LaurenceD SUBS 3rd Sep 2020 | | 78 RPMLanny Ross - I Get Ideas / In The Cool, Cool, Cool Of The Evening | These all seem to be covers of hits from 1951.
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMFolke Lindahl - Trommelvalsen (Drum Waltz) / Halve Kaede (Half Chain) (1950) | I found an archive of the Let's Dance newsletter here. No mention of this item, but I see that releases 79 & 80 are mentioned in the Record Finder column in the March 1951 issue. So this is probably from 1950 or 1951.
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMArt Carney - Sheeesh, What A Grouch! / She Never Left The Table (1955) | Note that there are 3 'e's in "Sheeesh" here, though if you look around the web this song title is almost always spelled with "Sheesh".
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMPedro Bugarin - O Mi Pa-Pa / Amor Secreto (Secret Love) (1952) | Thank for that link Mike, very informative; though I'm skeptical about a 1952 date for this release, because AFAIK the first recording of Secret Love did not appear until late 1953.
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMPedro Bugarin - O Mi Pa-Pa / Amor Secreto (Secret Love) (1952) | Considering the two hits covered here, this was probably released sometime in 1954.
The address for this label (3703 N. 7th St., Phoenix AZ) was also used by the Ramco and Old Timer labels in the late 1950s.

LaurenceD SUBS 18th Aug 2020 | | 78 RPM[no artist listed] - Golden '49er Theme Song | I'm curious Wackywecords, what size is this disc?
(BTW I added an image for a 1949 advert from Esquire)
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMJim Wynn's Bobalibans - Butter For My Roll / Gal (1945) | Thanks Mike; based on that listing I've adjusted Gilt-Edge 531 to 1945 as well.
LaurenceD SUBS 16th Aug 2020 | | 78 RPMJim Wynn's Bobalibans - Butter For My Roll / Gal (1945) | Not 100% sure about the 1946 release date; more precise info welcomed
LaurenceD SUBS 15th Jul 2020 | | 78 RPMErrol Garner - Rosalie / Everything Happens To Me (1949) | After some more digging around, it does seem that Garner's work with Gaskin and Smith is most likely from 1949, so I've adjusted the date.
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Jul 2020 | | 78 RPMErrol Garner - Rosalie / Everything Happens To Me (1949) | Does anyone have some info about this Portrait label? I only know of two releases, with all 4 sides coming from the same Erroll Garner session (Leonard Gaskin on bass, Charlie Smith on drums).
ARLD lists it as circa 1945, but jazzdisco.org dates these sessions as being Aug 1949. I'm setting this to 1945 for now...
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Jul 2020 | | 78 RPMHamp Hawes - Bopera Part 7 / Unfinished Bopera (1947) | Moved Mike's cleaner label scan to the top, though I cannot say which format may have been earlier.
This particular bunch of jazz records that I acquired are fairly clean as far as the playing surfaces go, but the previous owner had a habit of affixing those hole-reinforcement stickers onto the record labels, presumably to keep them from slipping.
LaurenceD SUBS 1st Jul 2020 | | 78 RPMTeddy Edwards - Teddy's Tune / Wonderful Work (1948) | Sounds likely, Mike; set accordingly
LaurenceD SUBS 1st Jul 2020 | | 78 RPMTeddy Edwards - Teddy's Tune / Wonderful Work (1948) | This Billboard ad from April 16, 1949 lists four Teddy Edwards releases in the 25000 series. I wonder if the 26000 series was a continuation of that series. I have found no specific info on this release/series so far...
LaurenceD SUBS 28th Jun 2020 | | 78 RPMLee Konitz With Gerry Mulligan Quartet - Lover Man / Lady Be Good (1953) | Something went wrong with the composer credit on "Lover Man". Same thing happened on the 45 rpm EP release.
LaurenceD SUBS 29th May 2020 | | 78 RPMFrankie And Her Boys - Not On The First Night / The Laziest Gal In Town (1946) | A somewhat misleading artist credit, as these are recordings from 1940 by Frank Trumbauer and his Orchestra with Fredda Gibson (aka Georgia Gibbs) on vocals. Sides previously released on:
- Varsity 8223 "The Laziest Gal In Town"
- Varsity 8225 "Not On The First Nite Baby"
LaurenceD SUBS 27th May 2020 | | 78 RPMFrank Luther - Magic Hearts Of Candy / Hoppy Toad / The Hootie Owls / Wallie Woodpecker (1933) | On each side, the two tracks are continuous with no break.
LaurenceD SUBS 23rd May 2020 | | 78 RPMVivian Marshall - Forever Amber (Wish I Were Back Between The Covers) Part I / Forever Amber (Wish I Were Back Between The Covers) Part II (1948) | Tentatively dating this one as 1948. The record is a response to the film Forever Amber, released in October 1947. Despite the fact that Kathleen Winsor's novel was cleaned up somewhat for the screenplay adaptation, the National Legion of Decency condemned the film for its "immoral" content, and a few weeks after the initial showing the film was pulled and re-edited to pacify the protestors.
In this recording comedienne Vivian Marshall speaks for the lead character, Amber St. Clair, lamenting the fact that her bedroom activities were omitted from the film.
BB Jan 10, 1948 In Short (p.35): Vivian Marshall, chirp at the Kona Club, San Francisco, cut a record for Tag called "What I Did Between Covers I Can't Do on the Screen"

LaurenceD SUBS 21st May 2020 | | 78 RPMDeep River Boys - What Did He Say (The Mumble Song) / I'm Sorry I Didn't Say I'm Sorry (1947) | The a-side was apparently inspired by the Mumbles character from the Dick Tracy comic strip. That character was introduced in 1947, and was seemingly killed off in December of that year (but somehow reappeared in 1955).

