Fokeman 11th Feb 2021 | | 78 RPMRichard Himber - The Kiss Polka / I Know Why (And So Do You) (1941) | Both labels please Roland. We aim to have both sides for every record. Many thanks...
Fokeman 8th May 2020 | | 78 RPMMcKinley Morganfield - I Be's Troubled / Country Blues (1942) | Great! On that basis the release date is 1942 and we can put the recording details in the notes.
Fokeman 8th May 2020 | | 78 RPMMcKinley Morganfield - I Be's Troubled / Country Blues (1942) | Given the date of the other similar issues, I suspect that this is the recording date rather than the issue date of this record. I doubt he could be recorded and then issued so quickly where records with quite significantly earlier catalogue numbers were issued the following year...
It's therefore my assertion that this was issued in 1942.
Fokeman 4th May 2020 | | 78 RPMLouis Guéguen Et Jean-Marie Hénaff - Jabadao / Bal A Deux / Jidibi / Stoupic (1952) | It is interesting to note that out of 4 records issued by this duo, 3 of the records contained Jabadao and 3 of the records contained Gavotte De Plozévet. Each one of these records contained a different combination and had a different catalogue number but regularly consisted of the same tracks.
See here... for Jibidi spelled correctly. You'll note also that since this is another example of Bombarde / Biniou-Koz the similar pattern of tunes is played - Jabadao, Jibidi, Stoupic, Bal A Deux.
Fokeman 2nd May 2020 | | 78 RPMArmand Haas - An Tour Dantelezet (Le Clocher A Jour) / Di Sul Vintin (Dimanche A L'Aube) (1951) | I nearly removed the SDRM stamps from the images but I relented. It tells a story...
Fokeman 2nd May 2020 | | 78 RPMVarious Artists - Rex Marches On (1939) | I've corrected the spelling of Scott-Comber as per the label and added this as a variant to Billy Scott-Coomber which I believe is the correct spelling...
Fokeman 2nd May 2020 | | 78 RPMTommy Dorsey - Pale Moon (An Indian Love Song) / Hallelujah! (1941) | If it needs a solvent, try zippo lighter fluid - sold by Swan Vesta and others in different shops. This never damages the label, in my experience.
Fokeman 2nd May 2020 | | 78 RPMTommy Dorsey - Pale Moon (An Indian Love Song) / Hallelujah! (1941) | I agree, maybe just drop a couple of drops of warm water on the paper sticker - avoid soaking the whole label...
Fokeman 30th Apr 2020 | | 78 RPMKevrenn C'hlazik - Bale "Rouanezed Kerne" (Marche Des Reines De Cornouaille) / Bale "Koad-Serc'ho" (Marche Du Bagad De Coatserrot) (1953) | If anyone is interested in the possible source of this symbol, which probably has its origins in mediaeval art, there's a wonderful discussion on why "Pigs Play Pipes" and the link between sexuality and playing of the bagpipes here... With the link also to Geoffrey Chaucer, it's saucy but academic!
Fokeman 26th Mar 2020 | | 78 RPMAlhambra Theatre Orchestra - "The Bing Girls Are There" (1917) | About May 1917 from eye, without using the software. There are comparable labels and catalogue numbers in June and April of 1917.
Fokeman 16th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Kingston Trio - The Tijuana Jail / Oh Cindy (1959) | And don't forget that Popsike only record sales of a vaguely significant price, thus low prices aren't even registered. It all leads to skewing of prices to the most high extreme, fooling sellers into insisting on unreasonably high values in order to sell.
Fokeman 14th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Kingston Trio - The Tijuana Jail / Oh Cindy (1959) |
Quote:
Is this site now trying to supply the typically uninformed ebay seller with a justification for unrealistic prices?
That is certainly not the aim, but I very much fear it will be the outcome...
Fokeman 12th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Kingston Trio - The Tijuana Jail / Oh Cindy (1959) | But the problem with this "valuation" feature, is that it gives the "Value" at €93 which is completely unrealistic!
