This must have confused listeners to no end! They buy a single labelled the Comets, likely expecting to hear a new rock and roll smash like The Saints Rock and Roll and instead they get a couple of lively C&W numbers instead. Ironically, Haley DID record his first known bona fide rock and roll song at Atlantic - a cover of Ruth Brown's Teardrops from My Eyes (the original also being on Atlantic), predating his version of Rocket 88 by a year - but for reasons unknown it was rejected for release in 1950 and never saw the light of day until Bear Family included it in a box set in 2006. It still had a country sound, but it would have been more on-brand for Haley at the time.
This is what I love about this stuff - these tracks were originally released in the USA in 1950 on Atlantic of all labels, as by Bill Haley & His Saddlemen. Now surely this is the only release on Melodisc sourced from Atlantic? Melodisc to me is one of those magic Brit labels that seemed to operate totally outside the square.
