Orbiting Cat 17th Mar 2024 | | Vinyl AlbumSimon Vinkenoog, Julian Beck - Dialectics Of Liberation Volume 19 | Ive put 1967 but might have been issued in 1968. There were 23 records issued in total, and were available by mail order. Some details [here]

Orbiting Cat 14th Nov 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumGeorge Wallington Quintet - Jazz For The Carriage Trade | Added 1st press label scans I think. My sleeve has writing on it so I won't scan that.
|
Orbiting Cat 14th Nov 2023 | | 78 RPMBilly Haley And His Comets - (We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock / Thirteen Women | Swedish version of the classic (I presume because it was found in Sweden). Artist credited as Billy Haley. I haven't added many 78s, so mods please make any corrections that are needed.
|
Orbiting Cat 14th Nov 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThelonious Monk - Monk | Added the 1st issue of this record. Not in great condition but it will surely do until a better one is added. Later pressings had a different sleeve. My copy of this is borderline VG but it plays GREAT. My early US jazz records all seem to play well no matter the condition, they knew how to do a quality pressing.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicGov't Mule @ O2 Ritz Manchester | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
I went to this gig last night and the musicianship was excellent by all parties but... I do think that Warren Haynes seems to me to be doing what Gary Moore did in the '80s - he is starting to play the guitar hero on every track. I also noticed that there seems to be a trend in the music of false ends. They frequently built to a crescendo, with bass lines that signalled a conclusion only for them to continue.
Apart from that, a good show.
PS. One thing that amused me no end was that I stood next to the sound and lighting engineers and could see them at work. I do like to see the back of house stuff so did watch quite a bit of what they did. I have to say, the sound engineer seemed to spend more time looking at Facebook and sending emails that twiddling with the sound. Looks like he got it nailed down at the sound check!

