LaurenceD SUBS 20th Oct 2015 | | 78 RPMGeorge E. Lee - If I Could Be With You / Paseo Street | I'm guessing it's George on the vocal for If I Could Be With You, but I'm not positive.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Oct 2015 | | 78 RPMSonny Thompson With The Sharps And Flats - Long Gone (Part I) / Long Gone (Part II) | The May 15 Billboard article describes the 'counterfeits' allegedly distributed by Millner thusly: "bogus copies of Long Gone carry an orangish-red background with smeary printing, while the legal copies carry clear printing in a deep maroon backing".
I would be interested in seeing one of these counterfeit pressings, if any are still around...

LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Oct 2015 | | 78 RPMBobby "Blue" Bland - Bobby's Blues / Teach Me (How To Love You) | Added variant A-side scan from a Monarch pressing, deltas are Δ20332 / Δ20332 (same on both sides). The B-side label is identical to that of image 669780.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Dooley Sisters - Ko Ko Mo / Heart Throb | Uncredited backing vocals on "Heart Throb" by The Jac-O-Lacs (Cornell Gunter, Pete Fox, Obie Jessie)
|
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Five Hollywood Blue Jays - So Worried / Cloudy And Raining | There was a later Hollywood Bluejays release (I Had A Love/Tell Me You Love Me on Recorded In Hollywood 396), but that was actually by the Debonairs, featuring Cornel Gunter. This seems to be a different group, personnel unknown. Apparently RIH owner John Dolphin just recycled the group name.
Release date estimated, could be early 1952.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 29th Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMStan Williams - Hair Of Gold / Come Back To Sorento | A bit frustrating trying to find information about this bandleader named Stan Williams. Perhaps he's the same one who led Stan Williams and his Blue Marines, a Canadian WWII-era band?
|
LaurenceD SUBS 29th Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMSkylarks - Dream Away / My Own True Love | These Skylarks do sound like the same ones who recorded "I Had The Craziest Dream" on RCA Victor (a white male/female mixed vocal group), so I grouped them together. I could find no information about this release, though. Probably 1948 or 1949.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 29th Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMLil Parker - You Call Everybody Darlin' / The Man I Love | I created a small bio for this Rex label, from what what I could dig up from Galen Gart's ARLD and Billboard.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 22nd Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMSonny Burke - What, Where And When / Mambo Jambo | "Mambo Jambo" was titled "Qué Rico El Mambo" on Perez Prado's original release.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMMoon Mullican - I'll Sail My Ship Alone / Moon's Tune | Added an alternate B-side scan. The A-side of my copy matches Tailspin’s image 742596.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMBertha "Chippie" Hill - Trouble In Mind / How Long Blues | It appears that these sides were included in a 2-disc Circle album, along with J-1004 (Careless Love/Charleston Blues). The discs might also have been sold separately, not sure.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMNew Orleans Rhythm Kings - (Oh Suzanna) Dust Off That Old Pianna / Since We Fell Out Of Love | A revival (of sorts) of the NORK by George Brunies, the only original member involved.
I found the lineup for these sessions on a 1974 LP "New Orleans Rhythm Kings 1934-1935":
- Muggsy Spanier, cornet
- George Brunies, trombone
- Eddie Miller, clarinet
- Terry Shand, piano
- Benny Pottle, bass
- Gene Krupa, drums

LaurenceD SUBS 2nd Aug 2015 | | CD SingleRicky Martin - La Copa De La Vida (La Cancion Oficial De La Copa Mundial, Francia '98) | Those images are from a release with a different catalog number (COL 665753 2).

LaurenceD SUBS 1st Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMAce Newell - Ovaltine / Dirty Gertie Glynn | Note to member Groovy: I changed the cat# to bring it in line with the other disc from this set. Also, I adjusted the release date from 1950 to 1942, as that is the date suggested by David J. Diehl on The BLUE PAGES.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 1st Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMAce Newell - She Tickled The Gentleman's Fancy / Is It True About Chinese Women? | This disc came paired with sides 8C/8D in a generic Party Records album cover. I have included scans of one of the albums; I have a couple of these covers, they're both the same.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Jul 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Original Recordings By The Artists Who Made These Hits! | Sorry about the tattered cover, feel free to submit better scans.
I'm not certain as to when this was released. The Billboard review suggests late 1964, so I went with that. And I would think that this LP was mainly intended to capitalize on the two Kingsmen releases (Louie Louie in 1963, Death of an Angel in 1964), but I wouldn't have thought that Flip was still pressing records at that late date.

