Might more be my unclear or inaccurate wording. I just meant he wasn’t playing on the session, Durham did the arranging. Moten may well have directed. I did credit Basie on piano. Moten had pretty much turned over the piano bench to the Count by the end of 1929

I guess it would depend on the source. DAHR lists Bennie Moten as a director, while Count Basie handled the piano chores.

This was Moten’s last session, though neither Moten were present. The band was broke. Eddie Durham arranged this session that included Hot Lips Page tp; Eddie Barefield cl,as; Ben Webster ts.
The nucleus of the Basie band is here, Joe Keyes-tp; Dan Minor-tb; Jack Washington- as,bar; Walter Page- bass; Basie-p; and Jimmy Rushing- v would all be present when Count Basie cut his first discs in 1937 with the full band.
