| Excello-2101 SUBS 2nd May 2014 | Morey Amsterdam, who is credited with writing the hit, "Rum And Coca-Cola" is best known for his role as Buddy Sorrell on the American television series "The Dick Van Dyke Show", which ran from 1961 to 1966. Even though he is still given credit for writing the song, there was a version of this song originally written by a calypso singer from Trinidad named Lord Invader (Rupert Grant). After a 3 year copyright battle, Lord Invader was granted royalties, but Amsterdam was still allowed to receive writer credit for his version. | |
| fixbutte 2nd May 2014 | Rum And Coca-Cola became the most successful of all Andrew Sisters recordings in the USA (second only to Bing Crosby's White Christmas for the 1940 decade) despite the ban of all major radio networks. In the USA, it was banned because of the "Rum" (prohibition) as well as the "Coca-Cola" (advertising) part of the title, and because of the story of the song about GIs in Trinidad and their interaction with local women "working for the Yankee dollar". As said by Harry Nimmo on The Andrews Sisters: A Biography and Career Record (p. 210): "The Andrew Sisters may not have known what the song was about, but the rest of the country did. That's why so many people bought it and why so many others wanted to ban it." At a time in early 1940, CBS allowed instrumental versions, but only announced as "R. and C.C.". | |