LaurenceD SUBS 19th Jul 2015 | | MagazineNursing Standard | >> rustieneil : Alcohol Misuse, Combating Stress, Miscarriage, Managing Faecal Incontinence
Aside from the miscarriage, that could describe a normal day for me... :-P
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th Jul 2015 | | Cassette AlbumJimi Hendrix - Mr. Pitiful | The other side of the inlay is blank, so what you see here is everything. After poking around a bit, I agree that this should be a Swiss release, manufactured in Germany. Changed accordingly, thanks Nick.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 1st Jul 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Charleston Chasers - Farewell Blues / My Gal Sal | Charleston Chasers was a pseudonym used by various outfits. This grouping consisted of:
Red Nichols, trumpet, dir
Miff Mole, trombone
Jimmy Dorsey, clarinet, alto sax
Arthur Schutt, piano, arr
Dick McDonough, banjo, guitar
Vic Berton, drums
Joe Tarto, tuba

LaurenceD SUBS 20th Jun 2015 | | Reel-to-ReelJohnny Cash - Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison | Apologies, the liner notes are printed inside the box, and cannot be scanned. If I can set up some proper lighting, I'll attempt to photograph them.
I estimated the date at 1970. This release first appeared in the 7 1/2 IPS format as CQ 1005 in the latter half of 1968. I believe that Columbia started releasing the HC (3 3/4 IPS) format sometime in 1969, but I'm not sure.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jun 2015 | | 78 RPMTennessee Ernie And Joe "Fingers" Carr - Tailor Made Woman / Bright Lights And Blonde Haired Women | Sorry, I have no idea why this hybrid release was assembled.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jun 2015 | | 78 RPMJulius Chabala - Chusi Mamma / Seni | I found some references to Julius Chabala in Los Angeles periodicals (The Daily Trojan, California Eagle) ranging from 1955-1957. He was from North Rhodesia, and performed African folk songs at various colleges.
The Santa Monica City College Corsair (Feb 1957) states that he was a pre-med student at SMCC, also that he played drums and sang, and mentioned two of the songs on this disc.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jun 2015 | | 78 RPMArthur Prysock - I'll Always Be With You / All Of Me | I was not able to quite pin down the year for this; but based on neighboring Signature issues, it's probably from 1949 or 1950.
In Oct 1946, Arthur Prysock released four sides on the Haven label:
- Haven 3000: Makin' A Fool Out Of Me / I'll Always Be With You **
- Haven 3002: New Jelly Blues / All Of Me
They seem to be rather scarce. It appears that those four sides eventually turned up on Signature -- on this entry along with:
- Signature 32014: Makin' A Fool Out Of Me / Jelly Jelly *
* not sure about the exact titles on the labels, could not find a copy to confirm.
** corrected title, thanks to wcs270

LaurenceD SUBS 30th May 2015 | | 78 RPMBob Atcher - Mountain Maw / Signed, Sealed And Delivered | That's a lot of releases for one week!
|
LaurenceD SUBS 30th May 2015 | | 78 RPMKen Griffin - Put Your Arms Around Me Honey / Margie | The A-side co-composer would be correctly spelled Albert Von Tilzer.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 30th May 2015 | | 78 RPMBob Atcher - Mountain Maw / Signed, Sealed And Delivered | Could not find a BB listing for this cat#, but neighboring releases suggest mid-1948. Oddly, there's an ad (Jun 19, 1948, p.62) which lists this pairing under "latest releases" but with the old 37991 number.
Which reminds me, does someone here know when the 20000 country series made its debut?
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th May 2015 | | 78 RPMBabs Gonzales - The Be-Bop Santa Claus / Manhattan Fable | These sides were leased to Essex for nationwide release as #377.
"Be-Bop Santa Claus" was later sold to King and released as #4836, b/w "Watch Them Resolutions".
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th May 2015 | | 78 RPMFour Blazes - Please Send Her Back To Me / Stop Boogie Woogie | The matrix number (1025) shown on the A-side label is incorrect. The runout has the correct number: URC-1125