Fokeman 10th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Kingston Trio - The Tijuana Jail / Oh Cindy (1959) | And now, if you have a copy, you've got your work cut out to find another person that wants this record as much as the last! You'll be lucky to get $10
Fokeman 28th Jan 2020 | | 78 RPMPeggy Seeger - Freight Train / Cumberland Gap (1958) | She was indeed!
Fokeman 2nd Jan 2020 | | 78 RPMMichael Percival - Truth On The March / Salute To Life (1941) | Late again! This time our stock of labels were lying under the bombed premises of our printers when they were wanted. Hence this month's labels appear, like Tom Pearce's Grey Mare, "all ghastly white".
Fokeman 2nd Jan 2020 | | 78 RPMMichael Percival - Truth On The March / Salute To Life (1941) | In order to placate our manufacturers we had to omit the second verse from the record:
Now nothing can check us, -
We have torn down the screen
And, stark as a skeleton,
Their crime is seen:
Plotting with lies to keep their power
The power that stood
Upon the wealth they coined
They coined from our blood.
Fokeman 2nd Jan 2020 | | 78 RPMJohn Hargreaves - Van Diemen's Land (Ballad Of Transportation) / Harvest Song (1940) | Old members who have paid their entrance fee to the Topic Records Club will still be able to get their copies of TRC 1, 2, 3, & 4 at 1/6d. C.O.D. members will still pay 2/6d.
Fokeman 2nd Jan 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Soviet State Choir And Orchestra - Soviet Fatherland Song (Land Of Freedom) / The Winkle Woman (1941) | Sovietland, so dear to every teller
Peace and progress build their hopes on them
There's no other land the whole world over,
Where man walks the earth so proud and free
...
Far from Moscow to our farthest border
From the southern hills to northern sea
Man may pass and feel he is the owner
Of our land so beautiful and free
...
Sovietland, etc.
Rolling pastures stretch to the horizon,
We have countless towns both great and small
And the name we give each worker "comrade"
Is to us, the proudest name of all.
For this name makes every man a brother,
No man's colour robs him of this right;
And it matters not how far we travel.
Every man is comrade in our sight.
translation of A side song.

Fokeman 2nd Dec 2019 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Hurry Up, Santa Claus / O Come All Ye Faithful (1952) | Latin hymn is not a composer...
Righto. I've moved the phrase into the Notes. Mod.]
Fokeman 2nd Dec 2019 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - The Doll's Tea Party / Happy Birthday Cake (1950) | Is this 4", 5" or 6"?
Fokeman 30th Oct 2019 | | 78 RPMBessie Smith - St. Louis Blues / Reckless Blues (1938) | In what way improved? Different tax code. Youtube video updated.
Fokeman 22nd Oct 2019 | | 78 RPMEwan MacColl - Sixteen Tons / The Swan Necked Valve (1956) | No, it's by Merle Travis but performed by Tennessee Ernie Ford among (many) others.
Fokeman 30th Sep 2019 | | 78 RPMIsla Cameron - Died For Love / The Queen's Maries (1951) | There's something decidedly wrong with the title to A2. Perhaps "The Queen Marys"? As know as "The Four Marys" sung by the Corries and many others.
... or even "The Queens Mary"?
Fokeman 22nd Aug 2019 | | 78 RPMTom Ennis - Irish Reels (1917) | You can hear this being played here...
Fokeman 31st Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMF. Lemarque - A Paris / Buy My A Zeppelin | Yves Montand sings the A side on 78rpm disc here...
Fokeman 31st Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMF. Lemarque - A Paris / Buy My A Zeppelin | Yes, I was aware that it was Ewan MacColl. It is already linked to his discography.
Fokeman 30th Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMSean Mooney - My Father's Cabin / If We Only Had Old Ireland Over Here (1956) | Also released on a 7" single in circa 1961 see here...
Fokeman 24th Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMMichael J. Cashin - The Kerry Reel / Shannon Shores (1930) | That's good, it shows that my research dating system worked, albeit possibly by taking more time.
Fokeman 23rd Jul 2019 | | 78 RPMMichael J. Cashin - The Kerry Reel / Shannon Shores (1930) | I've taken the date of this record from the pattern of the label and the catalogue number. This seems to be right in the middle of the B3000 series, many of which were released during 1930. If anyone disagrees violently please let me know and I'll change the date.
