rhythmdog 25th Aug 2021 | | 78 RPMBoogie Ramblers - Cindy Lou / Such As Love | For unknown reasons, what should have been Goldband #1028-1030 were inadvertently numbered 1128-1130.
Given that Goldband G-1015 dates to late 1955, this might actually have been a 1956 release.

rhythmdog 30th Apr 2021 | | 78 RPMJimmy Liggins And His Drops Of Joy - Move Out Baby / Rough Weather Blues | The 78 is cut poorly - the grooves seem to use barely half of the available space on the shellac - and is very hissy, too. From the first Specialty series, of 500-525, which ran concurrently with the Specialty 300 series, which- when it finally reached number 499, skipped forward to Specialty 526. The label did the same when they reached record number 700, as there had also been a short-lived 700 series in the early days...
|
rhythmdog 30th Apr 2021 | | 78 RPMCalvin Boaz - Just A Dream / Saffronia Bee | Apparently, this label style and manufacturer is just a later iteration of the Golden Guinea G & G, and just a continuation of the 1000 series, based in information in Bob McGrath's "The R&B Indies"- although that source does have errors, it seems correct in this instance. G & G was intermixed with Gem singles, and was also affiliated with the Royal and Sepia labels, all out of Los Angeles, then later Hollywood.

rhythmdog 5th Jul 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - A Million Dollars Worth Of Doo-Wop Volume 6 | I should add, even the titles and the group names have occasionally been mangled as these CD's were perhaps too hurriedly rushed out. Or perhaps there was some attempt to disguise the correct titles and artists to make it more difficult for other collectors to track down some of the items.
For whatever reason, the name of the group on track 4 is actually "Georgie Torrence And The Dippers". The name of the group on track 12 is "Murphreesboro" singular and without "The". The name of the group on track 13 is "Little Prince And The Freeloaders". The title on track 9 is "What Is Your Name".
|
rhythmdog 4th Jul 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Harmony Classics Volume 2 | Track 4, "Love Me" by Willie And Ruth (Spark label) is the original to the Elvis Presley cover.
"Close Your Eyes" by The Admirals (King label( is a cover of the 5 Keys original on Capitol.

rhythmdog 4th Jul 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Group Classics | There are numerous typos and spelling inconsistencies among the three sources of information: inside front cover, back cover and disc. I did my best to provide correct information. An example is the first track. Grammatically, it should say "Please Tell Me You're Mine". However, I know from multiple sources that the original single actually says "Please Tell Me Your Mine", which is shown on the inside front cover, but not on the back cover nor on the disc.

rhythmdog 26th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumDJ Shadow And Cut Chemist - Brainfreeze | There may be more than one edition of this CD. My copy was made in England from where it was imported back into the US!, but the CD was originally produced in the US. My copy has no information regarding the source 45's which is why I refer those interested to the discogs page. Also, my copy apparently has a different front cover than the release at discogs.
The label of the CD is a copy of one of the records used in the mix- a 45 sold at 7-11 stores in the 1960's to hype the slurpy.

rhythmdog 26th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Chicago Blues The Chance Era | ReviewAt least half of the recordings in this 2 CD set went unreleased while the Chance label was in business from 1950-1954. Inside of the first CD is some discographical information, including Chance matrix numbers. On several occasions, the compilers chose unreleased alternate takes of recordings that were actually released, for unknown reasons. The sound quality is spotty, which might reflect the deterioration of the source tapes, or perhaps the original recordings were poorly made- and finally, the artist names shown on the back of the CD's and on the cover are often not the names under which the recordings were released (although this is corrected in the discography).
On the other hand, where else is one to find this stuff at all?

rhythmdog 26th Jun 2020 | | CD AlbumElmore James - Elmore James King Of The Slide Guitar | ReviewSome of his best work, even though many titles were previously released on other labels, the versions cut for Bobby Robinson hold their own. Lacking a discography or release information and the artwork makes reading the titles quite difficult on disc 2, but worthwhile.
