Bill Fick 17th Apr 2015 | | 78 RPMLuke The Drifter [Hank Williams] - No, No, Joe / Help Me Understand (1950) | Probably one of the reasons the A-side wasn't a re-issue priority was because Stalin died in 1953, making the song out-of-date.
Bill Fick 17th Apr 2015 | | 78 RPMJimmie Davis - Barnyard Stomp / Red Nightgown Blues (1932) | Even smuttier than "Tom Cat And Pussy Blues"??
Bill Fick 12th Mar 2015 | | 78 RPMElvis Presley - My Happiness / That's When Your Heartaches Begin (1953) | Technically, I think that this should be listed under the Memphis Recording Service, rather than Sun proper...Or maybe Memphis Recording Service/Sun...
Surprised that McCartney didn't buy it, seeing as how he already has Bill Black's stand-up bass & other things...
"Re-pressing" is actually a misnomer, since these recordings were actually cut into the lacquer of the disc itself. They originally never got to the pressing stage in the first place, since they were personal recordings only.
Bill Fick 11th Mar 2015 | | 78 RPMKelly Brothers [gospel] - Prayer For Tomorrow / God Said He Was Coming Back Again (1955) | Looks similar to a Chance label. Connection?
Bill Fick 11th Mar 2015 | | 78 RPMElvis Presley - My Happiness / That's When Your Heartaches Begin (1953) | Too bad it wasn't bought by someone better than that...
Bill Fick 18th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMSlim Rhodes - Do What I Do / Take And Give (1956) | Lucky man...
Bill Fick 16th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMSlim Rhodes - Do What I Do / Take And Give (1956) | Best record Slim ever cut.
Bill Fick 16th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMSlim Rhodes - Gonna Romp And Stomp / Bad Girl (1956) | Agreed.
Bill Fick 15th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMBarrett Strong - Money (That's What I Want) / Oh I Apologize (1959) | Never even seen one outside of photographs. One of the last 78s (if not THE last) made in the US, not counting special one-off releases. Funny how this is on 78 & the original issue on Tamla wasn't.
Bill Fick 13th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMBill Haley And His Saddle Men - Why Do I Cry Over You? / I'm Gonna Dry Ev'ry Tear With A Kiss (1950) | I have an early Errol Garner Atlantic 78 ("Miserlou" is the title of one side - I'll post it when I can dig it out), & it's on a yellow/black label, similar to the early Atlantic 45s... I'm assuming that this was their early jazz series. Evidently, their early releases were color-coded by label...
Bill Fick 12th Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMJohn Lee Hooker And His Guitar - Sally May / Boogie Chillen' (1948) | Although I usually hate re-makes as a general rule, I actually prefer JLH's re-cut for Vee-Jay in 1959. The '59 re-cut was used in "The Blues Brothers".
Bill Fick 30th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMElvis Presley With The Jordanaires - Loving You / (Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear | Boot...no question.
Bill Fick 30th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMPat Boone - I'll Remember Tonight / The Mardi Gras March (1958) | Sep '58... Gotta be close to the end of the 78 run, if not the actual end.
Bill Fick 30th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Del Vikings - What Made Maggie Run / Little Billy Boy (1957) | Their names are all over the place, just like their member line-up...Del Vikings, Dell Vikings, Del-Vikings, Dell-Vikings, etc.
Bill Fick 30th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMTommy Dorsey - I'll Never Smile Again / Little White Lies (1941) | A-side vocal by Frank Sinatra & The Pied Pipers.
Bill Fick 7th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMFranklin Delano Roosevelt - President Roosevelt's War Message To Congress And The Nation (December 8, 1941) / President Roosevelt's War Message To Congress And The Nation (Completion) (December 8, 1941) (1942) | The attack on Pearl Harbor was 73 years ago today. "Lest We Forget..."
Bill Fick 7th Aug 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Crickets - Oh, Boy / Not Fade Away (1957) | In all actuality, the true songwriters of "Not Fade Away" are Buddy Holly & Jerry Allison.
Bill Fick 5th Aug 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - Long Tall Sally / I Call Your Name (1964) | Release date on this should be 1964.
Bill Fick 4th Jul 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Diamonds - The Stroll / Land Of Beauty (1957) | There's a pressing of this on the Mercury/Starday label also, probably a fluke...
Bill Fick 29th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Beach Boys - Good Vibrations / Heroes And Villains (2011) | At least they spent the money to put out the "SMiLE" boxed set (finally!!)... Only been waiting 30 years for it.
Bill Fick 29th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMMuddy Waters - I Can't Be Satisfied / I Feel Like Going Home (1948) | The A-side of this (same recording) was re-released on a Chess 78 proper with a completely different title (was pleasantly surprised when I played it). Not sure about the B-side. I'll have to dig out my copies & check...
Bill Fick 29th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMMuddy Waters - I Can't Be Satisfied / I Feel Like Going Home (1948) | Must've had the same typesetter for various Chicago labels back then. There's early Vee-Jay records with "rythm" mis-spelled also.
Bill Fick 29th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand / I'll Cry Instead | Would be kinda cool to have, wouldn't it?
Bill Fick 29th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMNorman Rose - Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty (1951) | Can't believe I actually found this listed. I've had this set since I was a little boy!
Bill Fick 29th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMWillie Mabon - I Don´t Know / Worry Blues (1952) | Originally issued on Parrot 1050.
Bill Fick 28th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMBo Diddley - Crackin' Up / The Great Grandfather (1959) | I have this on the "checkerboard" label.
Bill Fick 28th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Beatles - I Want To Hold Your Hand / I'll Cry Instead | I'm glad that someone finally exposed this for what it really is, a BS record. Hell, even the font is wrong for when this record was (supposedly) made. I've seen on another web site (can't remember where), where it's stated that this record is worth some un-Godly amount of money. Don't bet on it...
Bill Fick 28th Jun 2014 | | 78 RPMThe Beach Boys - Good Vibrations / Heroes And Villains (2011) | Jock_Girl, I agree 110%. I thought exactly the same thing.
