One reason why neither Johnny Otis nor Mel Walker were named en clair on this record may be that they still had a contract with Savoy. In the same Billboard issue in which Little Esther's record was first mentioned, there was also a Savoy ad for "Sunset To Dawn" / "Feel Like Cryin' Again" (Savoy 821) by Mel Walker with J. Otis Orch. "Sunset To Dawn" would become Mel Walker's second and last top ten hit (#10 in Jan 1952).

Flipped sides because "The Crying Blues" was actually the "AA" side which meant the top side on Federal and King records. Whereas the backing J. And O. Orchestra (on both sides) is definitely Johnny Otis' band (see also the composer credits for "The Crying Blues"), I haven't found a clear confirmation that Mel is Mel Walker. Anyway I have no doubts that he is the man, although English Wikipedia, probably by mistake, lists Federal 12055 - "Ring-a-Ding-Doo" (with Bobby Nunn) / "The Cryin' Blues". Bobby Nunn would become Esther's evident vocal partner on later Federal releases (12100, 12122).

Side A is a hot rhythm number. Is the Mel involved Mel Walker? He deserves better mention.

The band on side B goes by the name the J. and O. band. There is an uncredited male who does crying effects behind Little Esther's vocal and who also says a few words at the very end of the track. Possibily this is also Mel?
