laviolet 21st Jul 2016 | | CD AlbumAaron Neville - Apache | ReviewJust when it seemed that Aaron Neville had settled into doing oldies and standards, along comes Apache, his most personal record, which he appropriately describes as "just me." Indeed, all his influences are here: funk, soul, doo-wop, his New Orleans roots and often troubled youth. Neville is in fine voice at 75 and the backng, including the Daptone horn section, is superb. Neville co-wrote nearly all the songs and the lyrics are poignant and powerful.
The title comes from his boyhood nickname, drawn from his Native American ancestry and tendency in younger days to turn red in the sun. His songs are published by his company "Apache Red Music." Very highly recommended.

laviolet 11th Jul 2016 | | 78 RPMJody Leviens And His Boys - Mardi Gras Mambo / I'm Tired Of Crying | This is the original version of the song that became a Carnival staple when recorded in 1955 by the Hawketts, led by 17-year-old Art Neville. As you'll hear, this record is quite the mixed musical bag: Latin beat, country vocal, R&B sax.

laviolet 11th Jul 2016 | | 78 RPMThe Hawketts - Mardi Gras Mambo / Your Time's Up | All label variants of the 45 RPM release show "Mardi Gras Mambo" as 7780 and "Your Time's Up" as 7781. The runout of my copy (1975 pressing) agrees with the label, so apparently it's the 78 label that's in error.
The March 5, 1955 issue of Billboard listed "Mardi Gras Mambo" as the third-best selling R&B record in New Orleans for the survey week ending February 23 (the day after Fat Tuesday that year).

laviolet 20th May 2016 | | DVDThe Big Beat: Fats Domino And The Birth Of Rock N' Roll - Shanachie | Rated 10/10Fats Domino's contributions to the birth of rock and roll have been long underrated. A reclusive personality, Domino seldom gave interviews and preferred to let his music speak for itself. Fortunately, we now have Joe Lauro's documentary and Rick Coleman's biography to document the life and career of this seminal artist. We get most of the usual biographical trappings: Fats' early life and influences, television and movie clips, interviews with friends and collaborators, but no face-to-face interview with Domino himself. That gap is mostly filled by audio excerpts from interviews with Coleman done for the book, although the lack of captions and Domino's thick Creole accent often make him difficult to understand. The musical highlights come from a recently discovered 44-minute film of Domino's performance at the 1962 Festival de Jazz d'Antibes, which includes solos from Dave Bartholomew and most of the band. The disc includes the 87-minute director's cut, the edited version broadcast on US PBS, and clips from the French film as extras. Not only highly recommended, but essential. By the way, this disc was released the same day as the premiere broadcast on Domino's 88th birthday.

laviolet 24th Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMProfessor Longhair - Tipitina / In The Night | Billboard review, February 20, 1954:
"In the Night": The pleasures in store for the adventurous after midnight are enticingly outlined by the professor. Best feature of the slicing, tho, is the hypnotic beat that's insistently pounded across by the [?]. Good for the boxes.
"Tipitina": Interesting blues gets a convincing reading.

laviolet 22nd Apr 2016 | | 78 RPMProfessor Longhair And His New Orleans Boys - Walk Your Blues Away / Prof. Longhair's Blues | From Billboard, May 20, 1950:
"Professor Longhair's Blues": Slow drag blues features compelling combo beat and throaty, intense blues warbling.
[YouTube Video]
"Walk Your Blues Away": A captivating Southern boogie beat sparks a driving medium novelty blues with an effective lyric and tag, expressively chanted.

laviolet 26th Mar 2016 | | 78 RPMFats Domino - Mardi Gras In New Orleans / Going To The River | "D. Longhair" is Roy Byrd, Professor Longhair. Byrd used Domino's opening on his 1959 recording for Ron Records, which became the definitive version. By the way, that record was produced by Mac "Dr. John" Rebennack.

laviolet 20th Mar 2016 | | 78 RPMProfessor Longhair And His New Orleans Boys - Mardi Gras In New Orleans / She Walks Right In | Recorded November 1949 in New Orleans; produced by Ahmet Ertugun and Herb Abramson.
Billboard, February 11, 1950, "Record Reviews," p. 97:
"She Walks Right In": Hypnotic, medium tempo boogie blues swings a storm. "Vocal," the title phrase repeated over and over, has curiously compelling effect. Group has distinctive sound.
"Mardi Gras in New Orleans": Wonderfully spirited side with a strange three-beat rhythm should be great in Delta territory, and could catch in other locales.

