The youtube video offers some interesting background. The song celebrates the end of Prohibition in the USA. In addition, it is associated with Franklin D. Roosevelt's successful campaign for president in 1932. After that, it is said, it became an unofficial song of the Democratic Party. So far this year, though, I haven't heard it once.

By the way, the German version, "Wochenend und Sonnenschein," as sung by the Comedian Harmonists, became an immortal standard in itself. The German lyrics, though, are not just charming, but even a bit suggestive ("Weekend and Sunshine, and then alone with you in a forest - I need nothing else to be happy!").
