|
Graham7 3rd Mar 2013 | | 78 RPMBilly Cotton - Horsey, Horsey / Maybelle, Maybelle (1937) | Just added this and used 1937 as date as per the other Rex we have.
Wikipedia, and thus much of the internet, claim Horsey, Horsey was written in 1938, but I'm sticking to 1937.
Billy Cotton's earliest record here thus far?

I reckon this too dates to around 1929.

Graham7 2nd Mar 2013 | | 78 RPMJack Payne - Jack Payne Himself / Say It With Music | mgthomas has a list of 3½" Crystalate records Imperial Minis, which may help?

Graham7 2nd Mar 2013 | | 78 RPMNoel Coward - Mad Dogs And Englishmen / Let's Say Goodbye (1932) | Label variation added. B.4269.
This was one of my favourites when I first started playing records when I was little.
Pretty sure this is the same version (US Victor label)

|
Graham7 1st Mar 2013 | | 78 RPMThe Four Lads - Gilly Gilly Ossenfeffer Katzenellen Bogen By The Sea / I Hear It Everywhere (1954) | Max Bygraves had the UK hit version of this, The Four Lads had the US hit.
Glad I've got this version.
(not sure that this YT is exactly what's on my record, can't play it yet)

Graham7 25th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMVictor Male Chorus - Land Of Hope And Glory / The Clock (1927) | Matrix#: 4671 A33116Δ / 4683 A34544Δ
Release date and A side based on Gramophone Feb 1927 (not quite confident enough to add Feb yet).
Bit more research reveals:
Land Of Hope And Glory was recorded 15 Sep 1925 at Camden, New Jersey. It was take 11 (of 12), from the 3rd recording session. Only take 1 (30 Jul) and take 9 were also retained. All recordings from 1 Sep were destroyed. Full recording info here. Issued on Victor as Victor 19783 Nov 1925.
Associated Glee Clubs Of America (1,000 Male Voices) recorded at their performance in New York City ( 6 Feb 1926 at 71st Regiment Armory )
It does not appear to have been released in the USA.
Phew... 50p well spent?
Must find a machine to play these fascinating objects.
|
Graham7 18th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMNorman Grant - Life's Desire / Carissima (1955) | That's me finished adding 78s (at least until I find some more!).
This one has a confusing matrix: ESO.751-1 / ESO.750-2, so I hope I've got the sides the right way round.
|
Graham7 18th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMBill Snyder - Bewitched / Drifting Sands (1950) | Based on comments (The Toad's "This single was first released as a 78 in 1950 (R 3302)") on 45cat, I've added 1950 for the date on this.
|
Graham7 17th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMBing Crosby - Beautiful Dreamer / You Are My Heart's Delight (1940) | It's certainly made my weekend, zabadak.
It was actually the shop manager who saw me looking at them, and suggested £3.99 the lot. One was snapped in half, 3 or 4 have chunks missing, a few look playable (after a good clean), and I was well chuffed with my one sider from 1910. Some nice covers also.
Most now added, last 4 to do tomorrow.

Graham7 17th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMMr. Stewart Gardner - Rolling Down To Rio (1910) | Found it in New Gramophone Records May 1910. (Thanks scrough)
Its playing speed is 81 rpm. Cost 3/6 (17½ p).
"I'd love to roll to Rio, some day before I'm old"

Graham7 17th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMMr. Stewart Gardner - Rolling Down To Rio (1910) | I've just seen it on CHARM myself (via the useful links page in the forum).
I'm now browsing the BL catalogues.
|
Graham7 17th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMJay Whidden And His New Midnight Follies Band - Chinese Moon / Moonlight On The Ganges (1926) | Adding this I noticed Speed 80 under Foxtrot on each side.
Is this record supposed to be played at 80 rpm?
ps. Just answered my own question. Yes it is. See here.
|
Graham7 17th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMMr. Stewart Gardner - Rolling Down To Rio (1910) | Ooh this looks interesting. The blank b side is great.
Tried looking this up, pretty sure it's the oldest record I have, possibly dates from 1909?
|
Graham7 17th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMBilly Cotton - All Hands On Deck / Good Luck, Good Health, God Bless You (1951) | Adding this I notice that several Billy Cotton And His Band records are credited to Billy Cotton only. Which is it to be?
EDIT(14 Mar) Billy Cotton it is.
|
Graham7 16th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMSidney Torch - The Kiss / Meandering (1953) | I See Stars !!!
10,000 images in 78RPM World now!
|
Graham7 16th Feb 2013 | | 78 RPMBing Crosby - Beautiful Dreamer / You Are My Heart's Delight (1940) | I took pity on a charity shop today, mainly because I couldn't find anything else to buy, and cleared out their knackered 78s, about 40 of 'em. Heavy bag for £4!
Half of them already here, like this, for which I've added a label variation, the rest will be added in the next day or so. Then they have an uncertain future.
|
Graham7 31st Jan 2013 | | 78 RPMBing Crosby And Louis Armstrong - Gone Fishin' / Moonlight Bay (1951) | Reissued 1979 on 7"
|
Graham7 10th Jan 2013 | | 78 RPMWardell Gray Quartet - Dell's Bells / Easy Swing (1952) | This looks like a tax code stamp.
The NT code dates this particular copy to between 16 April 1953 and 27 October 1955.

Graham7 8th Jan 2013 | | 78 RPMFrank Sinatra - Chicago / All The Way (1957) | Label variation (later pressing?) added.
