The Orioles - The Orioles
This LP has been bootlegged, and it might even be a clever fake altogether, but what makes me doubt that is that some of the choices for cuts are definitely not ones the main group of Orioles fans would ever pick, so I do think genuine mid-50's copies exist.

Even the red plastic doesn't bother me, as LP-1016, which should be fairly close in time frame to this one, comes on red plastic.

On the other hand, what worries me is that this LP is not documented anywhere at all, except via its few sales captured at popsike. That is to say, specifically, it is not listed at Discogs, not listed in Jerry Osborne's "Rockin' Records", nor in Tim Neely's "American Records".

The Orioles - You're Gone / Everything They Said Came True
Interesting to me that for both this and the preceding single, Jubilee switched to gold print. By the next Orioles' single, it was back to silver.

The Orioles - It's Too Soon To Know / Barbra Lee
From a write-up about the songwriter, Deborah Chessler in Discogs:
Quote:
She began to manage the Vibra-naires, a group that would become the Orioles. She got them booked on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts TV show, where they came in third but were a popular success. Their first record, a single called "It's Too Soon to Know," had been previously recorded by Savannah Churchill. The group's version of the song, which came out in June 1948, was considered one of the first rhythm and blues songs...

The It's A Natural single was also pressed in a purple label color, and eventually was put out on Jubilee, probably in November of 1948 at the same time as Jubilee 5001 was released. Widely considered the first rhythm and blues vocal group hit; sometimes called the first rock and roll record. It was also ground-breaking in that Deborah Chessler, a Jewish woman, was managing an African-American vocal group at a time when the industry was rigidly segregated.

The Orioles - What Are You Doing New Year's Eve / (It's Gonna Be A) Lonely Christmas
"Lonely Christmas" was first issued in 1948 as the B side of Jubilee 5001. In November of 1949, this pairing was first released. It was then re-released for Christmas of 1952, with the blue top pink labels. Then the all pink label 78's were issued for Christmas, 1954, along with a picture sleeve, very much like the 45. The image of the sleeve here was sold with a pink 78 in 2020.

This seems fairly rare. Only two sales of the 78 and none of the 45 (known to exist) were documented at popsike.

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton - Hound Dog / Rock A Bye Baby
This pairing is a whole lot rarer on 78 than the original pairing with "Night Mare" as the flip. I must have looked at at least 100, maybe 150 sales of "Hound Dog" on 78, and found exactly one which had "Rock A Bye Baby" on the flip. Although there was no image of that side, based on the seller's description it is clear that each side must have used their original labels, as the listing called the record number 1647. The image of the "Hound Dog" side doesn't show any differences from one version of the 1953 labels.

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton - Hound Dog / Rock A Bye Baby
This pairing didn't occur until 1955 at the earliest (which is when "Rock A Bye Baby" was first released on Peacock 1647), and more likely than not came about because of Elvis' hit, so 1956 is the most likely date.

Are both songs actually present on the disc? Of course on the 45, they are the two sides of Scepter 1211. However, only "Boys" is Scepter "1211B" as shown on this side of the 78 and the sellers do not specify that both songs are present.