laviolet 10th Dec 2015 | | CD AlbumThe Neville Brothers - Treacherous: A History Of The Neville Brothers, 1955-1985 | ReviewEven before the Neville Brothers finally broke through with Yellow Moon in 1989, Rhino assembled a nice cross-section of Art's and Aaron's recordings from the 1950's, 60's and 70's, added to studio and live tracks from the brothers. We also get two tracks from the Wild Tchoupitoulas album, the first project on which all four brothers worked. Another nice touch is the original single version of "Hercules" (almost every other compilation has a different mix). The final four tracks are live, capturing the brothers' dynamic stage performance. Inexplicably, the best-known recording associated with any Neville, Aaron's 1966 hit "Tell It Like It Is," is missing, though it appears on the LP version. Recommended.

laviolet 10th Dec 2015 | | CD AlbumThe Neville Brothers - Treacherous Too! A History Of The Neville Brothers, Volume Two 1955-1987 | ReviewThe second volume of Rhino's Nevilles compilations follows the same format as the first: selections by Art and Aaron from the 1950's through 1970's, followed by studio and live Neville Brothers tracks. This collection includes tracks which don't show up much on digital, such as the B-side of the Hawketts' only record, the same from Cyril's only 45, and three of Art's tracks from the Instant labels. On the downside, Cyril's "Tell Me What's On Your Mind" has little dynamic range and we get three tracks from 1987's dispensable Uptown album. If you're looking to fill some holes in your Nevilles collection, this is worth your while.
Update: The Cyril Neville track listed as "Tell Me What's on Your Mind" appears to be a different, unknown song. Here's the correct track.

laviolet 28th Oct 2015 | | CD AlbumPetula Clark - Blue Lady: The Nashville Sessions | Tracks 11-13 were released on ABC-Dunhill singles in 1974 with production by Phil Gernhard and Tony Scotti. The rest, produced by Chips Moman, were planned for the cancelled album Blue Lady. The LP had been assigned catalog number ABCD 949 and scheduled for a mid-1976 release.

laviolet 19th Sep 2015 | | CD AlbumAllen Toussaint - The Lost Sessions | I don't have this CD, but "Hercules" and "Fairchild" are likely not the originally released versions. The original single mix of "Fairchild" has never been reissued, while the original 45 mix of "Hercules" is found only on the compiliations Aaron Neville Gold and Treacherous. All other compilations, to my knowledge, contain an alternate mix.

laviolet 6th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMFats Domino - Blueberry Hill / Honey Chile | The repair was probably done by Imperial engineer Abraham "Bunny" Robyn, who had pieced together "Blueberry Hill" from a troubled session at Hollywood Master Recorders on June 27, 1956. The band managed a complete take only on "Honey Chile"; afterward bandleader Dave Bartholomew dejectedly dropped the tape on label boss Lew Chudd's desk. Imperial initially pushed "Honey Chile," but Bartholomew was later shocked to learn that not only was "Blueberry Hill" released, it became Domino's biggest hit. Robyn also mastered Domino's singles slightly sped up, which made Domino sound younger and the music difficult to copy. See Rick Coleman's definitive Domino bio for more.

laviolet 5th Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMSugar Boy And His Cane Cutters - Jock-A-Mo / You, You, You | Mardi Gras fell on March 2 in 1954, so presumably the record was already out by the time the review appeared in the Billboard issue dated March 6. "You, You, You" is now registered to Crawford, but he wasn't credited on the original label. Crawford's next Checker release was his third and last, but he left behind enough tracks, including "Night Rider," to fill a 1976 Chess compilation.

laviolet 1st Sep 2015 | | 78 RPMFats Domino - Detroit City Blues / The Fat Man | Yes, "The Fat Man" is far from high fidelity, but unfortunately it's in the grooves. Here's Rick Coleman's description of the six-hour session of December 10, 1949: "Domino hammered the piano and shouted his theme song ... Crammed next to the baby grand were drummer Earl Palmer, bassist Frank Fields, and guitarist Ernest McLean. The rhythm section strained to be heard over the shattering din of the piano. A lathe-like turntable plowed wax ... engraving the distorted sound for posterity. ... In the small studio with no baffles between the musicians, a good sound mix was difficult to attain." Imperial boss Lew Chudd wanted to re-record the song, but acetates were already being played on radio. "Detroit City Blues," a more conventional song, was probably easier to record. By the way, the book is excellent.
