LaurenceD SUBS 17th May 2015 | | 78 RPMLittle David - Macayo / Cryin' Blues | Thanks for that info, hiphop. I've corrected the error in my original comment, had my RPM #s mixed up.
LaurenceD SUBS 16th May 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Dave Brubeck Trio - Singing In The Rain / I'll Remember April | It appears that the logo for the new Fantasy label was 'borrowed' from the cover of a science fiction magazine. See this page for more information. There was apparently a complaint, because following one more single release the Fantasy logo was revised.
LaurenceD SUBS 16th May 2015 | | 78 RPMDave Brubeck Trio - Laura / Indiana | Dave's first record release. Note the misspelling of co-composer David Raksin as Raskin.
LaurenceD SUBS 16th May 2015 | | Reel-to-ReelThe Supremes - The Supremes A' Go-Go | The version of You Can't Hurry Love on this tape is a little different from the LP version. After the first chorus, there is an extra bit where Diana sings "I've Been Waitin' ... I've Been Takin' ...". Otherwise it sounds the same, so I suspect that the extra part was edited out of the final mix. If someone has an 8-track copy, I would be curious as to which version is on there.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumHomer And Jethro - The Far-Out World Of Homer And Jethro | I think that this was the final Homer and Jethro release on RCA Victor. Henry D. "Homer" Haynes had passed away on Aug 7, 1971. Jethro gives a nice summary of their career in the liner notes.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumHomer And Jethro - Any News From Nashville? | I just noticed that on every one of these Jack Davis covers, for whatever reason, H&J's eyeballs are painted red.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumHomer And Jethro - Homer And Jethro Go West | I'm unsure about the release date of this one - the cat# (and praguefrank) suggest around March-May 1963, but the earliest mention of it that I can find is March 1964 (Billboard).
LaurenceD SUBS 5th May 2015 | | 78 RPMNorman Granz' Jazz At The Philharmonic - How High The Moon Part 1 / How High The Moon Part 2 | Sadly, the Syria Mosque was torn down in August 1991 to make way for a parking lot.
LaurenceD SUBS 5th May 2015 | | Reel-to-ReelLed Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II | There are some copies of this release which have a subtitle on the box spine: "The Only Way To Fly".
LaurenceD SUBS 2nd May 2015 | | Reel-to-ReelJoao Gilberto - The Boss Of The Bossa Nova | In the attempt to include the tilde in João's name, the typesetters used what looks more like a macron.
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Apr 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Jacks - Smack Dab In The Middle / Why Don't You Write Me? | One of those situations where the designated B side took off unexpectedly.
(I linked The Jacks and The Cadets together. Maybe it should be "see also", but they are the same group)
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Apr 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Watchmen - The Gorgeous Gruen / Preachin' Blues | I don't know what B&W's '300' series was intended to be, maybe for novelty items. Number 301 is a Jan Garber release; beyond that I'm not aware of others in that series.
"Preachin' Blues" is actually a reissue of the A-side of B&W #11, originally credited to the Ray Stokes Trio.
As for "The Gorgeous Gruen", it's a rather suggestive song about a guy who likes to bestow gift watches upon his lady friends. And it sounds like that's not all he's giving them...

LaurenceD SUBS 7th Apr 2015 | | 78 RPMPinetop And Lindberg - East Chicago Blues / Farish Street Jive | Pinetop and Lindberg (The Sparks Brothers) discography.
Little Brother (Montgomery) discography.
LaurenceD SUBS 29th Mar 2015 | | CD AlbumThe Birds - The Collectors' Guide To Rare British Birds | That's All I Need is actually 'hidden' on track 18, following Granny Rides Again. It's listed in the booklet as 19, though.
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Mar 2015 | | CD AlbumYardbirds - Cumular Limit | Disc 1 track 14 has a total running time of 25:42, consisting of:
- Dazed And Confused (~ 5:32)
- (silence) (~ 10:03)
- De Lane Lea Lee (~ 10:07)
Disc 2 contains:
- one video file from a German TV appearance, running approx. 16:00, which I listed as tracks 1-4 (Disc 1 tracks 2-5 contain the audio from the same show, minus some spoken bits).
