Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicBad Company @ Winter Gardens | Great gig. Really strong energetic sound. Loved it.

Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicWest, Bruce And Laing @ Free Trade Hall | Actually disappointing. I had bought the WBL album on the strength of it having jack Bruce in it and enjoying 'Mountain'. The first track is ok 'Why Donntcha', but then it becomes very ordinary and this gig pretty much reflected that. A brief moment of magic as jack Bruce sang 'Sunshine of Your Love', but a bit of a damp squid.
I wasn't to know it at the time, but this was the last time I went to the Free Trade hall. Thank you for some great memories.

Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicPink Floyd @ Free Trade Hall | This was abandoned due to a power failure and rescheduled for 29th March.

Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicPink Floyd @ Free Trade Hall | This was an extra night as the first one was already sold out. The first night was a rescheduled date arranged after the original gig had to be abandoned due to a power failure. They started with the whole of, what was to become, 'Darkside of the Moon'. Then played the established favourites 'One of These Days', Set the Controls', Eugene' Echoes'.
The band were just starting to go into the kind of form that would propel them into the kind of stratosphere that they lived in for the rest of their lives.

Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicThe Who @ Free Trade Hall | One of the few times I saw The Who with a support band, which was 'The Joe Walsh band' before he went off to join The Eagles. The Who were still in full 1970 mode white boiler suit, skeleton costume and fringes (god knows what Keith Moon wore). They were trying out a new set, which included 'Water' and some other songs that didn't seem to quite summon up too much enthusiasm. among the audience. An extract of 'Tommy' was played. I was sat on row'B' right in front of John Entwhistle. Very loud but when they were into the parts of the set they had been playing for some time and had already been heard on 'Live at Leeds' they were great. No guitar smashing though.

Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicPink Floyd @ Free Trade Hall | Part of the Atom Heart Mother tour. They also played 'Alan's Pyschedlic Breakfast', probably one of the few times that was played. How I wish I'd bootlegged it. Went on a bit late and I managed to blag a lift home with some friends who had a spare place in their car then went back to Manchester to pick up two other friends who hadn't been so fortunate.

Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicVan Der Graaf Generator @ Free Trade Hall | Utter confusion surrounding the distribution of tickets. There was a postal strike going on and tickets had been sent out in the post but hadn't arrived. You gave your name and address to a nice lady on the door who checked to see if you were on the list and in you went.
This was part of the famous Chrysalis six-bob tour, which meant tickets cost six shillings (30p) read it and weep.
First time I had ever seen Genesis and I loved them. Lindisfarne were still in their flier mode. Van der Graaf were just monumental.

Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicEmerson, Lake And Palmer @ Free Trade Hall | This was awful. I can't comment about the quality of the music as the sound was dreadful. I couldn't hear anything other than the top registers. My ears whistled for days. I blame this gig for my tinnitus.
|
Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicPentangle @ Free Trade Hall | The only time I saw The Pentangle and I wish it wasn't. Really enjoyed it. Went to the gig straight from work (Lewis's Department Store). Then got the train back to Wigan and walked home to Up Holland.
|
Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicRoy Harper @ Free Trade Hall | Started very late due to The Strawbs' van breaking down somewhere near Carlisle. Rick Wakeman was with The Straws at the time. Roy Harper didn't want to come on early and play an interrupted set so we sat patiently until The Strawbs arrived. Strawbs were good. The bit of Roy Harper I saw before I had to leave to catch the last train back to Wigan was alright.
|
Uphollandlatic 28th May 2020 | | Live MusicDeep Purple @ Free Trade Hall | I went to this show on my own and was able to buy a ticket on the door. Just a few months later Deep Purple brought out 'In Rock' and went mega. Both bands were great that night.
|
Uphollandlatic 27th May 2020 | | Live MusicJethro Tull @ Free Trade Hall | Savoy Brown blew Tull off the stage at this show. Ian Anderson was clearly a bit miffed at how well Savoy Brown had been received.
|
Uphollandlatic 27th May 2020 | | Live MusicPink Floyd @ Free Trade Hall | This was the best Pink Floyd show I ever saw. They did The Man & The Journey suite. The music was sublime.
