The huge success of "Black Night" is all the more striking as it probably was one of the most delicate and elegant recordings ever to top the R&B charts, or any charts. As the title suggests, "Black Night" is a dark song that perfectly caught the mood of the day at the dawn of the Cold War, even with reference to the Korean War. Moreover it has the brilliant vocal and piano of Charles Brown, accompanied by the sensitive guitar of Jesse Ervin, the moaning tenor sax of Maxwell Davis (probably) and the subtle bass of Wesley Prince or David Bryant. There were only few moments in music history when public taste and artistic quality met on such a high level.

"Black Night" may have entered the charts in Feb 1951, but it was already out in Jan 1951, see Aladdin ad in Billboard of Jan 13, 1951, p. 36: "Just Out and a Sure Hit!". It sure was, spending an incredible 14 weeks at the top of the R&B charts.
