 Thanks , makes sense with the BBC radio / TV features on the birth of the LP, which mentioned vynlyite (Union Carbide Trade Mark ) http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/629579/Vinylite

Britannica tells us this was in 1930, I guess that RCA's use of this was determined by cost , Shellac was cheap (?) , comparatively, at least until US entered WW2 and the import of the raw materials for Shellac was restricted accross the Pacific ( so how come in UK enough Shellac remained for domestic usage - or did the high taxes mean actual disc sales in UK were relatively low ?

 Here's a bit more on plastics: http://tenwatts.blogspot.com/2012/10/plastic-precursors.html

FYI: Solid shellac is more fragile than glass by any heuristic measure.

Metrolite, deccalite etc were vinyl. Polystyrene existed in that era but wasn't durable enough for the heavy tone arms of that era. They are more rigid because they used less plasticizers in the formula. The formulas wasn't particularly proprietary since none of them invented any plastics- ever. however, the brand names metrolite et al were trade marked.

Vinyl 78s debuted in the last 1940s originally for radio servicing because the audio was superior, but as electric record players became more popular, particularly because of lighter tracking, they began marketing vinyl (PVC) 78s.

This makes sense because vinyl was already in use before the debut of 45s and LPs. The new technology there was finding ways to press grooves closer together.

 I think that's just a kind of "ad copy" - Metrolite was a proprietary formula that may have been a bit less prone to breakage than shellac, but it was still as breakable as any other records. It wasn't vinyl. Shellac was also non-breakable under normal use... it's why our 78s are still intact after up to a hundred years or more!

 "Non-Breakable" => vinyl?
