han enderman 15th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMPaul Whiteman - Reaching For Some-One (And Not Finding Anyone There) / When My Dreams Come True (1929) | Co 1822-D - Added a pair of images of the 2nd pressing (including cleaner A-side).

han enderman 14th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Dorsey Brothers - Dixie Dawn / I Must Have That Man (1928) | Od A-221110 - Lange, Deutsche 78er Discography, 2e Auflage p.33, lists the A.221000 Serie as German export 1927-35, and lists this Odeon under its Venuti title, but not under Dorsey. Text is normally in English. Some are Made in England (by Parlophone). - French Odeons say Made in France or something like that at 6. Lange also lists the A-189000 Serie as German export, and says that several foreign A-series were pressed in Berlin, like the French A-160000 series between 1926-30.
I think that the French royalty stamp on A-189267 indicates it was imported from Germany. Earlier printings in this A-189000 series have the Lindström "L" in a square on the labels.
Lotz (Bilderlexikon) says that the export series have an A-prefix with 6-digit Cat.nrs.

han enderman 9th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMTed Wallace And His Campus Boys - I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling / Jericho (1929) | Co 1833-D - label images of 4 variants added; the 5th is already present. There are 2 regular variants (#1-2), with different bottom legend. The 3 West Coast variants differ in bottom legend and layout of the credit. I think that the labels already present (...12/14) are the last West Coast edition (#W3). Note that the regular edition has "&" in the credit, while the West Coast variants first have "and", then in the revised layout "AND". Evidently to make them different from the regular issue. Note also the small vertical line in the bottom upper line at 5 (ANDI), that only occurs on West Coast label blanks.

han enderman 7th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Vernons - Lonesome And Sorry / I Don't Care What You Used To Be (1926) | EBW 4463 - Now 4 label variants are present, of which the chronological order is most likely:
#1 - Hough mentioned in bottom legend. Descriptions: Fox Trot Duet / Waltz Song. [...89/90]
#2 - Descr.: Song Fox Trot / Duet. [...32/33]
#3 - Hough not mentioned. Title A changed (large serifed font with &). [...42; A/B youtube]
#4 - Credit in upper case. Descr B in upper case (A-side not seen). [...43]
EBW 4501 is the last label known to me with "J.E. Hough Ltd Edison Bell Works" at bottom in a regular series; from EBW 4503 on it becomes "Edison Bell, Limited". The use of Hough labels for 4545/47 suggests they found some old stock.

han enderman 6th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMAl Jolson - Scandinavia (Sing Dose Song And Make Dose Music) / Funeral Blues (Eat Custard And You'll Never Break A Tooth) (1921) | Co A-3382 - I have images with GJ codes in the range A-3381-3393; meaning unknown. Last BV code (i.e. the normal series) I have seen is A-3379, so maybe it was replaced here by GJ, followed by CP & BP. An EV/BP coupling is known for A-3421, but this almost looks like an error.

han enderman 6th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Dorsey Brothers - Dixie Dawn / I Must Have That Man (1928) | Od A-221110 - This is the German release of Parlophone R-280, which also has this Eddie Lang credit. Orig. issue of B is OK 41133, as by Joe Venuti And His New Yorkers. Rust wrongly lists the reverse of 41133 (Doin' Things) for A-221110 and omits this Odeon under Dixie Dawn (Dorsey Bros 22 May 1928, OK 41050).
|
han enderman 6th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Home Towners - Coquette / Down Where The Sun Goes Down (1928) | Duophone D-4019 - Label variant added, which uses a narrower font and has a different layout of the B title. I assume it is an earlier variant that was replaced by the better readable normal font. A-side image ID 1445196 is a less clear image of this label type, but possibly is dark purple instead of black. I think purple was the colour for the orig. issues at that time.

han enderman 6th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMCalifornia Ramblers - Magnolia / Zula Wail (1927) | Broadway 1081 - A/B images of 2nd edition added; 1st & 3rd ed. are already present. Note misspelling Zula Wail for Zulu Wail on all editions. Recorded 27 May 1927, with vocal on side A by Ed Kirkeby as Ted Wallace. - The 3 editions couple 2 label variants, which differ in the mention of the vocal:
ed.1 - both sides state "Vocal Chorus Ted Wallace" (B-side incorrect),
ed.2 - wrong correction, now both sides omit the Vocal (A-side incorrect),
ed.3 - correctly only the A-side mentions the vocal.
Images should be rearranged, with Leedon's edition 3 as last.

han enderman 4th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMCriterion Male Quartet - Silver Threads Among The Gold / Love's Old Sweet Song (1927) | Bell 1116 - label images added, from archive, where the music is available. Also added the A-side of another printing, with smaller distance between the 3 text lines (similar on the bad image of its B-side). B-side credit is "... Quartet" (should be corrected).
|
han enderman 4th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMBob Thomas - Morning Will Come / Ten Thousand Years From Now (1923) | Bell P-234 - Another difference between the blank and Pan label types is the cat.nr. On the earlier type the P prefix is followed by a dash (P-234), which is omitted on the Pan labels (P234). Also the bottom legend and the fonts are different, and the description at 3 changes from upper case to lower case. Conclusion: everything is different.