- one audio track, a radio interview at WOR-FM New York featuring the four band members, running approx. 21:42, which I listed as track 5.

LaurenceD SUBS 26th Feb 2015 | | 78 RPMSlim Gaillard And His Flat-Foot-Floogee Boys - A-Well-A-Take-'Em-A-Joe (Crap Shooter's Jive) / Chicken Rhythm | Looks good fixbutte, and I see where I erred on the recording date. While browsing the sessionography, by mistake I grabbed the date from the session that followed the Sept 15 one.
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Feb 2015 | | 78 RPMSeger Ellis - When It's Sleepy Time Down South / No Jug, No Jazz | Not sure what happened, but it looks as if someone spilled cleaning fluid on one of the labels.
LaurenceD SUBS 20th Feb 2015 | | Reel-to-ReelThe Dells - Stay In My Corner | Same contents as the It's Not Unusual LP, with a new title.
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Feb 2015 | | CD AlbumGary U.S. Bonds - Greatest Hits | The testimonials on the insert have to be read to be believed -- or disbelieved ;-)
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Feb 2015 | | 78 RPMKing Cole Trio - I'm Lost / Pitchin' Up A Boogie | I moved the release date back to 1944 on this one. Excelsior's usage of different cat numbers for each side seems to have confused the folks at Billboard. Their Oct 21 1944 listing mistakenly assigned Capitol 165 to this release, but that was Benny Carter's version of I'm Lost. Then the Nov 4 listing used the (incorrect) matrix number 2986.
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMSarah Vaughan - The Lord's Prayer / Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child | This is a reissue of Musicraft 525. I suspect that it was resurrected to compete with Perry Como's version of The Lord's Prayer.
MGM acquired the catalog of the defunct Musicraft label around August 1949.
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Jan 2015 | | Cassette AlbumVarious Artists - Roots Of Rock | The track listings on the cassette itself match the actual playing order. The listings on the insert do not, maybe because they came from the 8-track release; Only reason I can think of why "Drinking Wine" would be shown as split across two tracks.
LaurenceD SUBS 30th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMRed Ingle And The Natural Seven - Temptation (Tim-Tayshun) / (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons (I Love You) For Seventy Mental Reasons | Added alt labels; B-side title has "Fer Seventy Mental Reasons"
LaurenceD SUBS 29th Dec 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumVic Lewis And His Orchestra - Donovan My Way | Released the same week as the Hurdy Gurdy Man LP (BN 26420).
I suspect that mono promo versions may exist for this release, but I have yet to see one.
LaurenceD SUBS 29th Dec 2014 | | CD AlbumFrederick Fennell - Fennell Conducts Sousa | My copy is the BMG Direct Marketing version, D 154637. There is an error on the rear inlay, it lists "Golden Jubilee" for tracks 14 and 15.
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Dec 2014 | | Vinyl AlbumBuddy Meredith - Sing Me A Heart Song | I believe that this was a mono-only release.
Buddy was also a DJ at KRSD, Rapid City, South Dakota.
LaurenceD SUBS 27th Dec 2014 | | Classical ItemProfessor Peter Schickele - P.D.Q. Bach On The Air | I wasn't sure whether this one belonged in the classical department, but here it is ...
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMGlen Hurlburt - Cable Car Concerto / Rhapsody Of Fisherman's Wharf | These green label scans are a pretty accurate representation of my copy (maybe a bit dark), and I've run across another one that is about the same. Never seen a bluish one, but it could exist; subsequent pressings may have been produced at a different source.
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMJudy Garland - That Old Black Magic / Poor Little Rich Girl | Added cleaner labels, with acknowledgement to ChaZarad.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMAudrey Marsh - D-U-Z Does Everything | Audrey Marsh would sing the DUZ detergent jingle for broadcasts of the soap opera The Road Of Life. I think that this would have been for the radio version of the program.
