rhythmdog 30th Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Orioles - What Are You Doing New Year's Eve / (It's Gonna Be A) Lonely Christmas (1949) | "Lonely Christmas" was first issued in 1948 as the B side of Jubilee 5001. In November of 1949, this pairing was first released. It was then re-released for Christmas of 1952, with the blue top pink labels. Then the all pink label 78's were issued for Christmas, 1954, along with a picture sleeve, very much like the 45. The image of the sleeve here was sold with a pink 78 in 2020.

rhythmdog 22nd Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMWillie Mae Thornton - Walking Blues / Rock A Bye Baby (1955) | This seems fairly rare. Only two sales of the 78 and none of the 45 (known to exist) were documented at popsike.
rhythmdog 22nd Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMWillie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton - Hound Dog / Rock A Bye Baby (1956) | This pairing is a whole lot rarer on 78 than the original pairing with "Night Mare" as the flip. I must have looked at at least 100, maybe 150 sales of "Hound Dog" on 78, and found exactly one which had "Rock A Bye Baby" on the flip. Although there was no image of that side, based on the seller's description it is clear that each side must have used their original labels, as the listing called the record number 1647. The image of the "Hound Dog" side doesn't show any differences from one version of the 1953 labels.
rhythmdog 22nd Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMWillie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton - Hound Dog / Rock A Bye Baby (1956) | This pairing didn't occur until 1955 at the earliest (which is when "Rock A Bye Baby" was first released on Peacock 1647), and more likely than not came about because of Elvis' hit, so 1956 is the most likely date.

rhythmdog 21st Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMJohnny Woodson And The Crescendos - Dreamer From My Heart / All That's Good (1957) | This group went on to become The Kuf-Linx who recorded the cover song "So Tough".
rhythmdog 20th Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Shirelles - Tonight's The Night / Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow Boys | Are both songs actually present on the disc? Of course on the 45, they are the two sides of Scepter 1211. However, only "Boys" is Scepter "1211B" as shown on this side of the 78 and the sellers do not specify that both songs are present.
rhythmdog 9th Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMJumpin' George - Bucket Blues / Go Bounce | This 78 on offer from 50s expert Galen Gart, who says it's San Francisco DJ "Jumpin' " George Oxford, and dates from ca. 1953. Label not listed in "The R&B Indies".
rhythmdog 9th Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Four Sharps [Ajax] - Santa Claus Shuffle / Christmas Blues (1954) | The sides are marked as "103" and "103-A", which here becomes the B side.
rhythmdog 26th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMArtells Dickson - I'm Going To Marry 'Arry / Dere'll Be No Distinction Dere | It was said at Discogs that this artist was active in Ohio and Indiana in the 1920's and that one feature of his act was to impersonate Harry Lauder.
rhythmdog 4th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMThe Balladiers - Forget Me Not / What Will I Tell My Heart (1953) | I wonder if "Joel Turner" might actually be Joel Turnero? At the time of this release, Joel Turnero was in New York, and The Balladiers are known to have been a New York group. Apparently both of their Aladdin sides were actually recorded in 1947. That might be too early for Joel Turnero - or not.
The Promo copies of this record seem more prevalent than the stock copies. "Prevalent" in this context meaning the difference between a few copies and almost none.
Finally, Aladdin 3122 and 3124 came out in February of 1952, so apparently either the label held this back more than a year or, a year after its release they sent copies for review. I lean towards the second possibility, because there is only one "known" copy of the 45 of this record, which would be less likely to be the case had it been released in 1953.