han enderman 4th Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMBob Thomas - Morning Will Come / Ten Thousand Years From Now (1923) | Bell P-234 - added label images of 1st edition A-side and 2nd edition both sides (from archive, where the music is available). The 1st ed. is the last release in this series with the Bell plain label; Bell P-235 has Pan pictured at 12, as has the 2nd ed. here.

han enderman 2nd Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMGertrude Lawrence And Noel Coward - Love Scene From "Private Lives" Act 1 / Scene From "Private Lives" Act 2 (1930) | HMV C-2043 - the colour logo images are the original issue and should be moved up. The images from the later copy show 2 label types, with "Made in England" (at 3) in italics (#2) or in CAPITALS (#3).
|
han enderman 2nd Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMFletcher Henderson - Clarinet Marmalade / Hot Mustard (1927) | Br 3406 - West Coast (#W) labels added, plus an image of the A-side showing take number 89 at 5. The Notes are inaccurate. This issue contains the coupling 89/84, as do all other releases with these titles except Br 40886 (export) which has 88 (from Hendersonia). Odd to see a Br mx.nr coupled with a Voc mx.nr. - Previous mxs 78-81, recorded the same day, are by Red Nichols.
|
han enderman 2nd Sep 2024 | | 78 RPMOriginal Washboard Beaters - Yale Rhythm / Lazy Weather (1927) | Par R-3381 - Added a better readable image of side B. "The Goofus Washboards" are "The Goofus Five", 15 Jun 1927. Surprisingly the pseudonym is not mentioned in Rust, JR6. The earlier R-3000 series numbers were duplicated when the R-100 series had reached R-3000 in the 1950s. A well-known example is R-3257 by Arthur Sims (Soapstick Blues) and by Humphrey Lyttelton (Memphis Blues) in the 1950 Super Rhythm-Style Series.

han enderman 29th Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMPerry Como - Merry Christmas Music (1947) | Vic Album P-161 - a copy of the 1st edition of the album is at present on ebay. 2 labels are shown (not Bethlehem) and these do not show the album number. That is, however, on the image of the album spine.
|
han enderman 29th Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMPerry Como - Merry Christmas Music (1947) | The Perry Como website says:
"Surprisingly, it's not generally known that the original recordings for Perry's first Christmas album date back to 1946 when it was released as a 4 record 78-rpm disc Musical Smart Set. All of these songs were recorded in August, 1946, but one song, "O Little Town of Bethlehem", was later dropped from the set and replaced by "White Christmas" recorded in 1947. In 1956, the revised collection was combined with another collection, "Around the Christmas Tree", recorded in 1953, under the original 1946 album title, to form Perry's first full RCA Victor 12" LP Christmas album."
Thus there are 2 versions of the 78 rpm album, of which the first was released in 1946, as could be expected from the cat. numbers.
"Bethlehem" is on youtube, with a good label image (can be copied?). It omits the album nr on the label, but this occurs more often at the time, as I have an image of 20-2081 without album nr, but present in P-169 (Freddy Martin).
In discogs is the 1946 Canadian release, a copy of the orig. US record.

han enderman 25th Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMJoe Loss - In The Mood / There's A New Apple Tree (1941) | RZ G-24399 - images of (presumably) first pressing (#1) added (should be moved up). The 3 variants have the same main label type, but a different text layout. A#1 has "Arr." with capital A, which is changed to "arr." on later variants. A#1/2 have "(In Strict Dance Tempo)" mainly in lower case, as was the case on the slightly earlier G-23862. I guess that the label with this legend in upper case is the last variant.

han enderman 25th Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMLouis Armstrong And His All Stars - Swing Music 1947 Series, No. 735 & 736 (1947) | HMV B-9583 - added 2 variants of the A-side: #1 (ST) is the orig. 1947 issue, and #2 (which shows DT on its reverse) is the reprint. The copy already present (...65/66) couples A#1(DT)/B#2, and may well be the first pressing of the 2nd edition, using up the old #1 labels on one side. The ST tax (Apr 1946-Nov 1947) was for half a year replaced by LT, and then in Apr 1948 by DT. - The ST image can be moved up.

han enderman 22nd Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMFrank Crumit - Pretty Little Dear / Get Away Old Man, Get Away (1926) | Vic 20137 - Added 6 label images of 3 label types (#1, #2o, #3) (#1o & #2 already present). Type #2 is a correction of type #1 (see description; Frank Banta added) and apparently remaining #1 labels were coupled with #2 labels. I have seen A#1/B#2, A#2/B#1 and (on discogs) Oakland A#1o/B2o.
|
han enderman 22nd Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMSi Higgins And His Sodbusters - Bless You! Sister / The Prune Song (1928) | Diva 2739-G - label images (mediocre) added. - Rust (JR6) says that on Harmony 739-H = Diva 2739-G Sister is by CR, and Prune by the Night Club Orchestra, a Reser group.
|
han enderman 22nd Aug 2024 | | 78 RPMJimmie Rodgers - Blue Yodel No. 4 (California Blues) / Waiting For A Train (1929) | RZ T-5380 - The label type with a 2-line legend above the label name is the earliest type here (and can be moved up). A 2-line legend occurs also on the preceding RZ type, with green lower half.
