Comment by xiphophilos:
I've corrected the release date of this record and of the Oscar Peterson to 1953. More corrections may be needed. As you said, Han, some of these dates seem to be guesses.
The Eddie Arnold disc JO-396 was
released in the US in January 1954, so 1954 seems like a likely release date for the HMV export version.
I've corrected the three nearest cat. numbers (up to JO-406) after the Eddy Arnold releases also to 1954.
Comment by han enderman:
HMV JO-382 - Date should be corrected to 1953 (possibly 1954). 1929 is recording date. To get an indication of the release date (from some immediately available label images), JO-301 by Tampa Red is a 1951 recording (Victor E1- mx), JO-342/354/383 by Oscar Peterson have an E2-mx, and JO-379/384 by Hank Snow (E3-VB-0615/611) are from 1953, so this Chevalier reissue JO-382 dates from the 1950s and probably from 1953/54. In addition to such contemporary recordings, the JO series also contains earlier jazz like Ellington (1940s) and Waller. Looking at later JO issues, JO-417 is by Eddy Arnold (E3-VB-2965) and JO-439 is a 1954 Hank Snow recording (E4-VB-5576). - The date of the label pictured here is later, as this is the last JO label type, without dot in the catnr. - Some JO release dates in this website (see Mike Thomas' website for
HMV JO listing) are:
JO-18 Hampton (1939), 1948
JO-22 Tommy Dorsey, 1948
JO-89 Fats Waller, 1948
JO-276 Piano Red (E1-mx), Oct 1951.
JO-298 Piano Red (E0-mx), Apr 1952.
JO-383 Oscar Peterson, 1954 [now corrected to 1953, Mod.]
JO-384 Hank Snow, 1953
JO-396 Eddy Arnold, 1954
JO-400 Eddy Arnold, 1954
JO-404 Eartha Kitt, 1953 [now corrected to 1954, because JO-396 is securely dated to 1954. Mod]
JO-421 Eddie Fisher, 1953 (E2- 1952 Christmas recordings), so not unlikely released 1953 [Correcetd to 1954. Mod.]
JO-464 Bruce Low, 1957
Is there a source for these dates? JO-276/298 show the month of release, and is Oscar Peterson's JO-383 from 1954 (and not 1953)?
JO-406 is shown as a 1953 release, but such dates may have been assumed or copied.
I searched for "JO" but then I did not find "J.O", so there may be more info in this website. Is it possible to find all releases of the JO series in all spellings?
