scrough 23rd Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMArturo Toscanini And The N.B.C. Symphony Orchestra - Symphony Nr. 3 In E FLat Major, Op. 55 (Eroica) (1942) | The 'S' in DBS indicates this is a single sided record in the DB series.

scrough 19th Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMHandy's Orchestra - A Bunch Of Blues / Moonlight Blues (1917) | xiphophilos - all images now edited, so back to you. han - please don't make a habit of this ;)
scrough 18th Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMDame Nellie Melba - Chanson Triste / By The Waters Of Minnetonka (1924) | Confession: My 1924 HMV annual catalogue says at the beginning 'issues up to 31 Dec 1923' but contains many DA/DB numbers! I've since found out that this catalogue was a later issue, and the final 'Celebrity' section lists new double sided Celebrity issues up to 31 March 1924 which it declares on the last page.
Many links to the British Library in the comments here no longer work and all their sounds documents have been scrapped. Must be run by the Tories!

scrough 8th Apr 2024 | | 78 RPMRoyal Philharmonic Orchestra - "Orpheus" (1948) | Issued with DB 6644 - "Orpheus" - Symphonic Poem Parts 1 & 2.
scrough 22nd Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMWilhelm Furtwängler Mit Der Berliner Philharmoniker - 5. Sinfonie In C Moll, Op. 67 (Beethoven) (1938) | But this set was issued as Album 294 by HMV in Dec 1937.
scrough 21st Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMWilhelm Furtwängler Mit Der Berliner Philharmoniker - 5. Sinfonie In C Moll, Op. 67 (Beethoven) (1938) | Bit of a mystery here - did Electrola issue its own albums? HMV Album 196 was "Twenty Four Preludes Op 28" by Chopin played by Cortot.
scrough 20th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMWilhelm Furtwängler Mit Der Berliner Philharmoniker - Sinfonie Nr. 5 In C Moll, Op 6 (1938) | As they are in the HMV DB series they should be 12 inch.
scrough 18th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMRegensburger Domchor (Domspatzen) - Mariae Wiegenlied (Maria sitzt am Rosenhag) / Wiegenlied (Schlafe mein Prinzchen) (1939) | With the occupation of Denmark and Norway in May 1940, these countries no longer could have their records pressed at Hayes. Instead, they were pressed by The Carl Lindström firm in Berlin. Sweden also had difficulties keeping contact with the mother firm, so Swedish issues were pressed locally. See Concert Record Grammophone biog

scrough 12th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMMaurice Chevalier - Louise / Valentine (1953) | Xiph - Traders were supplied with monthly stick-in sheets of new issues to update their catalogues as noted in that catalogue.See 4th image (1398186) which shows some of these, including one from Sept 1952.
scrough 12th Mar 2024 | | 78 RPMMaurice Chevalier - Louise / Valentine (1953) | Han: Is there a source for these dates?
In 1951 HMV UK published a trade catalogue containing many dates for JO and other International series - see here. Dates from these pages have been used where available e.g. JO-276/298.
scrough 27th Feb 2024 | | 78 RPMBoston Promenade Orchestra - Ballet Egyptien (1951) | March 1951 is the HMV official release date from dealers catalogues..
There are only a few B series auto-coupled issues, and this was the first to be issued as auto-coupled only. All subsequent issues were also auto-coupled only
The first auto-coupled B was 7000-7005 (standard coupling B3799-3804) released in August 1933. The last was 7035-7036 in May 1953.
scrough 23rd Jan 2024 | | 78 RPMJohn W. Morton - John Morton Goes To Church (1900) | From Kelly database the matrix is 1313a and it was released in UK as 1123. The British version title was "A visit to Church", and performer John Morton. See https://www.gramophonecompanydiscography.com/search?query=John%20Morton

scrough 19th Jan 2024 | | 78 RPMWilliam Lind - Künstlerleben / Wien, Du Stadt Meiner Träume (1947) | >Suddenly you realise its pointless providing links to sites that probably won't be there in a few years
Yes Keith, but a link gives us a clue on where to look on the 'way back' machine at archive.org if it has been saved there.
scrough 28th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMElmer Bernstein - Staccato's Theme / The Jazz At Waldo's (1959) | Paul Pelletier's "Capitol Singles Catalogue" claims this wasn't released as a 78rpm.
scrough 26th Aug 2023 | | 78 RPMAldershot County High School - Dido And Aeneas / Dido And Aeneas | This record is clearly marked as 33.3 rpm. Why is it in 78rpm world?
scrough 8th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMSergei Rachmaninoff And The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra - Concerto No.2 In C Minor, Op. 18 (No. 1/10) (1933) | And to be a little more precise on issue date, the HMV 1933 catalogue (to end of Dec 1932) lists the flip-coupled set, the HMV 1934 catalogue (to end of Dec 1933) lists the drop-coupled set. But quite how we can enter this, apart from a comment like this, needs a lot of thought :(
scrough 7th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMSergei Rachmaninoff And The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra - Concerto No.2 In C Minor, Op. 18 (No. 1/10) (1933) | This was released as part of Album No 84. To clarify the two auto-coupled sets - the flip coupled set was DB 7008-7012, and the drop coupled set was DB 7427-7431.
scrough 7th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMSergei Rachmaninoff And The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra - Concerto No.2 In C Minor, Op. 18 (No. 1/10) (1933) | I probably haven't explained very well, but the DB 1333-7 set would be played in numerical order, A side then B side, and the titles given have confused you - DB 1336 is the 4th part of the 2nd movement and then the 1st part of the 3rd movement, DB 1337 is the 2nd and 3rd part of the 3rd movement. The term flip-coupled was my own invention, so there may be a more widely used term. To be auto-coupled in any form, the cat number would be above 7000 as in this entry,

