LaurenceD SUBS 12th Nov 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumKing Crimson - Après Cosmic Était | My copy is a later pressing using the 'pig' labels.
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Nov 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Vagabonds - The Vagabonds | The original Unique release was circa 1956; this one would seem to be from around 1960, rather late in RKO's timeline, but I am unable to quite pin it down as yet.
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Nov 2018 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - The Old Scotchman's Broadcast Of Thomson's Home Run Part 1 / The Old Scotchman's Broadcast Of Thomson's Home Run Part 2 | This is not the home run call that I'm used to hearing in sports highlights ("The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the Pennant!" from Russ Hodges at WMCA (New York)), but the one from the broadcast heard nationwide on LBS called by Gordon McLendon ("The Old Scotchman", and founder of LBS) (see the Wikipedia page for more about that).
The entire game was recorded by LBS. This excerpt begins with a brief introduction by an unidentified narrator, then McLendon takes over with Thomson coming to the plate, and Don Newcombe about to be relieved by Ralph Branca. After the fatal blow is struck and the call is made, Gordon lets the crowd noise take over. Later, underneath the pandemonium, you can hear him say "Well, I'll be a suck-egg mule".

LaurenceD SUBS 6th Nov 2018 | | 78 RPMHarry Raderman's Jazz Orchestra - La Veeda / Railroad Blues | I moved two 1920 Lyric releases from the Khoury's-related Lyric over to here, where they clearly belong. Maybe we should rename this label to something like Lyric [Lyraphone] ?
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Nov 2018 | | 78 RPMJimmie Lunceford - Margie / Like A Ship At Sea | Added labels for the original single release. 1938 sounds about right for this, but I believe that the "For Dancers Only" album (from which label 1633760 originated) was released sometime afterwards, around 1940 I think.
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Oct 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumDora Hall - [no title] | Front cover of my copy is stamped with "Teen Or Adult". Other copies exist stamped with "Adult Teen Pop".
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Oct 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Merry Christmas, Baby | Despite various other sites dating this release 1985, I'm setting it to 1974. Besides the dates on the labels, the look and feel of this pressing is very much 1970s, not 1980s. That, plus the "Also available on eight track tape" message on the back cover.
Looking around on the web however, it does appear that this album was in fact revived sometime around 1985. Perhaps those pressings have some distinguishing characteristics.
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Oct 2018 | | 78 RPMBillie Holiday - Strange Fruit / Fine And Mellow | Added alternate labels. The recording dates shown on these make me think that they are later pressings, perhaps from 1946 as mentioned in this Billboard ad.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Oct 2018 | | Classical ItemLondon Symphony Orchestra, Eduardo Mata - Carlos Chávez: The Complete Symphonies | I have given this entry the label name VoxBox, but would it be better grouped with Vox, with note: "Voxbox series"? In any case I think that VoxBox2 and VoxBox3 should be assigned to the same label as this one.
Also - I have entered tracks 1/2 and 2/6 as-is, with the apparent typographical errors.
LaurenceD SUBS 1st Oct 2018 | | Classical ItemSt. Louis Symphony Orchestra, André Previn - Copland: The Red Pony; Britten: Sinfonia Da Requiem | According to the liner notes, this is Previn's first recording as a conductor of symphonic music.
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Sep 2018 | | 78 RPMBoswell Sisters - Cheek To Cheek / Top Hat, White Tie And Tails | Personnel (from https://guymcafee.com/):
- Russ Case, Ed Wade - trumpets
- Will Bradley - trombone
- Artie Shaw - clarinet, alto saxophone
- Martha Boswell - piano
- Carl Kress - guitar
- Dick Cherwin - bass
- Stan King - drums
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Sep 2018 | | 78 RPMLalo Guerrero - No Me Vuelvo A Enamorar / Florecita | There was also a later release of "Florecita" by Guerrero, as "Don Edwards", on Imperial 4001 (b-side). A different recording, presumably with updated lyrics by Al Stewart.
Thanks to slholzer for mentioning the The Strachwitz Frontera Collection site, an excellent resource of info about Mexican & Mexican/American recordings.
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Sep 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Great Million Sellers Volume 1 | Individual tracks are either true stereo or simulated stereo.
I took the release date from bsnpubs, which seems plausible, as some of the tracks (e.g. Billy Mure) appeared as late as mid-1961.
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Sep 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumEsther Ofarim - Is It Really Me! | Note that the liner notes refer to the LP title as "Earthquake". That, along with the fact that the UK release does not contain the title track, makes me wonder if the track Is It Really Me was added late in the process.
