 Thanks, Steve, for your attempt to explain the Down Beat / Swing Beat / Swing Time story. Actually it seems to be much more complicated as you suggest. I have e.g. labels of Swing Beat 121 (Lowell Fulson) and 191 (Maxwell Davis), and Swing Time 135 (Tulsa Red) and 168 (Pete Johnson). Definitely not all of these were reissues of earlier Down Beat records.

 The highest number Down Beat label in my database is 204. All the Swing Beat labels I have are in the 212-221 range. It doesn't look as though they were Swing Beat long enough to generate any overlap between that label and Down Beat, which is to say they concentrated on new issues for that stretch. They were Swing Time long enough, however, to generate new-labelled versions of discs as far back as 196. I don't know if that helps understand Down Beat and its successors or not, but there you have it.

 Down Beat records are difficult because no exact recording dates were logged and records were not necessarily numbered chronologically. Still I follow the 1948 suggestion for now because Down Beat #159 and #165 were advertised in Billboard of Oct 30, 1948. Anyway this one was not released after 1949 because Down Beat was rechristened Swing Beat around Oct 1949 (six months later, the name was changed again to Swing Time).
