RogerFoster 21st Dec 2022 | | CD AlbumDetroit Emeralds - Let's Get Together | The "Long overdue CD debut for the Detroit Emeralds' final album" as it says on the back of this release.
The original LP was generally met with a disappointing public response in 1978, as Tony Rounce points out in his excellent notes. However, one interesting factoid that Mr Rounce missed out on was that Track #5 "What's The Deal" was issued as a 45 in The Netherlands and became a sizable hit, reaching #24 in the Nederlandse Top 40 on 16 Sep 1978.

RogerFoster 11th Dec 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - Classic Salsoul Mastercuts Volume 2 | Although listed in both the notes and the track-listing on the back cover, Track #9 .. "Sing Sing" by Gaz isn't included in my copy of the CD.
|
RogerFoster 10th Nov 2022 | | CD AlbumVarious Artists - The Sound Of Funk Volume One | @Motownfan ... I would have bought this shortly after its release and my copy has the amateurish red cover so I'd say with 99.9999% certainty that the red cover is the original.
From what I remember GSS repackaged a number of their CDs a few years later ('97/8?) with more "generic" covers and that must be the image that passarihno posted.
Volume 2 in the series also had a similar change of packaging, as did Volume Three..
|
RogerFoster 17th Jul 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJackie Wilson - Nobody But You | You could be correct about that CD compiler having just "guessed" at 1976.
The tracks, of course, were recorded in 1975 just prior to Jackie Wilson becoming comatose at the end of September '75. There were two Brunswick singles issued from the LP, "Don't Burn No Bridges" and "Nobody But You" which 45Cat has released in November '75 and March '77 respectively. It looks like the LP was promoted to coincide with the release of the "Nobody But You" single as the label for that 45 specifically mentions the existence of the LP but whether the LP had come out earlier remains unclear.
I have been looking through my old copies of "Blues & Soul" to see if I can find any clues to confirm a 1976 release but so far have drawn a blank. The nearest I've got to this is the 30th November 1976 edition which has an article about a special fundraising concert, starring The Spinners and Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, that was held on 3rd October at The Latin Casino in New Jersey that had raised $60,000 for him.
|
RogerFoster 16th Jul 2022 | | Vinyl AlbumJackie Wilson - Nobody But You | The CD booklet notes in the 1999 UK re-release of this LP on Edsel are quite clear that this was released in 1976, though no month is given.
Alan Robinson's notes in the CD booklet for the Edsel release also comment that the LP was so poorly promoted that some sources have it as never having been released!!
|
RogerFoster 16th Jul 2022 | | CD AlbumJackie Wilson - Beautiful Day & Nobody But You | Added images of The CD Disc, the track-list and credits taken from the CD Booklet and the back cover of the CD Booklet.
The booklet consists of 8 pages, three of which are an informative essay by Alan Robinson where he writes about the circumstances surrounding the recording and release of the two LPs ("Beautiful Day" and "Nobody But You") reissued via this CD.
|
RogerFoster 1st Jul 2022 | | CD AlbumMartha Reeves And The Vandellas - Early Classics | It's interesting that the image of the disc provided by fantasticbaggie has a picture of the group on it. This fits in well with other releases in the series which also had "picture discs", such as this Edwin Starr release and this one by The Supremes.
In contrast the entry for this release at Discogs only has a boring looking silver disc, as do all the copies of this that are for sale there (or at least those where the seller has bothered to provide an image) and copies currently on sale at EBay are exactly the same!!
This begs the question ... is the "picture disc" version a separate release, which copies of this release are likely to have it and is there any way of knowing what version I might get if I bought a copy "blind"?
|
RogerFoster 1st Jul 2022 | | CD AlbumThe Originals - Portrait Of The Originals | I've now added images of the disc, the track-list as it appears in the insert, the back of the insert and the back of the release.
I've also added a new image of the front cover (#3020586). I shall leave it to the discretion of our friendly neighbourhood moderators whether to use this as a replacement for the lead image provided by TheDA1 which has served until now.
