78 RPM
Kyu Sakamoto - Sukiyaki (Ue O Muite Aruko) / Anoko-No Namae-Wa Nantenkana (1963)
This was issued as a 45rpm disc in South Africa and I assume that as a result there would have been no 78rpm version. I have yet to come across a disc issued on both 78rpm and 45rpm in Southern Africa thus far ...

Art Hickman's Orchestra - Hold Me / Dance It Again With Me (1920)
interesting. Chart positions in the POP MEMORIES book before 1940 must be taken with a pinch of salt it seems. Perhaps Tim Brooks could come up with his own publication with a different name which is more accurate.

Elvis Presley With The Jordanaires - Wild In The Country / I Feel So Bad (1961)
This was in the Top 10 in South Africa (the list published at the time in the USA's Billboard magazine) in October 1961. I assume that the general production of 78rpm singles was ceased not long after this release (although some 78s in the black music market were issued until as late as 1968)

Al Jolson - You Made Me Love You / Pullman Porters Parade (1913)
this was the top selling disc in America from 04 October 1913 for 7 weeks according to the book POP MEMORIES 1890-1954. America's #1 this week 100 years ago! It was the 5th of 91 records charted by Al from 1912 to 1948 in the USA

Side A was a small hit in the USA, a composition originating from South Africa

Del Shannon - Runaway / Jody (1961)
My scanner doesn't scan so well with LPs and 78s as the vinyl is not as close to the glass.

RUNAWAY was shown in the Top 3 in South Africa in July 1961 in the chart then published in BILLBOARD Magazine. I am not sure if it was also available as a 7" single 45rpm at that time.

Was RUNAWAY released elsewhere in 1961 as a 78rpm disc, I wonder? Perhaps Bigtom can enlighten us?

African Dance Band Of The Cold Storage Commission Of Southern Rhodesia - Karekwangu / Skokiaan
this is seemingly from 1952. Strange that the tune which became an international hit is on the B side here. And the spelling error in the composer's name (correct spelling MUSARURWA) was introduced on the South African pressing.

Cliff Richard And The Drifters - Mean Streak / Never Mind (1959)
added cleaner labels with respect to RAKAttack

78 RPM
The Johnston Brothers - Skokiaan / No Heart At All (1954)
the mis-spelling of the surname of the composer (correct spelling Musarurwa) always irks me. One of many cover versions

78 RPM
Cliff Richard - Outsider / Blue Moon (1962)
nice one. Since the inception of 45worlds the 78rpm singles have become the most popular here, accounting for 36,36% of uploaded items to date, as against 34,64% for CD singles, 26.04% for 12" singles and a mere 2,95% for cassette singles. May the fun continue ...

another 78 added from South Africa

78 RPM
Elvis Presley - Wooden Heart / G. I. Blues (1961)
another 78 from South Africa by "The King". See they printed the wrong catalogue number on side A and overprinted it to correct the error. My original wonky scan is shown on the comments page but in the bowels of the entry the two images have been cropped -- more power to the mods! :)

Ralph Marterie - Skokiaan / Crazy 'Bout Lollipop (1954)
actually the correct spelling of August's surname is MUSARURWA which may have been shortened to MSARURWA which is a fairly common shona language surname in Zimbabwe where the composer hailed from (known as Rhodesia back in the day). No G in the surname. Must have been a typo way back when.

Elvis Presley - Blue Suede Shoes / Tutti Frutti (1956)
@zabadak - never the twain shall meet? I had a pile of albums + 78s leaning against a cupboard door about a year ago and the pile was knocked over fairly gently and one Elvis 78 from S Africa broke into pieces as a result ...

@zabadak - enjoy! I hope to add some more prontissimo :)

Roy Orbison - Only The Lonely (Know How I Feel) / Here Comes That Song Again (1960)
I have no southern african chart lists from as early as 1960 but suspect this was a popular one at the time

Märta Ahlberg - Någonstans I Sverige / En Liten Stjärna Föll (1940)
thanks. There's a version of it on video by Anni-Frid Lyngstad. I think it was included on a DVD compilation of hers a few years ago

no COMPOSER details ...

The Canadians - Zambesi / Only You (And You Alone) (1956)
Third composer of Side A is De Waal. One of many cover versions of the South African composition ZAMBESI. I wonder if the composer was inspired to come up with it after the success of SKOKIAAN from up north in Rhodesia

Elvis Presley - One Night / I Got Stung (1959)
i've come across a number of Elvis 78s made in South Africa in recent years here in ZW. I suspect they didn't manufacture them in ZW at the time but merely imported from SA. At least 3 of them broke in transit to Europe where I had sent them! :(
