LaurenceD SUBS 9th Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMNew Orleans Rhythm Kings - (Oh Suzanna) Dust Off That Old Pianna / Since We Fell Out Of Love (1935) | A revival (of sorts) of the NORK by George Brunies, the only original member involved.
I found the lineup for these sessions on a 1974 LP "New Orleans Rhythm Kings 1934-1935":
- Muggsy Spanier, cornet
- George Brunies, trombone
- Eddie Miller, clarinet
- Terry Shand, piano
- Benny Pottle, bass
- Gene Krupa, drums

LaurenceD SUBS 1st Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMAce Newell - Ovaltine / Dirty Gertie Glynn (1942) | Note to member Groovy: I changed the cat# to bring it in line with the other disc from this set. Also, I adjusted the release date from 1950 to 1942, as that is the date suggested by David J. Diehl on The BLUE PAGES.

LaurenceD SUBS 1st Aug 2015 | | 78 RPMAce Newell - She Tickled The Gentleman's Fancy / Is It True About Chinese Women? (1942) | This disc came paired with sides 8C/8D in a generic Party Records album cover. I have included scans of one of the albums; I have a couple of these covers, they're both the same.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 1st Jul 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Charleston Chasers - Farewell Blues / My Gal Sal (1928) | Charleston Chasers was a pseudonym used by various outfits. This grouping consisted of:
Red Nichols, trumpet, dir
Miff Mole, trombone
Jimmy Dorsey, clarinet, alto sax
Arthur Schutt, piano, arr
Dick McDonough, banjo, guitar
Vic Berton, drums
Joe Tarto, tuba

LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jun 2015 | | 78 RPMTennessee Ernie And Joe "Fingers" Carr - Tailor Made Woman / Bright Lights And Blonde Haired Women (1951) | Sorry, I have no idea why this hybrid release was assembled.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jun 2015 | | 78 RPMJulius Chabala - Chusi Mamma / Seni | I found some references to Julius Chabala in Los Angeles periodicals (The Daily Trojan, California Eagle) ranging from 1955-1957. He was from North Rhodesia, and performed African folk songs at various colleges.
The Santa Monica City College Corsair (Feb 1957) states that he was a pre-med student at SMCC, also that he played drums and sang, and mentioned two of the songs on this disc.

LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jun 2015 | | 78 RPMArthur Prysock - I'll Always Be With You / All Of Me (1947) | I was not able to quite pin down the year for this; but based on neighboring Signature issues, it's probably from 1949 or 1950.
In Oct 1946, Arthur Prysock released four sides on the Haven label:
- Haven 3000: Makin' A Fool Out Of Me / I'll Always Be With You **
- Haven 3002: New Jelly Blues / All Of Me
They seem to be rather scarce. It appears that those four sides eventually turned up on Signature -- on this entry along with:
- Signature 32014: Makin' A Fool Out Of Me / Jelly Jelly *
* not sure about the exact titles on the labels, could not find a copy to confirm.
** corrected title, thanks to wcs270

