I was interested in seeing same, insofar as how they were stamped and whether the locked groove was concentric or 0.125" eccentric. But I read that runout into on another site. ;-) In any case, though, much appreciated.

It looks like the trim for these labels was 3.015625", given Columbia's knowledge of the shrinkage of center labels when pressed onto vinyl in what was termed "Compression" for such labels.

W.B.lbl stamped in the deadwax are:
For Beehive, L—6442-1A
For Rain, L—6437-1A
In addition, on both sides opposite that stamped info is a very faint stamped B 3

Nice label images, Kevin Walsh1, that should be moved up after editing, and an interesting addditional article about this "mock-future antiquity".

Wondering what the matrix numbers on the deadwax would look like . . . was it a Columbia New York lacquer-cutting job, or done elsewhere?

To the best of my limited ability, I’ve added clean and sharper-focussed label images.

They did get the joke (correct release date is May 1968 though, not March 1969, see BB article):

Promotional and special issue 78s have been produced since the 1950s. Among them you'll find:
...
Randy Newman -- The Beehive State/ I Think It's Going to Rain Today -- Reprise 0284 -- March 1969 - USA
Issued as a part of the Reprise Speed Series. I do not know if there were any further releases in this series, but the tongue in cheek tone of the press release that accompanied it may indicate that it was a one off gimmick for this release. It does, however, sound as good as the press release would like you to believe!

Not everybody got the joke though. From Wikipedia:

Reprise also issued this single on a promotional 10" vinyl 78 rpm record as the first (and only) release under their proposed "Reprise Speed Series" of 78 RPM releases (the series was discontinued by Reprise due to a lack of interest and sales a few months after this release). [emphasis mine]

See also the short Billboard article from Nov 23, 1968 added by me, "Reprise KO's 78's".

Do I have to point out that the "very short-lived 78 RPM Speed Series" of Reprise Records was nothing but a mock venture? If you read the accompanying news release, you can't help grinning:

In announcing this week the birth of its revolutionary 78 RPM SPEED SERIES, Reprise Records heralded the phonograph breakthrough as "the dawn of a new era in sound quality and production excellence." ... "We rank this breakthrough along with the development of the long-playing record album, stereophonic sound ..." ... "In technical terms, the faster a record goes, the better it sounds. ..." Reprise Records is urging other record companies to "join hands in this bold step into the future".
