Two wonderful sides by this unit.
House In Harlem is a fine blues based theme featuring nice solos from Buster Bailey cl, Keg Johnson tb, and Allen, open horn.
Rug Cutter is a thing of beauty. A great solo from Bailey, Hilton Jefferson as,. A muted but sometimes growling HRA, and Claude Jones tb. All propelled by a lithe and supple rhythm section of a graceful Lawrence Lucie, g, Walter Johnson swings lightly on the drums and Elmer James* drives the tune with his bass, thumping the tub in just the right spots. Horace Henderson gets a few bars on piano. Jones and HRA on the ride out. “Really In there,” as they used to say.
• not convinced of this Rust line up, sure sounds like Pops Foster to me, and if that’s the case, might be Paul Barbarin, drums
