You're completely correct 'xiphophilos,' I misread the advertisement confusing it as if there were two recordings by the same artist being shown. My apologies.

Annette Hashaw did record "The Man I Love" for Pathé / Perfect, but several months earlier, in January 1928, and with a different matrix number, 108018 (source). Released as Perfect 12411, this song was also coupled with a different song than on the Velvet Tone and Harmony labels, featuring "When Your're with Somebody Else" (mx 108019) on the flip side.

Simply the fact that Annette Hanshaw covered _one_ of these two songs in that same year is, I think, not sufficient evidence that she's identical with Virginia Lee.

In fact, the vendor you quote never claims that Virginia Lee is a pseudonym for Hanshaw. On the contrary, he writes, "Madeleine Beatty as Virginia Lee on Velvet Tone 1633-V."

According to a vendor on: http://www.rootsvinylguide.com/ebay_items/78-annette-hanshaw-as-gay-ellis-plus-virginia-lee Virginia Lee is a pseudonym for Annette Hanshaw, that also had a recording with the same title "The Man I Love" released under the Perfect Label (Catalogue Number 12411) billed as 'Annette Hanshaw and Her Sizzlin' Syncopaters (1928).'

This Virginia Lee is a pseudonym for Madeleine Beatty (source), but that's the extent that seems known about her.

The South African Virginia Lee was born circa 1927 I believe so this is not her.

Can this "Virginia Lee", really be Vaughn DeLeath singing under the name Virginia Lee ?
