PhilMH SUBS 27th Feb 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Plastic Ono Band - Live Peace In Toronto 1969 | New Zealand issue in Discogs shows 1970 on the labels.
PhilMH SUBS 27th Feb 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Plastic Ono Band - Live Peace In Toronto 1969 | Several of the entries in Discogs, from different countries, replicated the December 1969 release date (which I think might have been the original US date), even though the labels show (P) 1970 - I have now corrected those, and queried the date on an Australian pressing which doesn't show the years. As this also shows the (P) 1970, then the release date couldn't have been 1969. And I see a few suspect 1969 issues linked below!
PhilMH SUBS 25th Feb 2023 | | Classical ItemRoyal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sir Thomas Beecham - Gounod | Hi Greg, the recording was originally made in 1949, but the RCA matrices starting with E suggest that this was mastered in 1954, so probably released that year as well.
PhilMH SUBS 25th Feb 2023 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Beethoven: Complete Overtures / Minuets, German Dances, Contredanses | As this was distributed under licence from Universal Classics Group, then the release year must be 1999 or later; the 1993/1994 date would apply to the original release with set number 438 706-2, distributed by PolyGram.
PhilMH SUBS 25th Feb 2023 | | CD AlbumMiles Davis - Kind Of Blue | Found release date in Platterlog.
PhilMH SUBS 23rd Feb 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Tarney / Spencer Band - Run For Your Life | Barcodes did exist on records in 1979, and I think A&M Records was one of the first companies to have them, along with the CBS group of labels; I used to have Joan Armatrading's HOW CRUEL ep from 1979, and that had a barcode. In any case, 1979 could still be used for the first release date here even if first pressings with the same catalogue number didn't have a barcode - unlike Discogs, we don't create separate entries for different pressings of the same catalogue number.
PhilMH SUBS 21st Feb 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumJethro Tull - Minstrel In The Gallery | Discogs has US pressings from Santa Maria and Terre Haute which are noted to have upside down back covers, and I seem to remember that my long-gone copy was upside down too, something that I had forgotten about until I saw this entry!
PhilMH SUBS 17th Feb 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumJethro Tull - Aqualung | Previous and later Australian Tull albums on Reprise (Kinney/WEA) and Chrysalis (Festival) also showed the publisher as Essex, so I suspect that the Rondor credit was a mistake (probably a temporary brain fade by whoever at Kinney prepared the label copy), and probably on the first pressing; the album peaked at #3 on the album chart (which it entered in July 1971), so it is likely that a second pressing with the correct Essex credit was made later that year.
PhilMH SUBS 2nd Feb 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Easybeats - Holding On | Not a 1969 release, that's just the copyright year. Polydor and Phonogram didn't introduce their 7-digit catalogue numbers until April 1970, so this release (probably a budget reissue as it's on Karussell) can't be any earlier than that (and Discogs has this as 1970, FWIW).
PhilMH SUBS 22nd Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumLove Unlimited - From A Girl's Point Of View We Give To You... Love Unlimited | Ok then, I suspect that Phonogram passed their surplus pressings onto Bovema when the latter took over the MCA licence, though that sort of thing usually happens with complete packages (e.g. EMI UK selling surplus Motown albums - covers and records - on to RCA in late 1981). Mind you, MCA US had surplus records without covers, and surplus covers without records, when they took over ABC in 1979, as can be seen on many of the subsequent reissues that combined ABC pressings with MCA covers, or ABC covers with MCA pressings, so ABC's management of their manufacturing processes must have been really up the spout!
PhilMH SUBS 22nd Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumLove Unlimited - From A Girl's Point Of View We Give To You... Love Unlimited | Leonard, did you buy this new or used? The MCA issue at Discogs doesn't have a Uni cover, so I wonder whether this is one of those situations where a used record shop swapped out a damaged record or cover. Note that the original Uni issue came through Phonogram, and the MCA reissue through Bovema/EMI (and the latter would most probably have been in 1974, coinciding with MCA going to EMI in the UK).
PhilMH SUBS 20th Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumThe London Symphony Orchestra, John Williams - Star Wars | Not a 1977 release, that was on 20th Century Records; the 8nn nnn-n style of catalogue number was adopted by PolyGram in 1983, so this reissue is from that year at the earliest.
Mod Edit: Fixed.
PhilMH SUBS 20th Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumBlues Magoos - Electric Comic Book | Now this one looks a bit odd - an alphanumeric catalogue number for a Mercury/PolyGram release in 1998, when PolyGram had been using all numeric numbers since 1970? Google doesn't bring up anything else for this album with this catalogue number, so is it a legit release? Images might help!
PhilMH SUBS 20th Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumBlues Magoos - Gulf Coast Bound | Michael de Looper's Australian EMI albums listing has this as 1971, which I think is quite likely, as numerically it comes after known 1971 releases like the Mamas & Papas' PEOPLE LIKE US and B.B. KING IN LONDON (both of which Michael has as 1972, so that is also possible for this one). Even though the Probe label was launched internationally in the second half of 1970, Australia does not seem to have started using the label until 1971.
