Billy Two 20th Aug 2013 | | 78 RPMPeter Brough And Archie Andrews - No. 9 The Little Fir Tree / No. 10 I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (1953) | Did anyone see "Have I Got News For You" last night ?
A startling resemblance to Ian Hislop !

Billy Two 7th Aug 2013 | | 78 RPMElvis Presley - Gold In The Mts / Pappy Please Won't You Come Home (1963) | Would MGM in the US have pressed a 78 in 1963 ? An6y66 - can you let us know where the source of these finds are, because I think they all need some checking...
:-)

Billy Two 6th Aug 2013 | | 78 RPMElvis Presley - It's Now Or Never | Where did you come across it, An6y66 ?

Billy Two 31st Jul 2013 | | 78 RPMAnita Kuusi And Karjapojat - Seitsemän Päivää (Seven Lonely Days) / Portugalin Huhtikuu (April In Portugal) (1953) | If someone search for "accompaniment" by an orchestra or chorus or whatever, he (she) will use the English word not the Swedish or Finnish for it.
That's why it's useful to have the translation in the notes, so a general search will bring up the answer whether you use English or the language used on the disc.
This is only an English speaking site by default, and the aim ought to be as inclusive for as many different languages as there are different language discs. This disc is as likely to be owned by a Finnish speaker as it is an English speaker, so we should be prepared for the reasonable eventuality that it will be searched for in its native language.
Also, we wouldn't want to start changing what's actually printed on the label in the entry fields, as that really would lead to issues...

Billy Two 30th Jul 2013 | | 78 RPMAnita Kuusi And Karjapojat - Seitsemän Päivää (Seven Lonely Days) / Portugalin Huhtikuu (April In Portugal) (1953) | Generally speaking people will search for the words that are on the actual label so it's good to use exactly what's printed there, whatever language that may be in. However, the Notes section can be used to point out these translations, and indeed that'd be useful for someone like me who hasn't the faintest clue as to the Finnish language !!

Billy Two 26th Jul 2013 | | 78 RPMCalypso Quintet - Penny-Reel / Chambolina (1958) | I wonder if this is the same recording as found on this bootleg 7" ?
|
Billy Two 4th Jan 2013 | | 78 RPML. Macy - To Julia / Eliza Sings | Not to his classical standard, though there are certain family members who've been known to belt out a number or two in a more "popular" fashion (or "Country & Western rubbish", as he'd endearingly condemn anything post-Elvis as !).
|
Billy Two 3rd Jan 2013 | | 78 RPML. Macy - To Julia / Eliza Sings | This was disc was made by my Grandfather at a time (mid 1930's ?) when he was considering a career as a professional singer. One of my Uncles remembers :
"..."To Julia: Daisies", composed by Roger Quilter, recorded at the house of Leslie and Lillian's rather wealthy farming friends the Goulds, at Spring Grove in Loughton. The Goulds owned a recording machine, very scarce indeed at the time, decades before tape-recording.
Unfortunately the wax on which the recording was engraved is rather soft, which means that the quality will have seriously deteriorated. When Leslie died, we brothers clubbed together to get the recording transcribed onto tape, but were disappointed with the standard of reproduction (we knew that for the fee we paid, we should have received a much cleaner transcription).
Leslie had a beautiful voice, and was a very fine interpreter of music, but never had the volume to sing professionally -- he had difficulty being heard in quite a small school hall. He was a BBC Singer, which used to be quite a badge of musical status (there were only a dozen or so at any one time). They were expected to sing from manuscript at first sight, with almost no rehearsal, to very high standards indeed."

|
Billy Two 25th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMH.M. King George V - A Message To The Empire (1936) | The blank side of this is a quite glorious etching of "His Master's Voice". I will endeavour to somehow get scans of this up asap, but am reluctant to risk the discs safety with the methods I've used so far.

Billy Two 7th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMKitty, Daisy And Lewis - Messing With My Life / Coco Nuts (2011) | No, unfortunately it's the standard modern sized label...
KD&L have made a few 78's, I think. In fact ...*checks Discogs*...yes, their first LP actually had a limited edition box set release of 5 x 78rpms !

Billy Two 5th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMMaster E. Lough And G. Thalben Ball - I Know That My Redeemer Liveth ("The Messiah") / I Know That My Redeemer Liveth ("The Messiah") (1928) | Ah, yes, looks like it should do. Cheers, SS. And that'll go for the other HMV I added this morning...
I got into a right mess doing this one, as it snapped while I was scanning it !!

Billy Two 4th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - I Live For You / Organ Piano | Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that the artist responsible for this recording could ever now be identified.

Billy Two 4th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMH. Charrington - Piano By H. Charrington, Pueblo 1952 (1952) | [record=nc798125uk]I've just added[/record] what I think is a similar disc i.e. it's lacquer on a metal base rather than shellac...an acetate. These were privately cut discs, often for home use but also for demonstration purposes. Somewhere (in the attic, to be precise) I have a disc my Grandad cut in the 1930's while he was singing with the BBC radio choir - he apparently had ambitions at one point of being a professional singer, and it was cut to punt round the industry.
I guess it's much the same practice that was still in operation well into the 70's, before cassette tapes became the easier cheaper option..

Billy Two 4th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMKitty, Daisy And Lewis - Messing With My Life / Coco Nuts (2011) | Ah yes, easy enough. Have now added date...
Re : house - same sort of area, but the idea is somewhere larger...
|
Billy Two 4th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMKitty, Daisy And Lewis - Messing With My Life / Coco Nuts (2011) | Cool - will add to the notes. At least with this modern bendy vinyl I could use your tip of weighing the label down to get a decent scan in. The sleeve won't fit though. New scanner for xmas ? But that'll mean a bigger desk. Bigger desk for xmas ? But that'll mean a bigger room. House for sale, anyone ?

Billy Two 4th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMKitty, Daisy And Lewis - Messing With My Life / Coco Nuts (2011) | Released 2011. Sorry for bringing on the modern fangled stuff so soon. Will the drop down be extended to allow the date to be added on entry ?
|
Billy Two 4th Dec 2012 | | 78 RPMJohnny Duncan And The Blue Grass Boys - Last Train To San Fernando / Rock-A-Billy Baby (1957) | My first 78RPM World addition, and a proud one...I love this track. Bee-dee-dee-dee-bam-bam, all galloping horse hair brush snares, urgent washboards and even a rockin' l'il axe solo in the middle, until it chuggingly sloooows down at the end, as it runs out of steam. Super stuff !
Unfortunately, it looks like my scanning abilities are going to be hindered on this site by the fact that 10" 78s don't fit flat on my A4 sized scanner, so they're going to come out a bit blurred. Sorry in advance.