LaurenceD SUBS 12th Jun 2015 | | 78 RPMElvis Presley - Good Rockin' Tonight / I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine | Another colored vinyl boot from the set of five...
|
LaurenceD SUBS 30th May 2015 | | 78 RPMBob Atcher - Mountain Maw / Signed, Sealed And Delivered (1948) | That's a lot of releases for one week!
|
LaurenceD SUBS 30th May 2015 | | 78 RPMKen Griffin - Put Your Arms Around Me Honey / Margie (1951) | The A-side co-composer would be correctly spelled Albert Von Tilzer.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 30th May 2015 | | 78 RPMBob Atcher - Mountain Maw / Signed, Sealed And Delivered (1948) | Could not find a BB listing for this cat#, but neighboring releases suggest mid-1948. Oddly, there's an ad (Jun 19, 1948, p.62) which lists this pairing under "latest releases" but with the old 37991 number.
Which reminds me, does someone here know when the 20000 country series made its debut?
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th May 2015 | | 78 RPMBabs Gonzales - The Be-Bop Santa Claus / Manhattan Fable (1954) | These sides were leased to Essex for nationwide release as #377.
"Be-Bop Santa Claus" was later sold to King and released as #4836, b/w "Watch Them Resolutions".
|
LaurenceD SUBS 19th May 2015 | | 78 RPMFour Blazes - Please Send Her Back To Me / Stop Boogie Woogie (1952) | The matrix number (1025) shown on the A-side label is incorrect. The runout has the correct number: URC-1125
|
LaurenceD SUBS 17th May 2015 | | 78 RPMLittle David - Macayo / Cryin' Blues (1952) | Thanks for that info, hiphop. I've corrected the error in my original comment, had my RPM #s mixed up.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 16th May 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Dave Brubeck Trio - Singing In The Rain / I'll Remember April (1950) | It appears that the logo for the new Fantasy label was 'borrowed' from the cover of a science fiction magazine. See this page for more information. There was apparently a complaint, because following one more single release the Fantasy logo was revised.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 16th May 2015 | | 78 RPMDave Brubeck Trio - Laura / Indiana (1949) | Dave's first record release. Note the misspelling of co-composer David Raksin as Raskin.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 5th May 2015 | | 78 RPMNorman Granz' Jazz At The Philharmonic - How High The Moon Part 1 / How High The Moon Part 2 (1948) | Sadly, the Syria Mosque was torn down in August 1991 to make way for a parking lot.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Apr 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Jacks - Smack Dab In The Middle / Why Don't You Write Me? (1955) | One of those situations where the designated B side took off unexpectedly.
(I linked The Jacks and The Cadets together. Maybe it should be "see also", but they are the same group)
|
LaurenceD SUBS 9th Apr 2015 | | 78 RPMThe Watchmen - The Gorgeous Gruen / Preachin' Blues (1947) | I don't know what B&W's '300' series was intended to be, maybe for novelty items. Number 301 is a Jan Garber release; beyond that I'm not aware of others in that series.
"Preachin' Blues" is actually a reissue of the A-side of B&W #11, originally credited to the Ray Stokes Trio.
As for "The Gorgeous Gruen", it's a rather suggestive song about a guy who likes to bestow gift watches upon his lady friends. And it sounds like that's not all he's giving them...

LaurenceD SUBS 26th Feb 2015 | | 78 RPMSlim Gaillard And His Flat-Foot-Floogee Boys - A-Well-A-Take-'Em-A-Joe (Crap Shooter's Jive) / Chicken Rhythm (1939) | Looks good fixbutte, and I see where I erred on the recording date. While browsing the sessionography, by mistake I grabbed the date from the session that followed the Sept 15 one.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 25th Feb 2015 | | 78 RPMSeger Ellis - When It's Sleepy Time Down South / No Jug, No Jazz (1941) | Not sure what happened, but it looks as if someone spilled cleaning fluid on one of the labels.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Feb 2015 | | 78 RPMKing Cole Trio - I'm Lost / Pitchin' Up A Boogie (1944) | I moved the release date back to 1944 on this one. Excelsior's usage of different cat numbers for each side seems to have confused the folks at Billboard. Their Oct 21 1944 listing mistakenly assigned Capitol 165 to this release, but that was Benny Carter's version of I'm Lost. Then the Nov 4 listing used the (incorrect) matrix number 2986.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 31st Jan 2015 | | 78 RPMSarah Vaughan - The Lord's Prayer / Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child (1950) | This is a reissue of Musicraft 525. I suspect that it was resurrected to compete with Perry Como's version of The Lord's Prayer.
MGM acquired the catalog of the defunct Musicraft label around August 1949.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 30th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMRed Ingle And The Natural Seven - Temptation (Tim-Tayshun) / (I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons (I Love You) For Seventy Mental Reasons (1947) | Added alt labels; B-side title has "Fer Seventy Mental Reasons"
|
LaurenceD SUBS 18th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMGlen Hurlburt - Cable Car Concerto / Rhapsody Of Fisherman's Wharf (1947) | These green label scans are a pretty accurate representation of my copy (maybe a bit dark), and I've run across another one that is about the same. Never seen a bluish one, but it could exist; subsequent pressings may have been produced at a different source.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 13th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMJudy Garland - That Old Black Magic / Poor Little Rich Girl (1943) | Added cleaner labels, with acknowledgement to ChaZarad.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 10th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMAudrey Marsh - D-U-Z Does Everything | Audrey Marsh would sing the DUZ detergent jingle for broadcasts of the soap opera The Road Of Life. I think that this would have been for the radio version of the program.
|
LaurenceD SUBS 6th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMKid Ory's Creole Jazz Band - Careless Love / Do What Ory Say (1946) | Number 5 out of 8 releases on Nesuhi Ertegun's Crescent label.
Later reissued on Jazz Man 25, and Good Time Jazz 81
See this wiki page for more info about Crescent.

LaurenceD SUBS 6th Dec 2014 | | 78 RPMDelta Rhythm Boys - Dry Bones / September Song (1947) | Sorry, my copy is missing the 4th disc.
