover scans and sharper label scans; as noted, the cover looks very much like that of the U.S. release
LaurenceD SUBS 15th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumLes Baxter - Moog Rock | Many of the track titles on the front cover differ somewhat from those on the back cover and labels; I have entered the ones from the labels.
LaurenceD SUBS 15th May 2020 | | Classical ItemHausmusik - Beethoven: Septet, String Quintet | Added images from BMG Direct Marketing release.
LaurenceD SUBS 9th May 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Platters - Remember When | I added scans from my stereo copy; A couple of things I should mention:
- to clarify the notes, both the mono and stereo LPs were issued with the earlier and later cover designs (mine being of the later).
- the previously posted front cover image (499754) is from the Netherlands release (135 106 MCY). I have hidden it for now; when we have an NL entry for it we can move it over.
- the track order for the stereo LP differs slightly from that of the mono; tracks A5 & A6 are swapped. The label reflects that change in order, but the cover does not, so I have changed the track order as per the label. As far as I can determine, this is the case with all stereo releases.

LaurenceD SUBS 30th Apr 2020 | | CD AlbumThee Midniters - Greatest | From Mark Guerrero, here's a terrific review of this cd, plus a description of the reunion concert to celebrate its release (House of Blues, Hollywood, January 28, 2003)
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Apr 2020 | | 78 RPMRudy Vallée And His Connecticut Yankees - Rudy Vallée Surprises, No. 1 / Rudy Vallée Surprises, No. 2 | The A-side (Red Stanley) features parodies of Sweet Sue and Dinah.
The B-side (Cyril Smith) features the routine known as "How Fights Start In Saloons".
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Apr 2020 | | CD AlbumBee Gees - High Civilization | images and barcode are from the Columbia House edition
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Apr 2020 | | Classical ItemJulius Katchen, L'Orchestre De La Suisse Romande, Ernest Ansermet - Piano Concertos | Note to MR B PAGE: I removed an item identical to this entry, posted at the same time; presumably from an inadvertent click on 'Submit This Item' while the website was spinning...
I see that one of our mods had made the same exact adjustments to each entry as well ;-)
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Apr 2020 | | 78 RPMEarl "Fatha" Hines and his "new sounds" - I Don't Hear Sweet Music Anymore / Almost Like Being In Love | The Varieties were: Gene Reed, Dicky Wells, Leroy Harris and Jerome Richardson.
This Nocturne label released various LPs and EPs. As far as I know, this is their only single.
LaurenceD SUBS 8th Apr 2020 | | Classical ItemPhiladelphia Orchestra, Eugene Ormandy - Dello Joio: Suite ("Air Power") | The TV series premiered on November 11, 1956. The mono LP (ML 5214) was released in late 1957, while the stereo LP was not released until 1959. Stereo copies are somewhat harder to acquire; I would think that interest in the series would have waned over time, which may account for that.
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Apr 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumBuffalo Bob Smith And Howdy Doody - Be A Ventriloquist | A bit of info about doll manufacturer Eugene Goldberger here.
Apparently the lessons are narrated by someone named Larry Marks.
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Apr 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumTyler King And The Twisteens - Twistin' Time | A rather worn cover; better scans are welcomed. Consensus for a release date seems to be 1961, but I'm not positive.
The tracks on this LP can be found on a wide variety of compilations, with varying performer credits; for instance see this French EP.
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Apr 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumMickey Katz And His Orchestra - Katz Puts On The Dog | Added scans, sorry about the pencil tracing around the dog on the back. At least they didn't use crayons...
Title variations on cover:
- A5: Pesach In Portugal
- B1: Feet Up, Pat Him On The Pippick
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Mar 2020 | | 78 RPMSpike Jones And His City Slickers - All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth) / Happy New Year | Looks good fredhoyt. I wonder if "the one, the only, the original" is in reference to some other version of the song. I'm not aware of any others prior to Nat Cole's recording in 1949.
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Mar 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumJerry Goldsmith - A Patch Of Blue | Added scans for cover back and labels; the labels state "Original Sound Tract Recording" ;-)
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Mar 2020 | | 78 RPMPete Peterson With Scott Seely Trio - Kimebo-Kimebo / Even The Angels Cried | I'll admit defeat, cannot find any reference to this label.
