Biography - Parlophone    UK

Parlophone UK Series Details

The early history of Parlophon(e) is very confused, with lots of information on the internet that disagrees. However, we can determine that it was part of Carl Lindström Gmbh, a German public limited company, which also owned the Odeon label and quite a few others. It was originally named "Parlophon". From around 1904 onwards, Lindström expanded its operations onto many continents including Africa, India, and South America, and made many recordings of the native music of the countries where operations were established. Odeon produced the first double sided records in 1904.

Most important perhaps is Lindström's establishment of the Okeh record label in the USA. Otto Heinemann was manager of the US branch of Odeon, and established the Okeh label in 1916. The first records were released in 1918. But in 1920, recordings by African-American blues singer Mamie Smith were a surprise hit for Okeh, and the label followed up by releasing many "Race" records.

In August 1923, the British branch of Parlophon (but with an "e" added) was established. Parlophone was able to use many recordings from other labels in the Lindström group, and quickly became a major British label.

Lindström was acquired by English Columbia in 1926. As English Columbia then owned US Columbia, it had many rights to the new electrical recording systems, whereas Lindström did not.

By 1930, British Parlophone were issuing a wide range of recordings, including the successfull 'Rhythm Style" series of Jazz and Blues recordings sourced from Okeh.

Parlophone 78rpms continued to be released into the late 1950s; for a period, both 78rpm and 45rpm disks were available for all new releases in the R series. By 1960 the 45rpm only releases became dominant, and the last 78rpm was released in January 1960.

There are quite a few different series of Parlophone 78s, and some records were issued twice, in different series with different numbers.

MAJOR SERIES

X/E/R 3000 10" Series

This series was issued between October 1923 and September 1936. Its contents were nominally 'British', but Hawaiian, Hebrew and Yiddish, and other oddments appear. Acoustic recordings appear up to about 3250, with later numbers being electrically recorded, but with a few exceptions. The X label was green, the E label red or blue, and the R label purple. The final issue was E 4113. The R prefix was only used on some numbers from 3200, and should not be confused with the R100 series (see later) which issued numbers in this range in the late 1940s. The 3000 series R recordings can usually be distinguished from the R100 series records by looking at the Parlophone symbol. The 3000 series will have a horn gramophone as part of the symbol.

E 5000 10" Series

This series was issued between October 1923 and July 1931, numbering between 5000 and 6428. Its contents were popular, classical, dance and entertainment.

In May 1932, the Second New Rhythm Style Series introduced a new label design with the Parlophone name on a golden background. This design was also used on the later Super Rhythm Style Series and on the Jazz Classics Series until February 1942. Then the golden background was replaced with a blue one. From mid-1947, the R-prefix was followed by a period. From Jan. 1949, the label is surrounded by a longer patent text that takes up 2/3 of the margin.

F 100 Series
This series commenced in February 1935. It contained popular and entertainment material. It was abandoned in 1955.
