LaurenceD SUBS 27th May 2023		Vinyl Album The Greenwood County Singers - The First Recordings By The Joyful Greenwood County Singers	I always figured that these trade mag scribes would often not take the time to listen to an entire LP before posting a review. I reckon that this one (see Cash Box snippet) barely even looked at the cover, based on those 'song titles'.

LaurenceD SUBS 23rd May 2023		Classical Item The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Edo De Waart - Mozart: Divertimenti	This LP was released with two different covers, one with notes in English (my copy), and one with notes in German (as seen here). K.A.226 & 227 have been regarded as being of doubtful origin, as the original manuscripts are lost. I believe that most scholars regard them as most likely composed by Mozart, however. Alfred Einstein suggests that Mozart may have composed these while in Munich, around the time of La Finta giardiniera (K.196, ca. 1775).

Harris: "One puzzling detail about this issue: The jacket shows, without any identification, Lucille Grahn and Jules Perrot in a scene from the latter's ballet Catarina, produced in London in 1846, with music by Cesare Pugni. To my knowledge, the only thing it has in common with Marco Spada is that both ballets feature a bandit."

LaurenceD SUBS 30th Apr 2023		Vinyl Album Various Artists - The Glory Of Their Times	As I understand it, Larry Ritter had these albums pressed (1000 or so) and sold them by mail for $3.95. Some copies of his book contained a card with a mail-in offer. I don't have a release date, but: - the cover states that the tapes had been given to the BBHOF - and the BBHOF archives indicate: "The collection was donated to the Museum by Ritter in late 1968" ... so the LP was most likely available by 1969 or sometime thereafter.

The Cash Box April 26 issue indicates that they arranged a gig at the Starwood in Los Angeles featuring Bates Motel, Single Bullet Theory and The Willys, as well as dates in New York and San Francisco for other bands on this release.
LaurenceD SUBS 11th Apr 2023		Vinyl Album Chuck Berry - Afterschool Session	Added scans for an alternate cover { 3262560, 3262561 } which I suppose is from a later pressing. The labels on this copy are the same as those from make1968 { 689393, 689394 }. Funny thing about my pressing... found it in a secondhand shop, brought it home and played it. Side one sounded fine, then I turned it over and played side two. Expecting to hear "Brown Eyed Handsome Man", I instead heard a harmonica instrumental. It became apparent that I was listening to side two of The Best of Little Walter! Looking at the runouts confirmed it: Side one shows CHESS-8448 as expected. Side two, which should show CHESS-8449, instead has 8649 Δ501 ... Anyone else ever seen a mistake like that?

LaurenceD SUBS 7th Apr 2023		78 RPM Boyd Raeburn - Innovations	Also in the Aug 28 Down Beat issue: article p.6 Raeburn Split As Handy And Stars Walk Out: Raeburn’s Boyd Cage is again buzzing with unrest, with several key men already out of the band and more ready to leave. Not rumor but fact this time was the departure of George Handy. Also out were Ray Linn, trumpet; Jackie Mills, drums; Dodo Marmarosa, piano; Harry Babasin, bass; and singer David Allyn. Said Raeburn: “Some left to take better jobs, some because I didn’t like the way they played. Some wanted to tell me how I should run the band. They forget that no musician is so important that he can’t be replaced.” Internal dissension isn't new to the Raeburn band. His first outfit, which came out of Chicago, busted wide open because of two strong factions within the band. Later Johnny Bothwell, his star sideman, walked out with loud repercussions. Handy, who has tangled with Boyd before, was thoroughly disgusted with everything connected with the band, including some of the leader’s managerial associates. ...
