DeweyGill SUBS 29th Jul 2024		Also Vocalion 05809 When The Stevens Hotel opened in 1927, it was considered the World’s largest hotel. Described as a city within a city, it sported a large movie theatre, a ballroom, a 27 chair barber shop, a bowling alley, a pharmacy, a candy store and many other amenities. Despite being a big attraction, it struggled to turn a profit, the depression magnifying its woes. The insurance company magnates the Stevens family tried some unethical practices to keep it afloat, but the city seized the hotel shortly after these sessions, selling it to the US Army. During WW2, it served as housing for military recruits. Conrad Hilton purchased the property in 1945, refurbished it, and it still stands in Chicago as one of that city’s fine historic hotels, still under the Hilton banner