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicDarkside @ Galeri | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
I went to see this Pink Floyd tribute band and boy, were they good. I only found out by accident that they were doing 2 shows, one on the Friday and one on Saturday but that they would do the whole of Dsark Side Of The Moon album on the Friday and Animals on the Saturday. Had I known, I would probably have gone to both shows.
What can I say? Despite some problems with one pedal which prevented them from doing one song, they were all excellent. The Drummer really knocked all kinds of shit out of the skins, but he was excellent. As were all the others. They had a female who provided backing vocals on many tracks as well as an excellent lead vocal on The Great Gig In the Sky.
I would definitely go see them again.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicThe Bohemians [Queen Tribute] @ The Brindley | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
Our first time seeing this Queen Tribute Act. I don't know whether it was an off night but Rob Comber as Freddie wasn't on particularly good form. His movements around the stage seemed forced and his voice was pitchy all night. He struggled with many of the vocals proving just how difficult Queen songs are to emulate. Christopher Gregory as Brian May was reasonable although he did insist on putting his own take on the solos. They didn't seem to get the point that people go to a tribute show to hear the music recreated and not re-interpreted, as Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) said to Xander Cummins (Nick Catanese) in the movie Rock Star. "You gotta play it exactly like the record".
Having said all that, the moment I dreaded all night came along when 'Freddie' announced the next song was to be Bohemian Rhapsody. Frankly, it was their best effort all night. They even managed to sing the operatic section live - with some help from a backing track but hey, Queen overdubbed that section to hell and back!
Overall a pretty good show although there were times when they sounded dolefully out of tune.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicSteve Harley Acoustic Band @ The Brindley | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
A very good set, Steve performed many of the tracks from his 'new' album 'Uncovered' which he said he record in 2019 and was set to tour when the pandemic struck, so this is effectively, that tour.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicIllegal Eagles @ Parr Hall | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
An excellent gig, they performed really well; my only grouse being they did Hotel California as their one and only song as an encore, however it was probably the worst rendition they did all night.
Having said that, it was still very good, just not as good as their other covers.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicEddi Reader @ The Brindley | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
Eddi was really good - amusing stories and her voice seemed as good as ever, even though she's now in her 60s (63 at time of the gig). Her show seems a little chaotic in that she doesn't seem to have a defined set list, seemingly picking the next song from a list she has to hand. Only oddity was, she did her gig and then went off. No encore. I do appreciate that an encore is now something that happens at (until this gig) every gig, so it was good to see that she sang her songs, in the order she wanted and then when she came to the end, she left.
Excellent gig.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicThe Manfreds @ The Brindley | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
Sorry, but they are now too old. Paul Jones voice seemed OK at first but then he started hitting some really bum notes. Most songs lacked any energy and it was like they were playing at a funeral. From now on, I won't be attending any acts that had their heyday in the 60s and soon probably the 7-s as well.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicJustin Hayward @ Floral Pavilion | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
A very good gig - Mike opened the show as a solo artist then when Justin came on, was Justin's accompanying guitar.
An acoustic set and given his age, Justin's voice was very good, struggling a little on some of the higher tones.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicThe Sounds Of Simon @ The Brindley | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
What a great gig this was. They are really excellent, and I would recommend anyone who likes Simon & Garfunkel to go along.
The play lots of S&Gs 60s music (obviously as that's when they were together) which demonstrates Simon's progression as both a songwriter and guitarist. Superb.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicUK Pink Floyd Experience @ Theatre Royal | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
Great gig - two notable things. Firstly the lead guitar/singer has had a bad throat for a few weeks so his voice was straining - this didn't detract from a great gig though. Secondly, their usual sax player isn't well so a late stand in was found and she was so good, I only discovered she was a stand in when at the end of the gig they thanked her letting us know she had been with them for only a few shows.
Highly recommended you see this band if you are a Floyd fan.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicKT Tunstall @ Barbican Centre | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
Attended this gig which was excellent. Supported by Andy Burrows on Drums (Razorlight) and Seye Adelekan (Gorillaz) on Bass. Stuart Wilkinson played occasional lead guitar (i.e. on a few songs only).
Andy wa the support act along with Stuart on guitar. Andy's playing guitar was excellent, nothing fancy but a lovely tone and chord structure. Unfortunately, I think he has to work on his lyrics more!
KT was brilliant and Andy knocked seven bells out of his kit which reallly added to KT's songs and arrangement.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicThe Story Of Guitar Heroes @ Theatre Royal | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
Not a bad gig and entertaining enough. I have a few crticisms though. One is the venue itself. The seating is now showing its age. Cramped and uncomfortable. As for the show itself and the band... My main two points are that this is billed as a Jukebox type of show which is, they play songs from 60s through the 80s featuring the guitar work of our heroes. I found that the band themselves did start playing the songs as we remember them but then started interjecting their own 'inerpretations' of the lead breaks - prime example was on Comfortably Numb. Who can better Dave Gilmore's classic lead breaks? Certainly not this band who decided to go off script with it. Similarly the vocals were not great. I didn't expect them to sound like the bands in terms of vocal, but did in terms of guitar work which was not quite up to scratch. Some lovely and iconic guitars on show though!

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicHue And Cry @ The Atkinson | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
Excellent gig, just the two Kane Brothers with no other accompaniment. Pat's voice is as smooth as it ever was.

Orbiting Cat 18th Oct 2023 | | Live MusicPink Floydian @ The Brindley | (Comment by submitter Helbic copied from notes):
No support act, they were on for around 2.5 hours.
Excellent gig, my first time seeing this Floyd tribute band who I would put up there with the best tribute acts going. Light show was really good too!

Orbiting Cat 23rd Aug 2023 | | Cassette AlbumFleetwood Mac - Rumours | When designing the website we tried to "keep things simple". There are lots of grey areas and it can be complicated to designate an item as one type or the other. For instance on 45cat we have a single "Bootleg / Repro" category.

Orbiting Cat 23rd Dec 2022 | | CD AlbumThe Beatles - The Radio Vaults | I'd say an unofficial release is one that is legal to to sell, but created without the permission of the artist/label. Whereas a bootleg is usually infringing on copyright law and is not legal to sell.