PhilMH SUBS 18th Jan 2023 | | CD AlbumJoni Mitchell - Shine | Australian issue, actually made in Australia, has the same barcode, but catalogue number is shortened to 7230457. Chances are that the EU pressing was distributed outside of Europe, though (e.g. Middle East & North Africa, the rest of Africa, Malaysia/Singapore/Hong Kong, etc.), but difficult to confirm or deny unless somebody from one of those territories sticks their head in here!
PhilMH SUBS 16th Jan 2023 | | CD AlbumPercy Mayfield - Poet Of The Blues | Not a 1990 release because this shows the company name Fantasy, Inc., who didn't acquire Specialty until 1991; the original 1990 issue pre-Fantasy had a different barcode (Fantasy barcodes started with 0208) and is linked below. A comment in the submission history at Discogs suggests that this CRC copy was issued in 1997.
[Thanks for that; date adjusted to 1997 - LD]
PhilMH SUBS 9th Jan 2023 | | Vinyl AlbumFairport Convention - John Babbacombe Lee | Just looked at the Island Italy page, and other early 70's releases have an extra 1 on the catalogue number, so presumably Island's Italian licensee did that for a reason.
PhilMH SUBS 2nd Jan 2023 | | CD AlbumLittle Richard - 18 Greatest Hits | Though copyrighted 1985 like the linked original issue that wad distributed by Capitol, I think this entry with a slightly changed catalogue number, a barcode, and new label logo, dates from 1992, when Rhino signed a distribution deal with Atlantic and then a 50% share was sold to Time Warner.
PhilMH SUBS 31st Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJoni Mitchell - For The Roses | The SP just signifies a pressing by Specialty Records Corporation of Olyphant, PA. (no relation to Specialty Records of Little Richard fame), which later became WEA Manufacturing; similarly, the PR and RI on other copies indicate pressings by Presswell (PR), and PRC Recording Company of Richmond, IN (RI).
PhilMH SUBS 30th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumNick Drake - Nick Drake | Probably for publishing reasons, i.e. Capitol didn't want to pay out too much in royalties; US publishing royalties are different to the UK and much of the world, being a set amount of cents per track (I don't know what it was then, now I think it's somewhere above $0.10), but the amount increases for tracks longer than five minutes, and there are a couple of those here, so the more tracks there are, and the more over 5 mins, then the more that has to be paid out. UK I think is still 6.75% of the price of the record, and that's then divided up between all the songs, whether there are 2 or 20.
PhilMH SUBS 29th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJimmy McGriff - Jimmy McGriff's Greatest Organ Hits | Reviewed in Gramophone issue dated September 1969, showing mono and stereo catalogue numbers UAL 29010 and UAS 29010 respectively; Discogs apparently has the stereo release, but only has a (small) image for the front cover.
PhilMH SUBS 18th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumHank Mobley - A Slice Of The Top | Hi candiman, Discogs doesn't have an entry for BNTJ(M) 1028, but it does for BNTJ(M) 1027 by Jackie McLean, and it is designated as South Africa, which makes sense as a lot of EMI South African releases have a J (presumably for Johannesburg) in the catalogue number. Some other clues that might be on your copy are Artone Press (printers) and publishing company Laetrec (though I think that was the publishing company of rival Teal Records - "Laet" being Teal backwards - so less likely on an EMI release).

PhilMH SUBS 13th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - American Graffiti | As this is distributed by EMI, it is the 1974 reissue; the 1973 original via Decca had catalogue number MUPS 496, and three less tracks (MGM didn't give permission for Mark Dinning, and EMI/Capitol didn't give permission for the Beach Boys, even though EMI were taking over the MCA licence in January 1974).
PhilMH SUBS 13th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumBrenda Lee - The Brenda Lee Story | As this is distributed by EMI, it must be a January 1974 or later release, MCA was still with Decca in 1972 - and I think I can see the date code 7402 (February 1974) in the bottom right-hand corner of the back cover.
PhilMH SUBS 13th Dec 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumLoretta Lynn - Here I Am Again | Copyrighted 1972, but as this is distributed by EMI, it must be January 1974 or later, MCA was still with Decca in 1972.
PhilMH SUBS 2nd Dec 2022 | | CD AlbumBob Marley And The Wailers - Exodus [Deluxe Edition] | Sorry to be picky Helen, but the UK is still part of Europe, and a member of the Council of Europe (which now has 46 member states, as Russia was expelled this year); it is only the EU that the UK left.
PhilMH SUBS 1st Dec 2022 | | CD AlbumMantronix - The Incredible Sound Machine | The Netherlands entry on Discogs seems to be the same as this one, i,e disc made in Holland and booklet and inserts printed in USA (and has 86 owners), whilst their USA entry has a US made disc with the same inserts, so maybe EMI Holland imported the printed components for some reason.
PhilMH SUBS 25th Nov 2022 | | CD AlbumPatti LaBelle - Patti | Schwann CD catalogue from November 1987 lists this with a date of May 1987, which appears to have been the date that it was first listed in the catalogue, so actual release month could have been as much as two months earlier; I think that's enough to change the year to 1987.
PhilMH SUBS 25th Nov 2022 | | CD AlbumGladys Knight And The Pips - The One And Only | Hi Helen, I suspect someone copied and pasted the text from this release (which is a coupling of 1973 & 1974 albums) and forgot to change the years!