LaurenceD SUBS 18th Apr 2020 | | 78 RPMRudy Vallée And His Connecticut Yankees - Rudy Vallée Surprises, No. 1 / Rudy Vallée Surprises, No. 2 (1938) | The A-side (Red Stanley) features parodies of Sweet Sue and Dinah.
The B-side (Cyril Smith) features the routine known as "How Fights Start In Saloons".
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Apr 2020 | | 78 RPMEarl "Fatha" Hines and his "new sounds" - I Don't Hear Sweet Music Anymore / Almost Like Being In Love (1954) | The Varieties were: Gene Reed, Dicky Wells, Leroy Harris and Jerome Richardson.
This Nocturne label released various LPs and EPs. As far as I know, this is their only single.
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Mar 2020 | | 78 RPMSpike Jones And His City Slickers - All I Want For Christmas (Is My Two Front Teeth) / Happy New Year (1948) | Looks good fredhoyt. I wonder if "the one, the only, the original" is in reference to some other version of the song. I'm not aware of any others prior to Nat Cole's recording in 1949.
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Mar 2020 | | 78 RPMPete Peterson With Scott Seely Trio - Kimebo-Kimebo / Even The Angels Cried (1952) | I'll admit defeat, cannot find any reference to this label.

LaurenceD SUBS 14th Mar 2020 | | 78 RPMLeo Diamond - Poor Butterfly / This Love Of Mine (1947) | Probably released in 1947
LaurenceD SUBS 26th Feb 2020 | | 78 RPMTommy Dorsey Family (Mountain Branch) - Friendship / Chattanooga Choo Choo (1947) | According to the Aug 7 Billboard ad, the a-side features Jo Stafford and The Pied Pipers (not credited on label).
There is a story concerning the Hollywood Hillbillies track. It seems that Victor recorded their version of "Tim-Tayshun" (along with Chattanooga Choo Choo) to compete with the popular Red Ingle recording on Capitol 412. Catalog number 20-2336 was assigned and promo copies were sent to DJs on June 12, 1947. Within one day, Capitol contacted Victor with a strong warning, and the release was pulled. So apparently, promotional copies of that release did exist, although I have yet to see one. I'm guessing that the b-side on this release is the same recording as that on 20-2336. Incidentally on the runout of this b-side, it looks like two of the digits were scratched out, e.g. "20-23▓▓B" and overwritten with "55".

LaurenceD SUBS 14th Jan 2020 | | 78 RPMMartin Y Malena - Amigo Amigo / Por Una Joven | Martin Becerra (José Martín Becerra Ochoa) and Magdalena (or Marta Elena) “Malena” Pérez Tejada
LaurenceD SUBS 7th Jan 2020 | | 78 RPMThe Saltairs - Good Night, Mister Moon / I May Learn To Forget Some Day | From San Francisco Cable Car Chorus - archive:
San Francisco, as Northern California's "Mother of Barbershopping," gave birth to another important addition to the barbershopping family in 1954. On May 15 of that year Marin Chapter was awarded its charter by the San Francisco Chapter, at Marin's first parade of quartets. Does anyone remember that the Marin chorus was first called the "Saltairs?"
LaurenceD SUBS 14th Dec 2019 | | 78 RPMNickelodeon - Ghost Town Melodies | Pretty tough to date this, as the ghost town attraction was around from the 1940s and for decades thereafter, and things didn't change much over time. I went there as a toddler around the late 1950s and have a vague recollection of those 'nickelodeon' machines. They had a number of these band piano contraptions, which were similar to player pianos, but included additional instruments to create the effect of a one-man band.
Sad to say, but by now most if not all of them have fallen into disrepair and have been auctioned off.
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Dec 2019 | | 78 RPMBenny Goodman Sextet - Flying Home / Rose Room (In Sunny Roseland) (1939) | Note: "Homeward Bound" on V Disc 731 is an alternate take of "Flying Home" from the same session, also featuring a solo by Charlie Christian.
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Nov 2019 | | 78 RPMBob Crosby - On The Atchison, Topeka And Santa Fe / On The Night Train To Memphis (1945) | Second of two releases of "On The Atchison" on RM 114. The first featured an additional Bob Crosby track (with Peggy Lee) on the B-side, "It's Anybody's Spring".
Some discussion about why Peggy Lee is on these releases here
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Nov 2019 | | 78 RPMJohnny Walker - Personally, I Love You / Under The Spell Of Your Kiss (1931) | Benny Goodman can be heard on "Personally"; there is a short clarinet solo near the end.
