 Mike is right, these numbers diagonally across from the matrix number in the deadwax are take numbers, not side indicators.

With Columbia records, it is always difficult to tell which side is the A side. When the matrix numbers are close together, the side with the lower matrix number is often the A side (as here). The only way to tell for sure is when you look at adds in which the record company promotes this record. In this case, there is also the Billboard review that lists "It Might Have Been A Different Story" first.

 Actually the A side or #1 side is "It might have been a different story". The label isn't marked but the record is stamped 1 and 2.
