David Gray - Flesh
Review
The second album by Mr Gray-before Babylon made his name. This is quintessentially a singer-songwriter /bedsitter sound. If that is your area of interest-I would argue that this is essential. Acoustic guitar based songs about love, heartbreak and optimism. The opener is the only oddity-an attempt to rock out that is of some interest, the rest has a variable tempo but a great, consistent feel. IMHO-his peak.

Put this under 'The Verve' but band is 'Verve' up to some time in the 90s when they became The Verve due to contractual issue with the Verve label.

Ian Anderson jokingly refers to his 'heavy metal road crew' near the end of 'Jump Start'-a reference to the band winning a Grammy in the hard rock/heavy metal category (ahead of Metallica!). So I have added a picture of the advert Chrysalis put in the press after.

Not sure what to do with my version-has red ribbon and ICD4 on spine, yet cat no on labels is the same. Furthermore side2 has different publisher credits. (Posted above) Matrices are: ICD1 4 A-4U/B-3U with 'Porky' and ICD 2 A-2U/B-3U with 'Pecko'. So must be later version. Do you want rest of scans here?

Review
This album followed 'Caution Horses' which had a haunted breathlessness and set the standard pretty high. So this is the classic case of how to follow up a critical and artistic success. The first 4 tracks are a natural progression from the previous platter-there is a more electric feel but the tales of regret, hidden terrors and dreams of escape persist. The lyrics are superb (This life holds it's secrets, like a seashell holds the sea) (woman on the porches comparing alilbis) and the melodies are growers.
Then we have the classic carcrash when two artists that you admire collaborate and the result falls between two stools. John Prine is the culprit here, the song (If You were the Woman) doesn't suit his voice and it just drags. This is followed by a clumsy attempt to be Neil Young with loud guitars and obvious words.
The B-side is similar-the originals are generally very good, but the song especially written for the band by Townes van Zandt just doesn't fly-it flops.Final cover is absolutely brilliant and the pros outweigh the cons overall. Also nice to have a bit of 90's vinyl when it was basically being dropped by the majors. And yes Margo Timmins is photogenic as well as a top-notch singer. Conclusion-it stays.