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Sep 2018 | | Classical ItemI Solisti Di Milano, Angelo Ephrikian - Benedetto Marcello: Concerti A Cinque Opera I (1-6) | These recordings were originally issued ca. 1965, in double LP sets (along with concerti 7-12) on various labels (Das Alte Werke, Harmonia Mundi, Amadeo).
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Aug 2018 | | 78 RPMThe Four Clefs - Love Has Come My Way / You Should Be Satisfied | Thanks Bob.
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Aug 2018 | | 78 RPMThe Four Clefs - Love Has Come My Way / You Should Be Satisfied | Release date might be Jan 1945.
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumJoseph Gershenson Conducting The Universal-International Orchestra - This Earth Is Mine! | I know nothing about this film, but when I see that title I can't help but recall that Martin Mull song: "This land ain't your land, This land is my land, ..." etc.
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - General Electric Presents Go Fly A Kite | This "industrial musical" was staged Sept 19-21, 1966 (about one month before the Broadway opening of Cabaret).
This album consists of (mono) studio recordings, not the staged performance.
I must admit that these songs are quite engaging, although the lyrics are mostly corporate propaganda. My copy is clean, but the quality of the pressing is fair, with noisy defects here and there.
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumJudith Anderson - Medea | Here is the two-page ad listing the 30 LP releases scheduled for Sept 5, 1949: Billboard Aug 27, 1949, pp.18,19.
See also the article on p.15, same issue "MGM, Capitol And Mercury Join the Race"
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Aug 2018 | | Classical ItemVarious Artists - Mainly Mozart Festival 2001: Chamber Music Recital, June 13 2001 | I cannot be absolutely sure about the release date, but as I recall these recordings would become available for purchase online not too long after the performances took place.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumFoster Brooks - Foster Brooks "Sings" | Hm, I don't recall seeing this one on TV...
Anyway, does anyone know if this New Jersey CMS label is the same outfit as the New York label that we currently have?
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Aug 2018 | | CD AlbumDr. John - In A Sentimental Mood | Added alternate insert, inlay and disc scans. They differ from the Columbia House by the sections printed in a shade of gold. Also the Cat # is slightly different.
Images moved to 9 25889-2 (mod.edit.)
LaurenceD SUBS 24th Jul 2018 | | 78 RPMMcKinney's Cotton Pickers - Save It, Pretty Mamma / I Found A New Baby | Some interesting thoughts from Leonard Feather regarding Donald Redman here (see 'Myth 6', parts 1 & 2)
LaurenceD SUBS 21st Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumMilt Jackson - In A New Setting | I have included images from the first pressing which includes multi-page die-cut pages of liner notes and photos, hinged at the top, calendar-style.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumBuck Owens' Buckaroos - The Buckaroos Strike Again! | This is a Capitol Record Club pressing.
LaurenceD SUBS 17th Jul 2018 | | Classical ItemKipnis, Blegen, Luxon, Meints - The Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook | I have reproduced the track titles as shown in the insert/booklet, i.e. each track preceded by its page number in the Anna Magdalena notebook. I have also included composer names, some definite, some speculative (?).
I do enjoy the presentation and performances, the only drawback being that the original notes from the LP release were reproduced as-is, reduced in size for the CD insert. As a result a magnifying glass is required to read them.
LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Aynsley Dunbar Retaliation - To Mum, From Aynsley And The Boys | Cover credit: "John Moorshead", composer credits on labels: "Morshead"
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumGerry And The Pacemakers - Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying | Added scans for sleeve back and labels, both of which list track A5 as "Mabellene".
LaurenceD SUBS 1st Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Jumpin! With Pop Hits Of Tomorrow | An intriguing album, more so by the fact that you have to guess which artist is featured on which tracks. And some of those artist names look rather questionable.
Tracks a1,a2,b3,b5 seem to be in true stereo, the rest are rechanneled from what I can determine.
I have identified a couple of the performers. The recordings that I've located so far all seem to have a George Motola connection, for example:
- B5 "My Guy" is definitely The Carter Sisters, from Troy 1002. I'm guessing that A1 "Are You Thinking" is also from that single, but I would have to hear the single track to be 100% sure.
- B2 "Heavenly Angels" is The Viscaynes or 'Viscaines' from VPM 1006.
- A3 "You're My Only Love" is the same song as on Philles 101, but it's a different singer.
