Don Olsen's Pacific Electric Trilogy - Transit Gloria Mundi
Volume 1 - The Southern District
Step back into a railfan's paradise - Los Angeles in the 1940s, where the world's largest interurban was scheduling 1,100 passenger trains a day.
From thousands of feet of vintage film, producer-archivist Don Olsen has assembled an extraordinary record of this interurban empire.
Volume 1, first in a trilogy of Pacific Electric videos, features the Southern District, with the Long Beach/San Pedro, Newport Beach, Santa Ana and El Segundo/Torrance Lines.
The evolution of ten and twelve hundred class cars and the "blimps" which supplanted them is well documented.
Separate sections are devoted to carload freight and maintenance-of-way activities, including rail and overhead replacement and wrecks.
As the system's premier freight hauler, electric, steam and diesel powered freights, plus box motors and RPOs kept the rails well polished with wartime activity, and these amazing scenes recall it all with vivid clarity.

Volume 2 - The Western District
PE considered its Western District a "suburban" service.
Although the Burbank, Valley and Venice Short Lines were certainly interurban in character, their equipment generally was not.
Thus this Volume of the Western District focuses on 600 (5050) class cars, which ran on most of the Lines; venerable 800s in rare shots along the Redondo Beach-Del Rey Line; 950s and 1000s, which served the western beaches; and PE's newest cars, the thirty PCCs in the 5000 class.
Also shown are 100s and Birneys in local service.
Our classic coverage of Western District operations features these types of cars, burnishing the rails down to Santa Monica, cresting the Cahuenga Pass or skimming along the Ivanhoe Hills on private right-of-way; plus downtown L.A., with the Subway and Hill Street Terminals, congested Hill Street and its tunnels, and facilities at Toluca yard, West Hollywood and Ocean Park carhouses.
Volume 2 of "Remembering the Red Cars", in the finest quality digital and visual transfer, affords the PE fan an unparalleled opportunity to relive these sights and sounds.

Volume 3 - The Northern District
Justifiably revered as the world's greatest interurban, the Pacific Electric's vast empire has required three video volumes to cover it in detail.
Volume Three features the Northern District, plus Special New Year's Day trains and RPO/Box Motor operations.
The seven lines which provided the District's passenger services (Watts-Sierra Vista, Alhambra-Temple City, two Pasadena Lines, Sierra Madre, Monrovia-Glendora and San Bernardino Lines) are all represented in this mostly color odyssey.
Revisit PE's largest and busiest district and savor the sights and sounds of the big red tens, elevens, twelve hundreds and RPO/boxmotors burnishing over one hundred miles of electrified trackage in the busy decade of the 1940s.

Today's Northwestern Pacific - Pentrex
Take a step back in time as Pentrex pays affectionate tribute to the Northwestern Pacific Railroad.

It's 1992 and the Northwestern Pacific, a Southern Pacific subsidiary, is still running its venerable SD-9s on through trains from Suisun City to Willits in Northern California.

Lumber is still the chief commodity hauled by this historic road, as it's been for years.

Six days a week you can still see NWP trains traveling the 156-mile line.

Much of the traffic originates in Eureka on the newly-formed North Coast Railroad (formerly the Eureka Southern).

The NWP interchanges with the North Coast in Willits and forwards those trains to the Southern Pacific (Now Union Pacific as of 1996) at Suisun City.

NWP diesels were leased by the North Coast Railroad during its first months, recreating the days when the NWP still owned the line to Eureka.

You'll be treated to a brief look at the operations of the North Coast Railroad and the Eureka Southern, as well as an up-close and personal tour of the Northwestern Pacific.

Petaluma is NWP's base of operations.

Sprint trains and their crews originate here, running both north and south on the line.

Normally the north end of the line is only run at night but in 1992 NWP ran Willits-to-Petaluma trains during daylight hours, providing us with a rare opportunity to capture this scenic route.

Three years of filming throughout the changing seasons resulted in the original release of this show in 1993 as a VHS video.

Now it is available on DVD, delivering these fascinating images with the enhanced viewing quality that DVD provides.

Southern Pacific Historical And Technical Society - Rail Passenger Service History
Pacific Electric Railway (PERy) was created in 1901 with Henry Edwards Huntington as principal stockholder. Huntington completed the first PE line in 1902 which ran from Los Angeles to Long Beach. He later sold his shares to Southern Pacific in 1910.

In 1911 the “Great Merger” took place. Although continuing to operate under the Pacific Electric name, Southern Pacific Railway merged PERy with nearly all of the interurban railways in a four-county region of Southern California. PERy grew to connect various cities across the Los Angeles metropolitan area. PERy vehicles were commonly known as the Red Cars, the most obvious feature distinguishing PERy cars from the "Yellow Car" vehicles operated by the Los Angeles Railway.

As patronage on passenger rail lines declined after the second World War, PERy began converting rail routes to bus service. Eventually, in 1953, PERy sold its passenger operations to the Metropolitan Coach Lines. Metropolitan Coach Lines continued the conversion from rail passenger service to bus passenger service and the final former Pacific Electric Railway passenger rail line was converted to bus service in 1961. Southern Pacific Railway eventually abolished the Pacific Electric Railway Company in 1965, folding what little mileage remained of PERy’s freight operation into Southern Pacific’s own operation.

OUR COVER PHOTO

A MIGHTY SYMBOL of electric traction in wartime America was the Milwaukee Road's western electrification, and on April 2, 1944, Cpl. Ira L. Swett planted both feet firmly in the snow at Avery, Montana, while the photographer captured both the editor and his life's work--the electric railway. Boxcab locomotive E12 was heading up a troop train, and Swett long remembered that Seattle-to-Tampa ride in a swaying, drafty Pullman car.

Jim Walker - Pacific Electric Red Cars
Of the rail lines created at the turn of the 20th century, in order to build interurban links through Southern California communities around metropolitan Los Angeles, the Pacific Electric grew to be the most prominent of all.

The Pacific Electric Railway is synonymous with Henry Edwards Huntington, the capitalist with many decades of railroad experience, who formed the "P.E." and expanded it as principal owner for nearly its first decade.

Huntington sold his PE holdings to the giant Southern Pacific Railroad in 1910, and the following year the SP absorbed nearly every electric line in the four-county area around Los Angeles in the "Great Merger" into a "new" Pacific Electric.

Founded in 1901 and terminated in 1965, Pacific Electric was known as the "World's Great Interurban."

LOOKING BACK, The seeds of Growing Up With Trains, A Southern California Album, written with Donald Sims, were planted in my mind outside London in 1980 at Clapham Junction.

Glancing out of my coach window at all those youthful "train Spotters" at the world's busiest station impressed me with the universality of liking trains.

In this book we'll take you on a spin around Northern California over the last five decades, touching down here and there to see the trains that people loved, and to learn a little about some of the fans who took the pictures.

The 16 pages of color give us the chance to add another dimension to our appreciation of trains, and the chance to try out some personal color layout ideas.