scrough 7th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMSergei Rachmaninoff And The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra - Concerto No.2 In C Minor, Op. 18 (No. 1/10) (1933) | @Xiph -
Please see this post on auto-couplings for details of dates.
scrough 5th Jun 2023 | | 78 RPMSpencer Shaw - Russian Patrol / The Storm (1926) | I suspect the Frank Andrews issue date of 1927 is a typo. This entry is followed by:
"The October 1926 issues show that the quadrants had been dispensed with in the lower half of the labels."
The earlier labels here show these quadrants. Andrews also notes that 'Zonophone Record' became 'Zonophone' in December 1926.
scrough 24th May 2023 | | 78 RPMTheodore Chaliapine - Song Of The Flea / La Calunnia È Un Venticello (Slander Is A Whispering Zephyr) (1926) | Looks like Chaliapin recorded this twice, once for HMV and once for Victor, and presumably collected the fees twice :). So I've unlinked the two recordings, and updated this one.
scrough 24th May 2023 | | 78 RPMTheodore Chaliapine - Song Of The Flea / La Calunnia È Un Venticello (Slander Is A Whispering Zephyr) (1926) | @Xiph - According to the Kelly database both sides were recorded in London in 1926:

Perhaps the DAHR recording notes were added in error?

scrough 16th Mar 2023 | | 78 RPMDanish State Radio Symphony Orchestra Conducted By Nicolai Marko - Caprice Italien (Italian Caprice) Op 45 (1951) | Don't blame me Mike - it was submitted as the main image for this entry!!
scrough 13th Mar 2023 | | 78 RPMChicago Symphony Orchestra - Largo (1928) | Black labels were replaced by red in the D series in 1932. Please upload your labels.
scrough 11th Mar 2023 | | 78 RPMThe Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra - The Dream Of Gerontius (Op.38) Prelude (1945) | This was part of Album number 386 (albums were called Record Libraries after World War 2). C.7611 -7622 was the auto-coupled version. The full list of performers on this set were Heddle Nash (tenor), Dennis Noble (baritone), Gladys Ripley (mezzo soprano), and Norman Walker (bass),along with the Huddersfield Choral Society and the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. June 1945 is the release date provided by HMV trade catalogues.

scrough 2nd Mar 2023 | | 78 RPMMuriel Brunskill - Softly Awakes My Heart / Homing (1923) | 3328R is an electrical re-recording made on 15 October 1926. Please enter your record as an new item with a release date of 1926.
scrough 19th Feb 2023 | | 78 RPMWilliam Starr - Set Of Jigs: Intro / Kenmuirs On An Awa' / Peter Baillie's Wife / Teviot Bridge / Set Of Irish Hornpipes: Intro / The Wonder / The Trumpet Hornpipe / The Locomotive Hornpipe (1951) | I've got F-3409 to F-3423 as released in 1951. F-3417 was released in September 1951, and F-3426 in Feb 1952 according to this Trade Catalogue. This series never had monthly releases, only a few bulk releases every year.
scrough 12th Feb 2023 | | 78 RPMDame Nellie Melba - Chanson Triste / By The Waters Of Minnetonka (1924) | It also seems that these records were never released in catalogue number order. The June 1925
list shows DB-835 and DB-109 on page 2, and DB-109 (Gigli) is not in the March 1924 list, only records above DA/DB 200 :(
scrough 12th Feb 2023 | | 78 RPMDame Nellie Melba - Chanson Triste / By The Waters Of Minnetonka (1924) | The label bio was written 10 years ago and is now well out-of-date, and I've recently PM'd xiph to say it needed updating. 1924 is given as the beginning of the DA and DB series in many places, and I suspect that many were bulk issued without announcement.
scrough 22nd Jan 2023 | | 78 RPMVarious Artists - Aida. No. 31 & 32 (1924) | I've had a similar problem trying to make a table of HMV albums with cat numbers for both straight and auto-couplings. Best I could do was to list them as "Soloists, Orchestra Name, Conductor Name" where known, which for this album would have been "Soloists, Grand Milan Orchestra" which gave a little more context to the record.
