Phillips’ instrument has been debated for decades but the most recent opinion is that it was a Celestophone and/or a Phonoharp made by the Phonoharp Company in the 1910’s, based on the famous photo of his holding the 2 instruments.

historyofcountrymusic 6th Jan 2021		Ah the mystery grows! Apparently the Columbia producer Frank Walker once said years later in an interview that it took Phillips about 20-30 minutes to ‘assemble’ the instrument before the recordings took place.
Mike Gann 6th Jan 2021		I knew a man, who told me that when he was a child that he knew Washington Phillips. He told me that half of his instrument was fashioned from the rear door of a Model T Ford. He didn't know about the other half.
