The spirited instrumental version of "Spanish Two Step" was recorded by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys in September 1935. Wills had it reportedly written already in 1927 when he was working in a barbershop in New Mexico, after a Mexican showed him how to play the fiddle that way. This tune was the model for the very similar "San Antonio Rose", which later with added lyrics as "New San Antonio Rose" became the band's first big hit. Wills repeated the formula for success with the vocal "New Spanish Two Step", with words by singer Tommy Duncan, which topped the C&W (Folk) charts for 16 weeks in 1946.
